Greetings from Hyderabad

Hi all,

Have been a follower of teambhp for a long while and had never managed to register and get myself on board. Finally, a few days off from a normal hectic worklife gave me the time and the inclination to get here.

As my handle suggests, the one car that will always get me smiling is the Ambassador. My grandmother bought one 52 years ago and that is still my daily drive (albeit with some engine and interior changes). Have always had a love for automobiles from a really early age and through the years we've had cars come and go - the Amby was constant but we also gone through a Standard 10, a Maruti 800 that served us for many years, an Esteem, a Bolero (all came and went) and now have a Santro Xing in the garage as well that my folks use. I still drive the Amby everyday and the only car that I consciously will accept being a daily drive is possibly a new Amby that will come out in August this year.

I work in the event industry and that has given me the opportunity to launch a few cars over the last few years, have worked with Hyundai, Toyota, Royal Enfield, Eicher and recently in the last coupe of years, Audi.

I currently also own a 1969 Willys that is in the process of being customized, can't say restored because it already has an Isuzu 1.8 under the hood and hope to have it ready soon.

Look forward to touching base with like-minded people here, swapping stories, tips, experiences and hopefully, some drives!

Happy motoring, people

Re: Greetings from Hyderabad

@ Octane : Thanks. It is a great drive

@ Fazal : Just what I'm here for. Love your jeep. And the classic bikes.

@ Acclero : Will post pics on the customization on the Amby one of these days. The jeep will take some time though, right now a family crisis and crazy work seem to take up all my time (and money), but soon.

Re: Greetings from Hyderabad

Right, am a newbie at this so hope I get it right....

Some of you have asked for some pics of the Amby, here you go. These were done by a 'studying-to-be-professional' photographer who squeezed himself into the boot of another car and took these really great pics.

Re: Greetings from Hyderabad

Welcome aboard friend, as you have rightly put it, Amby was the first car to fascinate me too, back in 1984, when I took our company's Mark-IV that was brand new, on the port road of Tuticorin, at around 90 kmph, the feeling I went experienced was absolutely out of the world, like the First Kiss, the most passionate moment was that.
Safe Driving mate.

Hey Farooq,

What can I say? The car has been with us as far as I can remember. My grandmother bought it in 1960 I think and she was a rare sight in those days, according to my mother. My gran was about 5 feet tall, had cushions on the seat so she could see over the bonnet and lived back in those days on a farm near Medchal. Gutsy old bird! Apparently, she was famous a the village closeby, Gundala Pochampally, all you had to go was ask anyone where the lady with the Amby lived and you would have been directed to her door.

The car as you would expect has tons of history when concerned with our family. She was there when my parents got married, they drove away from their wedding in 3402. 30 odd years later I drove away from my wedding in the same car! I have two younger brothers and all of us were brought home from the maternity hospital in 3402 and I daresay, when we have our own children, she'll still be around to bring them home.

Growing up, I was always the coolest because I learnt to drive in an Amby. Other kids would 'try' showoff in their ubercool Daddy's Fiats and Standards but nothing came close to the Amby. Guess size did matter, even then. As I said, I learnt to drive in her, she was the first car I 'stole' when Mum and Dad were out and went joyriding around the countryside, when I got older and started dating, she was then parked in the garage coz the engine had given up and I always wished she worked. I think it was 12 years ago that she was towed away, had her old junked engine removed and interiors changed and I started driving her then.

She was originally white but then later on, had her painted black, had the Trekker engine removed and changed it with an Isuzu 1.8, stuck an AC in, seats came from a Cielo but I still retained the old meters and the old clock!

I have to drive almost 30 clicks to work (one way) and am thinking now's the time to retire the old girl and use her on the weekend. As an Ambylover, I find it very extremely confusing on what to buy but then all was clear when I read that HM is launching a new Ambassador in August this year and I am going to get one. Will be cool, to have the latest Amby and a 52 year old one, both in the same garage!

The pics have been taken very well and your Amby looks great!!
Needless to say , it's one gem of a ride you have for yourself.
Very beautifully maintained and those tyres add to the beauty of the ride.
