re: My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha : Stage 3 Wolf (~200 HP / 420 NM). EDIT : 5 years & 72,000 km up!

Takes off after 2000rpm and doesn't let go until close to the red line! 60-120 happens in blink. Great stuff!

Yes, it's brutal after full boost is achieved. No loss in low end is something which I did not expect and really happy about it .

re: My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha : Stage 3 Wolf (~200 HP / 420 NM). EDIT : 5 years & 72,000 km up!

Few Points :

1. I have driven around 500 Kms on present Stage 3 Map.

2. Wolf had tried five Stage 3 files and the last one was the best.

3. This tune is not final. I would be getting a more powerful tune after the pending hardware mods. Wolf has also assured to work on race / drag tune .

4. S-Cross 1.6 has very tall gearing. The car revvs till 5000 RPM easily even in 3rd and 4th gears now.

5. Huge difference is seen in top end with Stage 3 Map ( 3000 to 5000 RPM ). There is good improvement in mid range and no loss at all in low end.

6. I did not notice any change in fuel efficiency. Need to do a long drive for proper analysis.

7. I have noticed that clutch slips occasionally. This happens only during 0-100 / quarter mile runs. I would blame myself here as I have launched the car hundreds of times .

8. MRF Perfinza's are holding very well. I was expecting lots of wheel spin if I floor the car in lower gears. There is nothing and what I get is only torque steer at times.

9. There is no madness or drama or violence in this tune. It doesn't feel after market at all. I don't know if all would like it. The car is quick with linear power delivery all the way till 5000 RPM.

10. I would like to thank few guys who helped me with this.
  • Rajiv from Wolf Moto for tailoring a good tune and providing great customer support.
  • Binoy from TVARA Performance for sourcing the turbo
  • Venkat from Blackworks for Turbo Installation.
  • Akshay from GT Tunerz for giving the ECU connection diagram. This helps to do remap without opening ECU. Thanks a lot man, this saved lot of time and I could test couple of maps from Wolf.

The drivability looks very good for a bigger turbo. Seems to pick up well from 1750 RPM. There seems to be sufficient juice even at 1500. Just curious, is the engine completely dead now at 1000 RPM in 3rd or is it comparable to stock?

How many kms have the tyres covered? My T-Jet has tyre change coming up in the next 10k. Perfinza is a strong contender (along with the can't go wrong Michelin Primacy 4). Since tyre life is an unknown area currently, I'd watching this space. The MRFs would definitely last longer for me than what they would for you with 420 Nm .

I wouldn't be surprised if you see better FE when cruising on the highway as many owners with upgraded turbos report the same (at least on the petrols)

Dead ? Not at all. The stock car would struggle and engine might also get lugged and switched off at 1000 RPM. My car still picks up from 1000 RPM .

Around 2500 Kms. Extremely happy with grip, steering feel, stability and braking.

50,000 KM Done

I drove around 500 km in last 24 hours, round trip to Davangere. The car was fully loaded with passengers and few bags in boot. Stage 3 setup is just effortless, perfomed very well even on ghats. Perfinza never fails to impress on curvy roads

I got 13 kmpl too, happy with it for a fully loaded car with Stage 3 tune on not straight level roads.

Missed taking pic of ODO at 50k Km

Horn Upgrade :

I got FIAMM AM80S - AM80SX installed at Auto Harbour, Manipal. It doesn't sound very loud inside the cabin , but very effective .

What are your IATs and EGTs at wide open throttle and cruising?

IAT is usually 10-15 degrees higher than ambient while "cruising". I noticed this is slightly better than my stock turbo.

But under WOT, it shoots up very quick ( thanks to 2 bars constant boost )..Say IAT is 40 degrees while cruising in 4 th gear , it will touch 70 degrees when I hit 5000 RPM. That reduces the power and MAF values too. Intercooler upgrade should solve this , as of now looking into intercooler cores from Garrett.

EGT : No idea !! S-Cross 1.6 doesn't have EGT sensor. Planning to install EGT sensor and Boost gauge as per recommendation by Rajiv .

Yes a good intercooler will help with a good plumbing. When you start a stage 2/3 its better to have EGT sensor, boost (not 100% needed) and AFR(petrol cars). I had all these in place to tune perfectly without blowing out anything.

There's a reason why Rajiv adviced to install boost gauge. ECU doesn't give reading more than 1.55 bars (actual boost ) even though the MAP sensor is rated till 3 bars.

Our target was to hit 2 bars constant boost , but we couldn't log. Rajiv is smart , he logged MAF and checked if boost change in ECU maps are making any difference .

15.1 seconds quarter mile timing in a cross over weighing close to 1.3 tons made my day. If not I would have never believed car is doing close to 200 HP .

EBC Ultimax2 rear pads have arrived, bought it from KS Motorsports Mumbai. These are entry level OE replacement pads, sadly EBC doesn't have even Greenstuff for rear.

I could have run little more on them , but the brakes were noisy at times. EBC pads were installed and no extra labour was charged as it comes under PMS.

The engine was very smooth and silent immediately after oil change. Thanks to my high speed runs, old engine oil would have been in bad state. I will post the initial feedback on EBC brakes after 1000 Kms. Dixcel experience was just average and not at all worth the premium price. I have tried 3 different types of pads and slotted rotors from Dixcel. Rotors are good, but none of the 3 pads from Dixcel were up to the mark, all had one or other issue. Not going to try anything from Dixcel again.

The car is running without any issues with Stage 3 Wolf map. I have observed that smoke has reduced a lot after service and Reliance diesel. Clutch might give up anytime , should be ready to spend at least 20k .

Sorry to say but all your issues with Dixcel point towards poor quality(pads cracking/shims melting/uneven wear). Surprisingly, you didn't face such issues with stock pads IIRC. Dixcel isn't worth the premium IMHO.

Dixcel pads are advertised for performance / fast road use. The life of brake pads purely depends on driving and Yes, i usually get lesser life when it comes to brake pads.

My take on Dixcel products :

Dixcel Extra Speed pads : Satisfactory, these pads are advertised for fast road use and high temperature resistance. The shims just melted and the reasoning by Dixcel is they are made of rubber and would melt at high temperatures.

Dixcel Extra Cruise pads : I have used them at rear. Surprised by the uneven wear. Maruti suspected brake system and everything was good. Do note that OE pads lasted for good 40k kms in same car before.

Dixcel M type pads : These were the costliest pads I ever tried and they were the worst, just horrible. It lasted only 2500 Kms.

Dixcel SD Slotted Rotors : I hope they are good. Not faced any issues till date. I have spent more than 30k on these rotors .
