My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up

This is my 4 th ownership review in Team-Bhp. A Renault K(W)ID has landed in our garage. I have driven 400 KM till date. I hope this review is helpful. I will update as I clock more miles in my Kwid

September 2015

Renault Kwid was making good buzz all around. Initial reviews were good and VFM price was hinted. Renault started online booking of Kwid before launch. We needed a small car for short trips. I thought Kwid would be Ideal car and made online booking.

September 14, 2015 : Booked Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Silver through online app for 5k. Booking was confirmed by kannur dealer within a week and delivery promised by October end.

October 2015 : No update from dealer

November 2015 : Shot several emails to Renault India and delivery assured within a month. I ended up buying a baleno petrol

December 2015 : I did not follow up with dealer/Renault.

January 2016 : No update from dealer and I emailed to Renault again and no further updates.

February 2016 : Dealer calls to inform car is in transit. Dad had seen Kwid in outback bronze color and preferred it over silver. I requested the dealer to change the colour and was quoted a maximum of 2 months waiting.

March 2016 : I get a call from dealer during March last week saying that Renault has allocated Kwid for me under special consideration, but not yet in transit.

April 2016 : Dealer informs car is in transit. I had booked S cross 1.6 and waiting for the same. So I thought I will postpone and buy kwid with 1000 CC engine. I mailed to CRM of dealership regarding change of booking.

May 3, 2016 : Dealer calls me to inform that Kwid RXT (O) in outback bronze is available and I can take delivery if I wish to. I informed the same to my dad. He says "OK let's buy." I suggested him to wait for 1000 CC engine. He turned down my advice and told me to proceed to buy Kwid saying "You don't need extra power in a car lighter than Nano."

May 4, 2016 : I drove to Kannur to do PDI and complete the loan formalities. I took loan from Renault finance. There were around 30 plus Kwids in yard and all were April manufactured. My car was manufactured on April 13, 2016. Everything looked fine and I told to go ahead with delivery process. Delivery was scheduled after a week(loan processing, TP etc).

ORVM design is changed!!

May 10, 2016 : Delivery Day

Delivery was scheduled at evening. I drove to Kannur with dad in Grand i10. Delivery process was smooth. Renault key chain was the only freebie offered. I had got temporary registration from Kannur RTO and will register at Kasaragod RTO within a month. New Rule, Kerala - Road tax should be paid even for temporary registration. MID showed 16.5 kmpl for 105 KM drive back home from Kannur.

Accessories

I am not a chrome fan. But I felt subtle chrome inserts on front grill and fog lights look good on Kwid. I got the same installed from dealer along with mats and mud flaps. Total cost : 4K

re: My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up

Exterior :

Kwid is the best looking hatch in it's segment. Design is inspired from it's big brother-Duster. A very clever & smart strategy by Renault!!

Kwid looks like a car atleast one segment up. Front looks macho due to flat bonnet with muscular lines. Blackened headlights also enhances the look.

Side profile also looks good with black cladding on wheel arches. Kwid begs for atleast 14 inches tyres and alloys.

I find the rear design very similar to my grand i10. It's only when viewed from rear, Kwid looks smaller (less width).

Paint quality is good compared to competition. I am not happy with panel gaps. It's inconsistent at most of the places. Build quality is average and thin sheet metal is so obvious when you open/close the doors. Even the bonnet & boot lid feels super light. This car is lighter than a Nano.

Looks like a big car!!

Interior :

My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up-img20160515wa0032.jpg

Interior plastic quality is above average. Fit and finish is acceptable. Kwid gets only front power windows and buttons are placed on control console which takes little time to get used to. There is not even internal adjustment knob for ORVM. MID shows distance to empty, average FE, litres of fuel consumed etc. Tachometer and temperature guage is missing. Speedometer is digital and looks pretty cool.

Kwid gets a manual AC even in top variant. It is decent enough. I have to check the full potential during hot sunny days.

Car is equipped with touchscreen navigation system (first in segment). It is pretty easy to use. Touch response is good. Only 2 speakers are provided at front and placed on dashboard. Sound quality is just above average.

Front door trims get 1L bottle holders. There is dual glove box and upper glove box has a bottle holder. Rear door trims do not get bottle holders and there is no cup holder too at rear. Door trims do not get any fabric inserts.

Front seats are thin and underthigh support is average. But it is better than completion. Legroom and shoulder room is above average. Headroom is impressive. There is no adjustable headrests/seat belts at front. It is easy to find a good driving position and it is one of those cars where bonnet edges are visible from driver seat. Steering wheel is good to hold but lacks tilt adjustment. AC control knobs do look good and has decent feel. Old school type adjustment for inside/outside air is an eyesore.

Rear seats are much better than competition. Underthigh support is decent and legroom is good. Headroom is more than adequate and shoulder room is above average. There are no adjustable headrests even at rear.

