Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

Very Interesting rule just caught my eye!

Article 28.6 f) stages: "For 2011 only, except during the last Event of the Championship season, each driver will be permitted to use a replacement gearbox without incurring a penalty the first time this becomes necessary during the season. Under such circumstances the replacement gearbox will only be required to complete the remainder of the Event in question."

so that means no driver will be penalized in 2011 for a gearbox change. Now this will spice things up and lets see if someone interprets this rule differently to bring any advantage to the performance?

Just re-read that and realized it says "the FIRST time this becomes necessary"

Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

The FIA announced a lot more changes to the rules than the ones that were released initially. Some highlights include :
1. The moveable wings maybe used by the drivers anytime before the race and only for overtaking during the race.

2. The number of wheel tethers used will be doubled from this season and the teams are restricted to use only AZ70 and AZ80 magnesium alloys for the wheels.

3. The weight used in the bodywork flexibility test has been doubled to cut down on the flexi wings. The FIA has also restricted the bodywork dimensions to reduce damage to cars during contacts.

4. The rules have been clarified as to how the driver may defend his position and deliberate crowding of the car beyond the track will be penalised ( Schumacher was already penalised for such a thing this year , although Webber seems to have got away with a similar thing before . So maybe we can expect consistent penalties now for this ).

5. Also the pit lane rules have been improved a bit with the fast lane in the pitlane being restricted to 3.5 metres to prevent incidents like the pitlane racing between Vettel and Lewis ( I think it was in China ) . Also if a driver is waiting at the end of the pitlane, the other driver cannot stop beside his car now. He has to wait behind him.

6. Also, if a dry race is stopped before completion and any driver hasn't used both the dry compounds, 30 seconds will be added to his time. And incase of a completed race where the driver hasn't used both the compounds, he will be excluded from the results.

7. In another significant rule, the mechanics will not be able to work all night on a car on a thursday night or friday night . There is a 6 hour curfew from 12 am to 6 am or 1 am to 7 am depending on the start time of the first practise. The teams get a chance to break this curfew for 4 times in a season in the case of a crash in practise.

Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has rightly rated massa as 7-/10
he really needs to improve.. definately cost the team P2 in the constructors.

Like MS, he will welcome the new Pirellis.

Re: Formula1 - PreSeason Discussion Thread 2011

@ Hatari
I think that is Euro 5 Million . You are right . Williams and Sauber also have a pay driver each . Hispania will auction their seats . Petrov seems to be signed for commercial interests too.

Redbull are making fun of the famous Ferrari team order debacle at Hockenheim this year. If you remember, Rob Smedley told Massa "Alonso is faster than you. Please confirm if you understood this message" as a code to tell him to let Alonso pass. Redbull has a great sense of humour . Remember their gift to Bernie for his 85th birthday? That was awesome too.
