Hey Naren - what headlights are you using right now? Stock projectors? They look sweet with such good throw. I’m planning for a headlight upgrade on my Brezza. Any leads would be helpful.

IPH D2H Bi-Xenon Projectors in Headlights
IPH Bi-Xenon Fog Projectors

Headlight projectors are the same as in my Baleno. You can refer to that thread for more details

Dear Dr. Naren, as you have good experience with ICE mods in S-Cross, can you please share your opinion regarding upgrading the speakers with factory fitted HU only?

I intend to replace factory fitted speakers but do not want to add any after market wiring. The main challenge is that tweeters are located in the dashboard. Is it possible to retain the stock wiring while replacing the front speakers with 6.5” components and rear with 6.5” coaxials?

I also intend to do full damping of all four doors and add a Pioneer Audio Processor to increase the sound quality with factory HU. Dashboard location of the tweeters is the only hurdle and I wish to keep the stock looks intact.

One possible solution is to keep crossovers behind the HU and retain stock wiring for tweeter and speaker.

There will be decent improvement with better speakers + damping. Amplifier would be nice to have.

Connectors are available so that everything would be plug and play.

re: My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61

I didn't update the thread for quite sometime now. The reason is I was busy driving to different places . I drove to Mumbai, Aurangabad, Kochi, Munnar, and Alleppey. ODO is up by 6000 km since last update and it is nearing 90k km now. There are couple of updates to post, will share the light upgrade which was done in May.

Light Upgrade: IPH D2H Bi-Xenon Projector in Headlight + IPH Bi-Xenon Fog Projector!!

I was running with XP Micro fog projector which is basically IPH fog projector with XP sticker. The output had diminished as the projectors were almost 5 years old. I decided to get the lights upgraded during a trip to Mumbai. Got it done at Xenon it, same place where I had got the projector setup done in Baleno

Xenon it had worked on couple of S-Cross Alphas, the owner himself owns S-Cross. Hence I did not have any concerns for the eye operation of my S-Cross.

I got the same IPH D2H projectors which I had installed in Baleno.

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220801_201316.jpg

I did not click many pics during the installation. Just a few WIP pics.

The new projectors were flush fit. Installation was not difficult. I got the headlights smoked too .

IPH Bi-Xenon fog projectors were also installed. We used 65W Zimmer HID kit.

Fog projectors were also easy and clean install. The overall installation took around 3 hours.

I was very impressed with the light output, it's massive.

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220512_005006.jpg

Do note that these are Bi-Xenon projectors, there won't be any issue for the oncoming traffic when the projectors are in low beam, just need to get the alignment right.

I enjoyed the 1000+ km night drive to Bangalore. It was effortless. I did many night drives after this upgrade.

Few pics clicked at my farm, I find the smoked headlight look very hot.

It's been more than 2 months since the light upgrade. The output is great and highly recommended upgrade for pre-facelift S-Cross Alpha.

Bangalore to Mumbai to Aurangabad to Mumbai to Bangalore Drive (May 7-14, 2022):

Odo at beginning of the journey

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220507_065807.jpg

We left at 7 am from Bangalore. Traffic was thin and could get of the city quickly. The road was brilliant after Tumkur, not much traffic too. I drove non stop for 430+ km and hit Hubli in less than 4 hours.

After 2.5 hours of driving

We entered Kolhapur city for lunch, didn't want to miss the delicious Kolhapuri Thali

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220507_135443.jpg

Spent around 2 hours for lunch, relaxed a bit and continued our journey. The traffic started increasing after Kolhapur. We got major traffic before Pune and that killed our average speed .

It felt relaxing after we exited Pune and entered the expressway.

I honestly do not like Pune Mumbai expressway. Tumkur to Hubli strech was way better.

Drove 1000 km in 12 hours, including 2 hours lunch break at Kolhapur. Average speed was little above 100 kmph.

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220507_191439.jpg

It was a fantastic drive. 200+ HP S-Cross 1.6 is a highway missile haha.

