BMW threaten to quit F1

London (espnstar.com) - BMW are once again sabre rattling and have threatened to quit Formula One and start up a new series - Grand Prix World Championship - with the leading five car manufacturers if the sport does not remain attractive to the company.

Spokesman Burkhard Goeschel was responding to FIA president Max Mosley's proposal for a new set of rules for the 2008 season after the secretive Concorde Agreement come to an end.

"F1 has to change its style of management or BMW and fellow manufacturers are off to the GPWC. It has to be managed like an industrial company. There is room for discussion but a new series might be one solution.

"If F1 is going another way which is not congruent with our ideas and values as BMW then we would change to another kind of motorsport," Goeschel said.

However, not everyone believes the GPWC will carry out their threat. "I don't think there's going to be another championship. There will be one championship, the FIA Formula One world championship," said Minardi boss Paul Stoddart.

GPWC, the company founded by DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Fiat, Renault and BMW to look after their interests, upped the anti last week by pulling out of negotiations with F1 guru Bernie Ecclestone and Slec, the company jointly owned by Ecclestone and several banks, and which owns the rights to the sport.

Goeschel said he hoped the talks could be restarted and that the GPWC would not have to go ahead with their threat to set up a rival championship in 2008. "We didn't see any effort from the shareholders of Slec to realise the task they have," he said. "Now we are waiting."

As the article very clearly states, BMW will quit F1 only in favor of the GPWC...not from the sport altogether. And BMW is not the first to be vocal about this...Ferrari (Fiat), Mercedes, Renault and Ford have also offered support to the new championship. These manufacturers are unhappy about the present and proposed new rules, about the way Formula 1 income is divided and their lack of control over the sports decision making.

think the top 6 teams will act a lil pricey..
dont think they really want to create a new F1 series..

just putting some pressure on bernie to give them a larger piece of the pie..
which they deserve..

Took the words right outta my mouth. Its nothing but a very obvious pressure tactic to get ol man Bernie into their loop

on the other hand, what keeps from the manufacturers from starting their own GP which will have "sporting" people as authority rather than than people who have never been in their car's drivers seat.

with any sport the "governing" people must be from the sport themselves.
