Is it too early to love cars?

Hello fellow BHPians, moderators, and guest readers. Let me introduce myself (this will be a fairly lengthy one):

I am Shyam, a 15-year old Class X student. I am an avid car enthusiast. Mind you, I haven't driven cars, I only admire them, and that too since years I do not remember. Imagine when I start driving! I can confidently say that I would get my DL on my 18th birthday. I have other interests too: cricket, finance, geo-politics, history and tech (to a very small extent). I aspire to either be an MBA from an Ivy League (The journey to get there is a story for another day, though), or an economist. Being in one of the most critical stages of my life (or rather the educational part of it), I would first apologize that I cannot contribute to the forum as much as other members, but I can assure that when I do contribute, I would make sure that it is well-spent time for my readers.

As much as I love luxury European cars like the Bugattis, Koenigseggs Brabus 800, G90 BMW M5, Lamborghini Revuelto/ Aventador, Aston Martin, etc., I also love some mass-market cars such as the Honda City 1.5 I-Vtec MT, Mahindra Thar Roxx, Mahindra Be6, Mahindra XUV700, Maruti Suzuki Swift with Z series engine, Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra Scorpio-N, Hyundai N-Lines. I am more of a car-fan than a bike-luster.

A bit of my background: My mother, A.Vigneshwari is a homemaker-turned businesswomen, while my father, Suresh Sabesan, is a banker. In our car collection, there is a 2018 Maruti Suzuki Dzire, a 2019 Maruti Suzuki XL6 (both gasoline), an e-cycle (eMotorad X1), and an Ather 450 (which was just sold yesterday). I do not have much exposure to cars, but hopefully my college life proves otherwise. I have an elder college-going sister, whom, ironically, hates cars. I do not stand out in crowd in any way, except for the way I think. I simply think differently than most people around me, and most people I know, but I will never get into a heated argument for it.

I have been reading this forum as a guest since days of the launch/unveil of the third generation Dzire (in 2017!). Joining this forum is one of twelve of my new year resolutions for 2025.

Now time to credit people whom I believe I should credit for my privilege to be able to communicate to thousands of fellow car enthusiast (most of whom are senior to me) or have indirectly encouraged me to join this forum.

1) My Parents: They have given me a lot of freedom. If I can write this post, it would have been without them. Not just here on the forum, but anywhere. The other day I felt a little shy to check out some brand new display car, yet they encouraged me to look around it.

2) @GTO, and in general, the moderators: First of all, to maintain such a clean forum, free of any low-quality content and abusive language (in a topic as controversial as cars) is a work on its own. Then secondly, to write a lot of well-composed, informative, and unbiased posts. Then, to avoid any content related to breaking traffic rules on an enthusiast' car forum is another on its own

3) Every single member who wrote an ownership review, and every singly Team-BHP preview and official review. It redefined what I know of car ownership, maintanence, modification, and DIY.

4) @CenterOfGravity: I initially felt a little out of place to join a car forum without ever being behind the wheels till I read his posts. Although now he has a DL, I believe he still doesn't drive that often, and admires cars more than he drives them (No offence to you, you may even get this post deleted at your favour).

Hello Shyam! What a way to make an entry.

Really cool MSIL garage you got there!! You're in the right place for everything automotive! We would love for you to pen down your ownership reviews!!

Shit, where are my manners! I'm nova, 18 based in BLR, holding onto my LL waiting to get my DL. Yet to get that finesse on a car, but I've mastered riding to an intermediate level, if i do say so myself!

Our current garage includes a 2004 Hyundai Elantra GT. Pretty old but surprisingly very reliable and very fun to drive!!

Don't worry, it's never too early to love cars! I used to change my PC's wallpaper everyday ever since I was a kid! I had a whole folder full of car wallpapers, think it had about 450-500.

CentreOfGravity is one of the best guys out there, writing some great stuff! shoutout COG, you're doing a great job inspiring the young ones coming on here!!

See you around!!

Hello there, Shyam. A hearty welcome to Team-BHP!

It's nice to hear that you have several varied interests apart from cars, and you also seem to have a vision of what you want to do in life . Most people your age may not be clear about their long-term goals, and while that's completely alright, having a broad outline just gives you better clarity of thought. I also appreciate that you have original/different thoughts; this is always better than the herd mentality!

Also, that's an interesting choice of username. How did you arrive at it?

Wow, that's quite a list! A very diverse list of body styles, including sedans, hatches, SUVs and sports cars and supercars, I see. Do you have a preference for a specific body style?

I'm genuinely incredibly honoured to hear this, man! I'm glad that I was of some use and my posts encouraged you to join the forum. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would make a difference
You are right, I do have a driving license but I don't drive as frequently I would have liked to due to some reasons. However, that's going to change soon and I will drive a lot more this year. And don't worry, no offense taken XD.

Welcome, Shyam! There’s no minimum age to be an enthusiast, it's the passion that truly matters.

No need to apologize, no one in this world is born with knowledge. It's something we acquire.

I can't stop myself from asking! Why isn't Ferrari on the list?

Re: Is it too early to love cars?

welcome to the forum Shyam. No age is too early for loving cars. My tryst happened with this game where we used to count the red and green cars (somewhere around late 1990s) and I have been a fanboy ever since. A render of something similar today might be impossible consider that the number of shades and the sheer complexity of what is a red and green has increased manifold.

Enjoy your time on the forum and work towards the career plan you have figured out. Also stay open to pivot if required.

I, for some reason, do not like the way the company treats it customers (i.e, having to be an absolute fan, buying two cheaper card before buying one flagship, sueing customers for cars that are not like how they want it to be)

It is the customer's choice. Bad attitude towards customer makes me forget the product, however good it is. That is the same reason why a Tata will never be in my favourite car list.

At a much younger age, I used to dream of a car that was as fast as an express train, hence

Ferrari isn’t just selling cars, they are selling a legacy, an experience that’s deeply tied to motorsport history, craftsmanship and exclusivity. The idea of building a relationship with the brand by owning entry-level models before getting access to the flagships isn’t about gatekeeping as much as it is about preserving that exclusivity and loyalty. They want to ensure that their most special models go to people who truly value what the brand represents, not just those with deep pockets, which most there customers do have

As for the lawsuits and control over modifications, I think it's about protecting the brand’s image and heritage. With so much of Ferrari’s identity tied to prestige and design, I can understand their desire to maintain a certain standard. It’s not for everyone, sure, but for those who live and breathe Ferrari, that level of control actually enhances the mystique.

At the end of the day, it’s not just a car brand, it’s a philosophy. Not everyone will agree with it, but that’s what makes Ferrari... Ferrari.
