Default Re: The ULTIMAT3- F30 BMW 328i. EDIT: Upgraded with ///M Exhaust, Injen Intake & Steinbauer Power Mo

I had a few months started noticing the occasional stutter / jerk in my 328i, esp during the shift from P > D or while coming to a halt while in D. The same is not the case if I manually downshift to 1 early on, before coming to a complete halt.

After noticing it a few times in a couple of weeks and a Drivetrain error, I decided to have it looked at in the service center in Hyderabad (BMW KUN). The first thing they did was remove the mods (CAI, Race chip and the ER charge pipe) and restored it to stock and ran diagnostics.

Though they couldn't find any errors or observe any jerks / stutter, they did however replace the front passenger side suspension (apparently had a small leak) and the vapour canister (all under warranty tho). The car was at the workshop for nearly 3 weeks and i was regularly updated on the status by the GM himself. I have also been advised not to mod the car to avoid any future issues.

It's been a while since i faced any issues again and my hands are itching to put the mods back in . I really miss the boost. I would like to know if any of you faced a similar issue or any suggestions you have. Also recently I was reading about clutch slipping and was wondering if a faulty transmission had anything to do with this episode.

Cheers!!

The error that triggered it.

It would take a lot to have the ZF trans give issues. Unless its been abused, I doubt the transmission would have any issues.

BTW I read racechip in your post, please change that ASAP. Its a very basic way of increasing power and definitely not good for the engine.

So put your charge pipes back in, put the CAI but get a better box or a good tune for your car and see the difference.

Thanks Akshay, the dealer too was very confident that the trans is NOT the issue (air & fuel were their diagnosis). I have not put in any mods now and will take your suggestion to leave the Racechip out. I am considering the post by Karan on the Steinbauer tho..

Similar problem in my 328i yesterday; I was overseas for two weeks and car was not used while I was away. On the first crank the engine stuttered and the drivetrain warning came on. It does not rev beyond 1200 rpm or so and on throttle the rpm drops too 800 or so; as if the engine choking.

Dealer is sending a flat-bed to collect the car tomorrow and suspects a fuel contamination issue. I find it a bit strange as I only tank up at Shell and the vehicle is only used personally by me. (clocked only 5400 km in 5.5 years !!)

Let's see the dealer's verdict in a day or so.

Hey Ecclipse do you have any mods on your 328i or is it stock. Were there any evident fuel leaks.

Also I have asked my dealer to give me a copy of the complete diagnostics run on the previous episode. Lemme know the verdict on yours.

Hope it is just a small glitch and wish your beamer a speedy recovery.

I've covered the drivetrain issue extensively in my 328i ownership thread it's because of fuel quality.

Hi Quickdraw!! I think my problem is not due to fuel, as I have always stuck to only one petrol bunk (Indian Oil - COCO) and last used the BMW fuel additive in Jan this year. Never the less, i haven't faced this issue again, so keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi,

I'm sorry to say COCO doesn't mean that their tanks etc are always maintained properly. Check and replace your fuel filter if necessary should give you more insight. Contaminants can get into fuel during transport and transfer stages and these tanks are not cleaned as often as they should under our conditions hence I'm always skeptical.

Thanks Quickdraw.. I will definitely check my fuel filters for any signs of contaminants.

Default Maintenance !

Long time i hadn't updated this thread but finally have a worthy post to share. So since the last service which happened on July 2018 (Post #509) the car was running perfectly fine, but as a precautionary measure carried our 2 jobs which are described as under;

1) Spark Plugs;

Last service which was done in July 2018 the car had crossed 30,000 kms so decided to change the spark plugs. This was decided as globally many people did recommend this job specially for the early gen N20 engines in which the spark plugs used are not long lasting.

Also changing spark plugs is always a good move to gain back the performance of the car. Hence went ahead & performed this job at Infinity BMW.

Patiently waiting for the jobs to start;

The ULTIMAT3- F30 BMW 328i. EDIT: Upgraded with ///M Exhaust, Injen Intake & Steinbauer Power Module-img_9210.jpg

These had to be ordered as it wasnt in stock.

^ Aprox INR 1750/spark plug.

Old Spark Plugs & Coil Pack out;

Ready to go in;

In the meanwhile the Injen Air Filter was cleaned too;

^ Should make the car breathe better

However the next up was this;

2) Electronic Wastegate Actuator;

So, the car had got hesitant a few times in the extreme high rpm range and had thrown a Drivetrain Error at me. This when the car was scanned pointed out to replace this particular part. Interestingly, when researched on the web & other BMW forums with age a lot of F30 328i (N20 Engines) owners have faced this part failure issue & my car being 6+ years old with 30k + kms on the odo it was not a surprise. Thankfully its not that expensive to replace this part (INR 9705/-) hence went ahead & did this job at BMW Infinity itself.

Yet again, Special thanks to friend, BHPian & Technical Head BMW Infinity, Turbhe workshop Maverick5490

Result;

With the precautionary maintenance of spark plugs, a new properly functional electronic wastegate actuator, cleaned out air filter & pleasant winters this car is all you need to thrill you out for our road conditions.
