Gosh, that's just terrible news! Caught it on the tube this morning and my heart went out to him. Here's wishing him a speedy recovery.

I believe he got into an accident before the rally actually started.

Kubica's Skoda Fabia went off the road and hit a wall when he was a few kilometers away from the start of the Ronde di Andora Rally. His co-driver, Jakub Gerber, was unhurt.

Kubica underwent seven hours of surgery after the high-speed crash in northern Italy. His right hand was badly damaged and surgeons averted the risk of amputation.

Sad part is Kubica is likely to miss most or all of the 2011 F1 season, which opens with Bahrain Grand Prix on March 13.

re: F1 driver Kubica in hospital after rally crash EDIT - Now recovered & Winning Rallys

Looks like he is able to move his fingers Thats great new considering the amount of injury to his hands. I sincerely hope that he is able to come back to F1 fitness and race in an F1 car at the earliest. Good Luck Kubica. God be with you!

Press Release from Renault:
Robert’s general condition is much better today.

After spending the night under constant observation, he was briefly woken up by the doctors of the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure) this morning. The Lotus Renault GP driver was then able to talk to his relatives. He was also able to move his fingers, which is encouraging for the rest of his recovery process.

A few pics of the car after the accident. He is lucky to be alive . Hope he recovers soon and hopefully will be able to drive in F1 again. But seems like the 2010 season is a writeoff for him.

Holy Lord! The crash pictures looks nasty. The moving finger is great news, but I guess he is going to be out of action for this season. Terrible situation for Renault's hopes in 2011!

Get well soon Kubica!

Its horrifying to see the images of the crashed car. It seems the metal barrier has pierced through the cabin of the Fabia. Lets hope and pray that he recovers quickly and would be able to drive and race like before.

Poor Kubica, he has thrown away a potentially strong season in F1 and along with it, he has completely dashed the hopes of the entire Renault F1 Team. IMO, having interest is one thing, but if an entire team and its resources, hopes and fans are dependant on your performance at the highest level of motorsport, the drivers should have the moral responsibility and should refrain from doing such things.

Eric answered your questions in an interview recently while speaking about Kubica's incident!

Quote:
Boullier also reiterated in an interview with ANSA that Renault backed Kubica's decision to take part in the event, despite its close proximity to the start of the new F1 season.

"Rallying is what Robert loves to do," he said. "We knew the risks and so did he. We didn't want a robot or a corporate man for a driver. It was agreed together."

I read that news already and know that it was mutually agreed. But I just said that the drivers should take it upon themselves and should stop from doing these activities. After all, they belong to the rare breed of humans who get to compete, race and win in the highest level of motorsport on earth. Its not for nothing that Ferrari and the other top teams ban their drivers from doing these things?

The quote was not just about emphasising on something that was being mutually agreed. Its also about a team respecting the interests of their drivers and activities like this helps the drivers to be charged up as well for the season. After all, they are not robots like what Eric says.

BTW, its not Ferrari who treat their drivers like robots or a corporate man! Kimi drove his first rally during the start of 2009 season when he had a contract with Ferrari in 2009. It was again an instance of a team understanding the interests of its drivers and acknowledging the same!

That crash looks B-A-D.

I really really hope that Kubica recovers soon from this massive accident. Very unfortunate that he will miss the 2011 season.

Question is, who replaces him?

Something about this pic is not right. No way a part of the armco can pierce thru a car like that.

It's not fake. That is a real pic. Here is a simulation of how the accident happened. Shows how lucky Kubica really was to survive this accident:

@Newpunter, whoever made that has some wild imagination.

It looks more like a cartoon. Armco is made from ductile alloy and never snap into two like that.

Secondly, if you go to 0.19, the armco pierces the car at the LHS headlight. From then on it magically goes thru the engine and firewall and comes out thru the rear hatchback. LOL
