Official and driver killed in Tom Pryce accident during 1977 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.Formula 1 racing driver Tom Pryce from North Wales died in a tragic and bizarre accident in the South AfricanGrand Prix in 1977.

Two track marshals ran across the road, in an attempt to put out a minor fire on Renzo Zorzi's (Tom Pryces teammate) car. Zorzi had parked his car on the other side of the track. Ironically, Zorzi had alreadyextinguished the fire himself.

One of the marshals was hit by Pryces car which doing speeds of over 300 kmph. The marshal was sliced as he was hit and the 20 pound fire-extinguisher he carried flew into
Pryce's cockpit, hitting him in the face with enough force to launch the extinguisher over the top of the main Grandstand.

You bet!

This is probably the worst accident I have seen in motorsports.

looking at the video it looks as if Tom didn't even attempt to slow down, maybe he couldn't see the marshall or maybe he was looking at his team-mates car. Anyways, it was very very bad. No one should die so badly.

Here is a list of various F1 crashes over the decades. Some are very graphic.

Whoa what was the marshal thinking while crossing the road ????? Thats a bad crash.... Pity that the driver had to die like that.... all due to a stupid/careless marshal...

Watching all those videos we have gotta realise how much racing has evolved, not just better and faster cars, but when it comes to safety.

All the lives lost, including the marshall in that crash who was just getting across to extinguish a flame which could have ended up becoming a big ball of fire and that too that close to the wall. Though he should have excercised more caution when crossing, did not all go in vain.

Kudos, to all those who learnt from these mistakes to make racing a much more safer and a more family friendly sport.

guess that was rather gruesome. the worst racing accident was the 55 Le Mans http://members.aol.com/healeypics/lemans.html
rather tragic here as well, the car exploded and killed people in the stands.
guess motor sports is dangerous for spectators and participants alike.
