Welcome to the forum. I'm a martial art practitioner as well, now relocated to Hyderabad, India. Taking a break from it due to lack of a dojo and partners. I have been practicing kendo since 2001 and am a ni-dan(this was the year I would have tested for san-dan if I had been in NY :( ).
In reply to an earlier poster, actually it's spelled as sempai in english and pronounced similarly. And a sempai has kohai/s to impart his wisdom/learnings to.