I just relaxed at a friend's place in Mumbai. Spent the weekend in Mumbai, went out shopping as I had to drive to Aurangabad for a wedding.

My car is lowered and GC is less than 130 mm. I couldn't afford to be adventurous and take any road to reach Aurangabad. I got in touch with highway expert Parag Bhai and he suggested to go via Nashik to Aurangabad. We left from Mumbai after breakfast on a monday. I had to reach Aurangabad by evening for wedding. The trip was uneventful, but I ran out of luck. There was a loud sound from rear tyre, pulled over the car to road side immediately.

Found out the culprit and changed the tyre

It looked huge and I was skeptical that the normal puncture plug wouldn't work. Got in touch with Nikhil and he suggested to visit Bharat tyres at Nashik. I did not exceed 100 kmph till I reached the tyre shop.

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220509_134811.jpg

The owner of Bharat tyres was very friendly. It was also nice to meet a malayali in Nashik.

Oh wait, look at this culprit. Never seen such a huge thing puncturing the tyre before

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220509_135019.jpg

They fixed the puncture using a patch, even the mushroom plug wouldn't work here. That thing was so long that it had hit the alloy wheel too. Luckily the Lenso survived with scratches. Thanks to this incident, the trip got delayed. It was a good decision to leave Mumbai early, anyways made it to Aurangabad by late evening.

My Maruti S-Cross 1.6L Alpha | Stage 3 Wolf (202 HP / 438 Nm) | EDIT : Sold - Pg 61-img_20220509_191725.jpg

We drove back to Mumbai next day, took the same road. I spent few days in Mumbai. I also got the light upgrade done.

We left to Bangalore after this meet. It was past 12 am. Thanks to the light upgrade, the night drive was effortless. We got a major road block on expressway though.

Clicked few pics after entering Karnataka

The drive was uneventful. There was some traffic after Tumkur and the usual Bangalore city scenes. Finally reached Bangalore for lunch.

ODO at the end of trip , covered almost 3000 km

I am also proud to say that the lowered S-Cross did not face any challenges in this 3000 km trip. I had pushed the engine to its limits and it never let me down.

Kerala Trip (June 2022)

I had driven to Kasaragod from Bangalore to spend few days at farm. Bro suddenly came up with a plan, he was like let's go to Kochi. I always prefer night drives on Kerala roads. Traffic is insane during day time, the national highway feels like city drive. The time difference is also huge, I take half of the time at night to reach Kochi from Kasaragod. We left at 12 am from Kasaragod and reached Kochi by 6 am.

At Trident Kochi

The food was good. We stayed here for 2 nights. Room was decent.

Also spent a evening at Taj Malabar

The plan was to drive back to Kasaragod. But, we decided to drive to Munnar. I love these last minute plans haha. We checked out after breakfast at Trident and hit the road to Munnar.

On the way to Munnar

It was a different experience. This drive was not about hitting high speeds, enjoyed the handling of lowered S-Cross and 200+ HP on narrow ghat roads.

Checked in at Panaromic Getaway. This place is few Km away from Munnar town.

We stayed here for 2 nights, just relaxed at the property. We did not go out to explore any places. The last minute plans comes into picture again and we head to Alleppey

The drive was good from Munnar to Alleppey. Luckily I didn't get any stretch of bad road.

Checked in at Sterling Lake Palace

This is a beautiful property. We spent 2 nights here, didn't go out to explore the town. The resort has complimentary boat ride on Alleppey backwaters for guests. It was a good experience.

2 day Kerala trip got extended to a week. We finally decided to head back to Kasaragod. We drove during day time. Traffic was crazy as expected, took multiple breaks.

This trip was all about last minute plans and it worked out economical too. The last minute deals on Agoda app was too good. We got amazing deals on all the properties.

Ok let me answer this before anyone asks, I did get something done to my car in Kochi. It's not an upgrade, I got the map detuned to reduce smoke levels haha. I guess the power level would be down by 10 HP now. But, the new map is more refined and overall driveability is better.

