re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Sometimes the 4X4 makes your life so easy. Municipal corporate were making a drain in our street and save for 4 days, I could take out my Scorpio at will. It would climb over the dug out mud, sand stone chips and take me wherever I wanted to. Pic shown is pretty tame here, it was on my way back. I could easily climb almost everywhere in 4L.

I forgot to update a about a component which got changed in the past service at 50K.

The rear shock absorber's stopper [costing Rs. 1,600 a pair] was changed.

It was called as rear bum stopper by the ASC.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Scorpio will go to its 60K service by next weekend. It has crossed 59.5K mark. I will be sending it to a denter tomorrow to get minor scratches removed, paint the chassis's front frame part, it just might start to rust as I think the paint has got thinner with time. Inspected without removing the front bumper. I had put in scuff plates on doors which has caused a bit of rust in one door [barely noticeable] so will get that attended to as well.

This 60K will be a major one as I will be replacing its auto tensioner belt, coolant, maybe the front brake pads as well along with other consumables. I heard a minor sound from the engine at very low/idle revs, hence got the Scorpio inspected and one of the belt was very lightly frayed. The fraying part was from the outer layer and I honestly believe it will not have an impact on its strength but will still change it and hence don't take it out for longer drives. Wish I had gotten a picture of the same.

On a funny note, me and my family were hitching a ride in a friend's Skoda Superb for a small hangout and my 2.5 year old daughter was inconsolable, she was weeping profusely as she wanted to sit in her own big black car and not this, it was small as per her.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

The 60K service was carried out yesterday. All consumables were changed.
# Chain tensioner & pulley - As stated earlier, it started to make sound at low/idle revs and had frayed, the fray part couldn't be captured in a phone camera at a dimly lit place, so didn't snap it. The power steering had the typical noise when steering at very tight spots, so that belt was changed as well.

# 60K service = coolant replacement. Have kept 1 liter plus as backup as mechanics say, initially coolant top up maybe needed.

# Brakes = they were good till next service, the next service will see a change of both front & rear pads plus a change of rear brake drum liner. Haven't asked my mechanic as to why it needs a change.

# Front propeller shaft greased and both axle oils chaned.

# Clutch, gear & power steering oil chnaged

# Engine oil, diesel filter, AC filter, air-filter changed.

Bill for all parts was some 10K, below 10.5K. I am yet to drive it and will update as to how it feels.

Pending items are a wheel alignment job [how I wish Madhus were here] and a wax job. Will post pics once done. Meanwhile, this is how my phone's note screen looked like.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Back from a ~1600 kms drive to the North East.

A small hiccup, while going to Guwahati airport, the AC stopped cooling and let out hot air. A mechanic prodded a valve with a pin, some AC gas came out and all was well.

If someone pays me, I am ready to drive a RWD car/SUV on Guwahati - Shillong highway for my entire life, beautiful roads and I could spin these AT tires at my will on few turns, but after some time, resisted, didn't want to wear them out prematurely.

No rattles at 63K kms.

Great going past 60K Good to see a trouble free ownership. How about few pictures if not a small photolog of the journey. The north east sojourn is in my plan for a long time. Let's see when I can make it.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Not in any particular order. Must say, I love this SUV. My sister and nieces would have missed their flight had I been in any other car today.

While maize brings in cash for folks at my place, it creates a big jam and had it not been for Scorpio, they would have missed their flights and lots of important work for tomorrow.

That FE figure was when I was maintaining ~80kmph, over that it settles around 15.5-16 on infotainment. Actual is ~14, not bad for a 2 tonne 4X4 SUV.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Phew! What a month it has been, a ~1,600 kms trip to NE, two runs to Bagdogra/Siliguri [~400 X2] one to Patna via Muzaffarpur [900 with local running] where I had the pleasure to meet Nitesh who was kind enough to bring me a set of Bosch wipers as the Hella frameless were starting to streak. Thanks man

Had few squeaks/rattles from passenger seat which was looked into and the SUV is spooky silent [for a Mahindra ] The work run/s continue.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

Hi Sheel,

Have always been a lurker on your threads and have found them to be really informative. Thanks for sharing all this info with us.

One question I do have about the S10 is what has been the annual maintenance cost for the vehicle? Some of the older S10s are now coming into the used car market and a decent mileage one is great value-for-money if it does not cost a bomb to keep for a good 40-60K KMs. Thus the question.

The W105 and beyond Scorpios have a service which is based on kilometers. Now, I tend to change almost all consumables at every service and the cost is a bit over 10K. You may see post number #290. Front brake pads should cost somewhere around 5K. Rear ones are at 2K IIRC. No idea about clutch replacement as mine is healthy. Have tried 40kmph in 5th with full load and the SUV didn't skip a beat.

In a nutshell, they are reliable, the service is a bit expensive, but in all honesty is worth it, though have heard and seen Toyotas to be cheaper.

On one of those marathon drives. Did ~625 kms in a driving time of a shade over 8 hours, got a FE of 14+ kmpl, never crossed 100 kmph.

I am surprised as to how calm it is on my nerves, post that drive, I went to work, post that, went to play badminton as well. Unsure, if this would have been possible [for me] in a variety of cars.

And thanks to a large part to the Swift ZXI+ that I take out this behemoth only when I am driving to some distance [over 20kms].

Hi Sheel - can you share your reviews on the GY Wranglers? I am in the process of shortlisting and will mostly stay away from Yoko or Michelin. Hence my options are GY Wranglers, MRF Wanderers or the Apollo Apterra (HTs which have been doing a very good job till date).

My review of my GoodYear Wrangler AT/SA stays positive. I am looking for reasons to not go for them again when the time comes for a change [which is at least an year and over 30,000 - 40,000kms away].

I have no opinion about either the MRF and the Apollo, but I personally will not go with them.

re: Sheel's Mahindra Scorpio S10 4WD. 1,10,000 kms completed.

70,000 kms update.

It is been close to 46 months since the Scorpio S10 4WD came home and the ownership has been almost fuss free. No issues apart from usual Mahindra quirks [vacuum modulator in early phase].

Got the regular service done and the bill came to Rs. 9675. Labor was waived off.

The only irritant is one power window not working [LR], but because no one rarely sits there, it is hardly a bother and the required parts were not in stock. Got everything verified and everything is working perfectly fine when checked via OBD port.

I am getting the 5th year extended warranty today, it is somewhere around 17, 7xx or 17,8xx something.

Will post picture after a detailing session.
