Dakar Rally 2010 : Some images

The 31st running of the Dakar Rally is being held in South America for the second year, instead of the traditional African route, due to ongoing security concerns. This year's race began and will end in Buenos Aires, covering a looping 9,000 kilometers between Argentina and Chile over 14 stages. 362 Teams began the race with 176 motorcycles and quad bikes, 134 cars, and 52 trucks. The race is just over halfway completed now, the winners expected to cross the finish line on January 16th. Collected here are several photographs from the first 8 stages of this year's rally

Superb pics, its sad to see the worlds toughest rally Paris-Dakar moving out of Africa due to security issues. But the South American league also seems to be quite tough and challenging.

Recently I saw an excellent top gear episode which covered Bolivian jungles , active volcanoes, Atacama desert , death valley and Pan-American High way. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode.

After seeing that episode I felt that South America also has some really challenging terrains which is not explored by many.

Their Official website has more fantastic photos.
Its VW and BMW leading the show, Mitsubishi following a poor third. What a sudden surge from the Germans, or is it the Spanish drivers that contribute to the VW's performance.
Though few stages left,VW Tourage seems to be clean winner.
I am following this very keen.

Whoa! The pic of vehicle going down the valley is too good to be true! If it is real, hats off to these guys! I dont mean to sound stupid, but would'nt the racers get lost in the wide expansive desert? Or do they have GPS fitted onto their rides?

The valley image is shot from a helicopter and the frame is tilted i guess? otherwise its an awesome feet by the drivers

Yeah thats what I thought when I first saw it. Otherwise it seems to be a 75-80 degree descent! I dont think any machine can have any traction at that high an incline and that too over what seems like a 500-600 foot drop.

Look for the copter towards the top right hand corner, should give an idea of the "tilt".

I have edited my earlier post, something like that and maybe the dust trail will give some idea of where the horizon is?

When i rotate the picture left by 40 deg. trying to get the chopper horizontal, this is what I got. Makes more sense w.r.t the angle of descent as well I guess.
Still an awesome breath-taking descent.