Boot space is huge with 300 L. It is 3rd highest for a hatch. There is no boot lamp. Suspension mountings are exposed. Rear seats are foldable but do not get 60:40 split.

re: My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up

Engine & Transmission :

My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up-img20160515wa0031.jpg

Kwid gets 800 CC 3 cylinder engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. Kwid has best power to weight ratio compared to competition but performance figures are behind Alto & Eon.

I am not happy with NVH levels. I hope it would get improved after run in period. My 27 year old Maruti 800 with stock Japan make engine sounds better. There is vibration on steering, clutch & gear. It gets settled with increasing revvs. There is no tachometer to look into for perfect gearshift points. Performance is decent. Kwid won't disappoint you till 80-90 KMPH. Overtaking maneuvers should be well planned. Top end is dead and engine too sounds crude. This car is not meant for performance. People who expect good performance should wait for 1L engine. I had old Alto K10 and it was indeed a pocket rocket. Light clutch and slick gear shifts makes driving easy in city traffic. There is no significant drop in performance with AC on. Kwid climbs inclines without any complaints and Yes, some effort is required if you get stuck halfway on a steep incline.

Ride & Handling :

Kwid has the best ride & handling in it's class. Ride quality of Kwid is the best out of all cars in my garage. It rides like a car which is one or two segments up. Broken roads are handled with ease due to 180 mm GC.

155/80 R 13 Ceat tyres offer decent grip. There is slight body roll but Kwid won't throw any nasty surprises. It holds the line pretty well while cornering. What's impressive is high speed stability. Renault has really done a good job with suspension to overcome the drawbacks due to light weight. Braking is average but better than competition. Tyres locked up once during hard braking. I wish Renault provided ABS.

re: My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up

Warranty :

Standard warranty is 2 years/50,000 KM. I have opted Extended warranty for 4 years/80,000 KM.

Service :

First 3 services are free at 2 months/2000 KM, 1 year/10,000 KM & 2 years/20,000 KM. Paid services would cost below 3K according to SA.

Fuel Efficiency :

FE of Kwid is rated as highest for petrol car on sale in India. But I have noticed better FE values in my Baleno(petrol) than Kwid on same roads. I have driven only 400 KM and MID showed FE figures between 16.5-18 kmpl. I hope it would improve further after run in period.

Few Additional Points :

Single Wiper Blade

Tiny ECU (Bosch) located next to Battery

Adequate firewall insulation

Sound insulation under hood

Headlight bulbs : easy to change

Inconsistent Panel Gaps
My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up-img20160515wa0009.jpg

ABC pedals not on same level
My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up-img20160515wa0027.jpg

What I Like :

1. VFM price
2. Looks
3. Ride quality & GC
4. Neutral handling
5. Touch screen navigation
6. Headroom
7. Decent interior space

What I Wish To Have :

1. Passenger Airbag + ABS
2. Tachometer
3. Reverse parking sensors

What I Don't Like :

1. NVH
2. Poor top end performance
3. Engine note at higher revvs
4. No internal adjustment for ORVM

Congrats Dr. Naren on your new purchase and brilliantly written ownership report. The kwid is indeed a brilliant proposition and have been considering this car as a replacement for my mum's alto as well. However, awaiting your next ownership report of the S-Cross 1.6

Kwid is definitely a good upgrade over Alto. It's a good package and best in class. I will post my S-Cross review soon.

Cheers!!

re: My Outback Bronze Renault Kwid RXT(O) - Now 5 years / 18,000 km up

Congrats on the Kwid Dr. Naren. Very well written review and the pictures were really nice.

The new ORVM design is the saving grace. I would have rejected Kwid sorely based on the earlier ORVM design if I was in the market for a car. And the initial mileage seems to be good enough. You can expect at least a 1-1.5 kmpl increase once the engine opens up a bit.

Doc, do you plan to remap this little wonder?

Will be waiting eagerly for the next review. Do keep this thread updated.

Remap for Kwid??

There won't be much gain for NA petrol engine. Also I don't think more juice can be extracted from this 800 CC engine.

Congrats on the acquisition Naresh, Liked the color and chrome inserts!

Have you noticed any squeaking noise from rear while applying brakes? Was surprised to notice the same in a 2 month old Kwid recently. Your observation will definitely help enthusiasts and owners to be informed of the issue.

Wish you happy miles ahead!

I have not noticed any squeaking noise while braking. I have not crossed 100 KMPH. Kwid masks the speeds pretty well. I was not happy with emergency braking where tyres locked up once.

Congratulations DR. Simple and subtle review I think the choice of chrome on grill looks cool. Nice to see cars from different manufacturers in you garage. A long term review of service could be anticipated?

Do you have to travel to Kannur for service, and 7 months was quite a long period to wait!

It looks like you ended up buying a Baleno and S cross while waiting for your Kwid.

Nevertheless, a nicely compiled review!! Wishing you many many happy miles with it.

How far is the service centre from your place??

Firstly hearty congratulations on the latest acquisition! It does look neat in that shade.
It might be OT but I cant resist myself from asking this. Why so many new cars in your garage at the same time? Is it like a joint family that needs a lot of rides or just the automobile enthusiast in you?
