Jonesanto Hats off to your commitment for owning & maintaining a car for this long! We used to have a Verna Crdi back in 2009, the power & refinement was in a different league for its time. I still regret selling that car!

There is no doubt that cars built back in those days can last for a very very long time. We need more threads like this where people really care for their cars and drive them for decades.

Just curious, what all repair works/replacements you have done in the car?

Hyundais from that generation really are bulletproof. I have a 2006 Sonata(Embera) in the US, that's run 170000 miles(around 275000 kms).
But the engine is a 3.3 V6, I believe the Indian version has a 2.4 petrol.

For some reason, I really used to hate this car, but it gradually grew on me, (I love muscle cars, and Elantra with that long hood kinda remains me of a muscle car) if you're planning to retain the car and pamper it, I would suggest new headlights. The total look of the car changes when the lights are shiny and the lighting also improves a bit as the old headlights with thise scratches and yellow tint loose a bit of illumination. I did the same with my 2011 Micra DCI. Now, when ever I give it for Teflon coating, it looks almost like a factory fresh car. Also, I think the tyres might get hard as it is not being used regularly. I would advise you to keep an eye on them as well and change them if they're too old. Looking forward to reading more adventures with your ride.

I guess there comes a point where these cars become more than just machines to us, and I guess we both are all well past that point - you especially so at 4.5 lakh kms! A reliable machine that never let you down and surely some nice memories associated too - good enough reason to have it in the family for a few more years.

Almost a year and no updates?

Sold our 2003 Accent 1.6 about 4 months ago. Was driven only for around 1.2 lakhs km, still drove like a charm, in an unassuming way.

First of all, congratulations on your new Compass purchase, bro. We both were hanging on to a car that is dear to our hearts, but as a primary drive, we had to move on and find something else at some point. I am sure Punto will always hold a special place, no matter how many cars you purchase in the future. Wishing you all the best with your Compass and happy motoring!

No update is good news, brother. There is absolutely nothing to update. Car is running flawlessly, but strictly city runs only. I recently picked up an Innova and usage of Elantra has come down. Last year max it would have covered 5K. I did annual service on May and getting parts is a real pain now, I have to order everything one month in advance. Yet, from boodmo I got fake diesel filter even after paying the amount for an original one. My mechanic said, since the running is low and last year we changed diesel filter I can skip that for now. The one I have in the car is original and it is better to keep that one. Car is parked at parents’ house, I wash the car every Sunday, if I am in town and use the car once in a week and she runs trouble free.

All good things come to an end…


In the last 6 six months I would have driven Elantra probably for about 500km and car being old and not regularly using started showing small issues.

Cabin light went kaput for the first time in 17 years

One rear window not working for the first time in 17 years

Rear number plate light, it has two bulb and one went kaput for the first time in 17 years

Last week that after washing noticed left side headlight fogging up, car has not hit anywhere, and parked under proper shade all the time. Could be the rubber beading getting weak.

AC control unit backlit was not working then it came back on.

So basically, everything related to electrical and fixed all issues except for headlight fog issue.

My cousin who is back from abroad starting a business in Bangalore, he offered to purchase the car. I said “It’s not for sale. If you want, you can use it.” But car in my name and using it in Bangalore and me still being in Kerala could complicate thing if there is any incident. Last week he visited again for business purpose and took Elantra to Bangalore and back and offered to purchase the car again.

This guy is a car enthusiast and I know he will take care of the car. Even though I love the car dearly, not being used on a regular basic creating problems and I feel like I am slowly killing the car. It’s better to give it to someone who will actually use it. Car still got plenty of life left in her.

So last evening car has gone to Bangalore and when I go there in December will finish the paper works.

People usually take pics and stuff but I just did not have it me to do all that. Last night I did not sleep properly.

Paragsachania’s Wagon R is sold, CrAzY dRiVeR’s Punto is sold, though not in their league, now Elantra is also almost gone.

It feels right. But it’s emotional. Saying goodbye to anything you’ve done that long is hard.

Time to face the music and move on.

Ever saw the car you once sold again?

I have sold many cars over the years and not once I’ve had the chance to see them on road or parked somewhere again. But Elantra went to my cousin and after a gap of six months I got a chance to see the car and even better, I could drive it again with a full grin on my face! You own a car for 17 years and run it for 4.5 lakh kilometers, words can’t explain what that car means to you.


Such a content feeling knowing the car is in good hands and doing duties.
