re: The ULTIMAT3 - F30 BMW 328i EDIT: Upgraded with ///M Exhaust & INJEN intake!

Karan: I think a lot of your better performance is also due to your change of tires to the tubeless sports, especially the 245s at the rear. When I test drove a 3 series in sports mode, there was simply too much of tire spin / DSC light flashing on the default run flats which obviously did hamper things. Not that the default lost much composure, but IMO were simply too small for the power that the 320d puts out, forget about the 328i.

The traction control worked well as was evident when I tried taking a curve at a much higher speed on a negative camber road, it immediately cut power (or applied the brake) to one of the rear wheels and applied some braking to one of the front (or maybe the rear) wheels, to bring the car back in line without much loss of speed without me having to do anything much. Have you had the experience of something like this?

Well i agree but road surface is important too, my 245s at the rear struggle for traction too on concrete roads, but otherwise on tarmac its pretty crisp like wise for 320d i think on tarmac the 225s would be good enough

IMO that's just the TCS & ESP working hand in hand

Cant really recollect such a precise incident though.

Hi Karan

Great to see your 328i in action ! Many Congrats on the recent Mod!
Waiting for your video upload for the exhaust note.

Any marked difference in the handling of the car?
What numbers are you thinking - gain wise in the Nm & BHP ?

During our Forturer excursions we never get a chance to talk about your car.
Next time when you are organizing a German Cars drive to Lavasa, do let me know. I'll hop in !

Karan,

Waiting for the video! Low revs and High revs please. Just a thought, wouldn't a small sticker or a badge ( if at all available, and heat resistant )of the M look real good on those exhausts? ( which would cover the etching and protrude)

Thanks Satyen

Handling of the car had transformed when i had changed the tires from RFT's to Michelin PSS (Tubeless type), you can read the full review & my findings here;

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/tyre-a...k-com-usa.html

BMW hasn't defined any power increase. But some users have noted 2-3 whp gains majorly as the back pressure has decreased.

Also shall keep you updated about the next drive.

Sure shall look into that option, thanks.

Also the exhaust has been running in now only about 500 kms done, The sound should be breaking in around 1000 kms of running in, so video review will be up after that

re: The ULTIMAT3 - F30 BMW 328i EDIT: Upgraded with ///M Exhaust & INJEN intake!

Hey Karan.. it was quite an interesting story. I am buying a X3 2L D but was able to relate to your posts well with the home brand. My X3 will come today and just not able to sleep and doing just a lot of reading.

One question - when you drove from Gujarat to Mumbai after your registration, were you advised to take it easy on the engine ? like in its break-in period? I am reading in several posts that till 2000Km they talk about taking it easy on the engine. Mine will be a B47 2L D engine doing 190hp/4,000 and 400Nm/1,750 - 5,750 matted with 8 speed transmission. Because of 8 steps, I am thinking the RPMs will be low anyways. But getting conflicting remarks about the break-in period of engine. Let me know if you were specifically told anything about this by your sales rep.
When I checked in US-UK XBimmers forums for X3, they don't even know what break-in period is. I guess they just take the car and buzz off with their straight 6s

re: The ULTIMAT3 - F30 BMW 328i EDIT: Upgraded with ///M Exhaust & INJEN intake!

Most manufacturers always recommend a break-in period for a new car. Usually first 1-2k km advice is to take it easy. There are several reasons for this, not only engine related. New tires do not have optimal grip levels, it is only after a couple of hundred km that they 'settle' in and grip as designed. Same with the braking system - the braking will not be optimal till after the first few hundred kms and there are chances of pad glazing/discs warping. The engine and transmission also have to get some 'rough' edges smoothened out.

Yes one does have the warranty, modern manufacturing is much better, etc. etc. But in high precision / low tolerance cars like BMW, Audi, Merc, etc. these factors may play a more major role than in normal cars.

Initially there may be no perceived effect if you drive it off the dealer 'like you stole it', but component life probably would be affected.

Once a friend complained that he had to overhaul his engine in only 60k km. I was surprised but then I saw that his driver on starting the car immediately started revving it hard to 'charge the battery'. Revving an engine when cold and in neutral is a sure recipe for disaster down the road.

I am sure the BMW manual will specify the period if at all of break-in, or ask the dealer just to be sure.
