HPI Megamax Air Filter Installed!!

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220118_161431.jpg

The OE airbox and intake design in S-Cross 1.6 is restrictive and also sucks in hot air. I had to choose between Cold air intake or something which will offer better flow. I have a massive Garrett intercooler and thought IAT wouldn't be much of a concern if I install an open air filter in engine bay.

My friend had installed BMC DIA in his stage 3 S-Cross 1.6 along with routing of intake hose to suck in cooler air. It was decent. My only concerns were oiling the BMC filter. AM racing told me about HPI dry cotton type air filter and it doesn't need to be oiled. It's also priced much lower compared to BMC DIA. I also heard good things about this filter installed in a stage 3 Polo 1.6 TDI. I finally decided to go ahead with HPI .

Installation was done at Engineering exponents Bangalore. They did a very neat job. Silicone hoses, clamps were used.

I have driven around 1000 km post HPI filter and impressed with the outcome.

1. Low end: Very good difference. This was really surprising as I was expecting difference mainly at top end. I guess the OE airbox is restrictive and HPI made a significant difference here. The car was pulling from even 800-900 rpm in 3rd gear, do note this is a stage 3 car with bigger turbo haha.

2. Mid and top end: It feels nice, engine is revving better.

3. Throttle response has become sharp.

4. Fuel economy: I see at least 5 percent improvement, really didn't expect this. I will update on this again after driving more.

5. IAT: It is same as stock setup. Thankfully IAT has not increased as the stock intake was also sucking in hot air.

6. MAF: Peak MAF has gone up by ~8 g / s which signifies improvement in power

7. Sound: There is hardly any difference on full throttle runs. I get BOV type sounds once in a while during gear shifts or half throttle driving.

8. Snapshot from HPI India instagram page regarding the features and cleaning

9. Price: Rs. 8300 (HP3FC-70) + Rs. 3000 (installation)

10. Dyno testing: Planned next month. Since there is increase in peak MAF, I am confident that the power level is up.

I managed to hit peak MAF of 170 g/s. All thanks to Garrett intercooler and HPI air filter.

Planning to upgrade the muffler soon. Not looking for improvement in sound. I hope the performance improves further

Hello Doc,

Great addition to your already spruced up ride!
I've been contemplating a similar setup on my Polo GT TDI. Since the air filter is completely exposed, how sensitive is this in regard of water splashes / ingress in wet weather conditions?

Cheers and thank you!

HPI filter is direct fit in Polo TDI. It's not adviced to pressure wash the engine bay. There should be no problem during rains as the filter is situated higher up.

Updates:

Performance muffler by Engineering Exponents

Jayant suggested to try performance muffler as it would help improve the top end.

OE Muffler

The design looks very restrictive. Inlet and outlet is on same side, the exhaust gas flow is rotated around inside the muffler

Engineering Exponents made a custom SS304 muffler for my car.

I have driven more than 2000 km after this mod. These are my observations:

1. Good improvement in mid range and top end
2. Nice sound and the engine is free revving
3. Minor improvement in fuel economy
4. Smoke levels are higher now

IC outlet hose fixed

The IC outlet hose was slightly compressed

Engineering exponents fixed it with silicone hose

It was a fantastic drive. The road is brilliant after Salem with minimal traffic, all the way to Kanyakumari.

The current ODO is 83,000+ km. No new mods planned, will get the service done after Aurangabad trip which is happening soon

Looks sick, probably sound sick too. Please upload an exhaust video if possible.

That aside, the moment I saw just the title of the post, I knew who it was going to be

I'm disappointed. I was half expecting you to do something like this (img) to get the full exhaust sound

The OE design does look very restrictive. With change in direction of exhaust gases there are enormous backpressure created on the engine.

But please do check which materials were used in the design of the muffler as exhaust temperature can easily exceed 750 Deg C. Also does the new muffler weigh more than the stock one? If so pls do check if the existing brackets for fixing it to the chassis is strong enough as additionally the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle has changed along with increased torque output.

With an increase in smoke level do you expect to have any issues with the PUC? Ask the firm to perform diagnostics to check if the ECU is logging increased exhaust level. If this level has increased (by certain %) over a consistent period of time, you will get a check engine warning light.

I liked the new exhaust note. it does sound sporty.

Not possible for the temperature to be as high as 750 degrees at Muffler anyway. EGT of this value would be seen only at turbo inlet side. Muffler is made of SS304 and glass wool is placed inside for sound insulation.

It is lighter

PUC checks are not done when engine is under load. The engine is revved in neutral and there is no smoke.

There is only pre-cat sensor in my car. Hence, no issues even with decat downpipe.

Yes, the sound is addictive