90k Km Service done:

I had driven close to 25k km with lowering springs, loved the experience. But, the condition of roads which I frequently travel became worse after monsoon. It was difficult to judge the depth of potholes filled with water.

The front right fender lining got damaged due to a hit and came off.

Price: Rs. 835

The replacement fender lining from Maruti doesn't come with cushion / foam piece as seen on the old part.

ODO was nearing 90k km, decided to get the service done. I had the following parts with me.

1. Motul X-Cess 5W40 Engine oil
2. Liqui Moly Ceratec
3. Purolator oil filter
4. Purolator fuel filter
5. Rowe Dot 5.1 brake fluid
6. Zic 75W-85 gear oil
7. Liqui Moly gear oil additive

I also decided to install the OE springs back, thanks to the road work near my area in Kasaragod.

I went to Maruti for service this time. Mechanic noticed that the strut mounts are worn. To my surprise, Maruti service centre in a village had the super rare SGP strut mounts for S-Cross in stock.

PMS charge for 90k km service was 2500 + tax, thanks to Tier 3 city. If you are getting it done in Nexa service at Bangalore, it is 4400 + tax. Labour charge is really high in tier 1 cities.

Bye bye lowered stance

I have driven more than 1000 km post service. The engine feels nice and smooth post fresh oil + Ceratec. The brake pedal feel is good with Rowe Dot 5.1 brake fluid. I was expecting smoother shifts with Zic gear oil + Liqui Moly additive. But, I haven't found any difference. I was expecting significant change in handling post OE springs, but didn't find a major difference on normal driving. It was raining heavily during my drive to Bangalore from Kasaragod. I need to experience it when I get to test the car properly someday.

Quick visit to Engineering Exponents, Bangalore:

HPI filter clamp was broken. They fixed with a new clamp and also added an additional clamp. Hope it doesn't break again.

I need to change the clutch set and release bearing soon. There is mild sound from clutch release bearing. I have the parts with me , will get it done at Engineering Exponents.

Noob question: Won't the increase in horsepower stress out the pistons head and the block?
I mean, can the engine take the extra power? Will it cause issues in the long run? What is the limit of horsepower?

Diesel engines are built strong and we have lot of headroom to exploit. The OE turbo won't be able to handle so much power, that's why the turbo is upgraded along with bigger intercooler.

Tuners abroad have achieved 330+ HP without modifying the engine internals .

Just changing the narrative

Turbos are upgraded to create power more than being able to handle the power. A bigger turbo enables higher compression ratios of air. Higher compression ratios heat the air up more hence to compensate that you need a bigger intercooler. So now you have compressed air at a lower temperature means that inside the cylinder of a fixed volume you have more mass which will enable clean combustion of more diesel resulting in the power and torque you get.

S-Cross 1.6 has oversized OE turbo. It's a turbo which was used in old 2.0 MJD 140 HP engines. We can achieve 180+ HP even on OE turbo, but it wasn't reliable. A friend blew the OE turbo while testing .

The turbo what I upgraded is not significantly bigger, but it can handle 180-190 HP safely

Rule of thumb is there is a fair margin in almost all engines to the tune of atleast 40 to 50% and more so in Diesels, but there is no hard and fast rule and there is no definitive answer for this, companies spend Billions to develop an engine, with thousands of hours of R&D and immense money at their disposal, no one outside has that kind of resources.
Having said that, there are reputed tuners and you have other People's cars and their long term experiences to paint a fair picture of what is safe for that particular car/engine.
Threads like this one are immensely valuable for ones who do dare to upgrade.
In international scene there are some popular engines like Toyota 2JZ which have novels written on them and have been tuned to infinity and beyond and there are countless examples and experiences for that, so it is almost as safe as it gets to tune it without trouble, since whatever can be done is done on that, but same can't be said for say Hyundai U2 Diesel engine which doesn't have a whole lot of people who have upgraded it and it has lasted a long time after doing that, not saying it can't or is not possible, but we can't say for sure.

Bottomline is it is not for the faint of heart, not for people without a lot of time, money and patience and you can potentially go very wrong if you push it enough.
