Well, there is another brand which would go on and on provided OE spares are used - Mitsubishi!! My Lancer GlxD has clocked about 220,000km and the only major parts replaced are clutch assy (about 5000km ago), rear shocks (twice) and timing belts assy (valve timing belt, balancer timing belt, valve timing belt under pulley, 2 tensioners). The other usual periodic replacements have been brake pads, alternator, AC, power steering belts etc. The car only feels better with age and is one of those vehicles that is a great combination of outstanding build quality and great engine feel/character. And need I mention handling?!

In 2006, I was 15 years old. At that time all I did was go through all the brochures of cars and knew the differences in model variants in the back of my head. And I specifically remember that the Accent came with tinted factory glasses. So even in your case, the glasses should be tinted. By company made, do you mean manufactured by the company itself. I am pretty sure they have had a supplier.

re: 4,50,000 km on my 2006 Hyundai Elantra CRDi - And going strong!

What a beautiful thread about a beautiful car! I hope I can keep my car this clean over the next 10 years and touch 5lac km on it! We should all strive to keep our cars in top notch condition. It helps save SOO much money!

Car owners that have managed to keep their cars for 2L+ kms should share little/everyday pearls of wisdom on how to keep the car in awesome condition. Of course, teambhp already has tons of info already.

I had a yellow 2010 Nano for 5 years and ran it for 40k Kms. Exchanged that in 2015 for the new awesome Nano with power steering and openable hatch (manual tranny). I take such good care of it because I intend to keep it for 5L kms. Nano's quality is faarr below Corollas, Qualis's and Elantra's but if I run it properly and service it regularly, it should last me that long. In Bombay city, all cars are anyway moving at 10kmph so I intend to keep the Nano only for my travel purposes. Uber/OLA/Myles are there for bigger car needs!

re: 4,50,000 km on my 2006 Hyundai Elantra CRDi - And going strong!

Given that it is a 12 year old car, that is actually averaging out to 90 Kms per day for 12 long years. Man you must love driving. And congratulations, She is a beauty !
I thought I was doing pretty well on a 2010 car with 1.5L Kms until I read this. You sir are in a different league altogether !

Thanks, there is no doubt it is a reliable car, but in the end, it was the maintenance from day one which made the car run so much without much issues. Even small things were not overlooked.

Thanks, landcruiser, car aged really well, when it was in production, major negative factor was its looks. I always liked how Elantra looked. Even I doubt I will ever find a buyer who will take care of this car, ridiculous resale value is also because you can't find a clear car, even someone has one, they won't be selling it. People with very low budget will buy the car because it is cheap and for sure it would not have been a maintained one. He won't be able to spend so much on parts and services. Also, if it never sold well when it was in production, never gonna sell well in the used market either. Since the car is reliable, I should keep it. Car is in Kerala due to parking problem in Bangalore, my family also very keen on taking care of cars.

Thanks, i74js, Escort was a brilliant car, market was not prepared for a car like that back then I guess. In my opinion, if no one is driving or taking care of the car, you should have exchanged it.

Thanks, yogesh, I don't want any reward from Hyundai, I don't want any publicity for my car, I just want to share the experience with fellow BHPians. I have learnt a lot about taking care of cars through Team BHP. Keep learning new stuff everyday. Let the car do its duty like any other day, it's just another lakh covered.

Hey, Ramsagar, have a feeling you know how difficult it is to maintain the car in pristine condition. Nothing is easy, patience, patience, patience. Find the time to get the small niggling issues fixed, an example, one day I got out of the car, see the break lights are ON. I check multiple times, what could have happened? Found something on the mat, a button thingy, plastic made. Visited my electrician, told me, it's common in Hyundais, went to genuine parts shop, he did not have stock, ordered it, in fact, ordered two, it was 50rs a piece, and fixed it. For the time being break lights were disconnected. If I were to go to Hyundai, they change the entire set, costs around 3K. So depends on what it is, I source the parts locally also, one advantage of being in Bangalore, you can get parts easily.

Golden Logo came with the car, I think it was a part of so called "Leather Pack." It is top of the line variant. If I am correct, it was on sale for one year only, in 2007 it was, non alloy, no air bag, no climate control option were selling for really cheap price. Got my hands on the car at the correct time. They stopped the car in 2007.

Congrats on completing 4L km. Sometimes a car ages so well it becomes a member of your family. The best thing you can do to a car is keep her driving
Hi, NiInJa, thanks, it is a member of our family, brand new Redi Go is parked on the side, preference is still for the Elantra. I am still running on stock tint, I never got caught at any point, because this transparency is 70%, means 30% tint, and that is legal limit. I remember Contessa came with tinted glass.

Hi, vinayrathore, big mistake you did with Accent, I never compromise the quality of major parts. Elantra timing belt kit will cost you 8K now, I bought if for 4K also, price kept on increasing, which is really sad. This a major reason, people don't maintain or sell the car, since resale value is bad and the car is old, no one would want to go through the pain of maintaining it.

Thanks, sumeethaldankar, CRDi, of course it has turbo, it uses a fixed geometry turbocharger. Super reliable I must say, if taken care well. My uncle had an Ambassador, when I was a kid, I see him start the car in the morning do the cleaning, and asked him, why the car is on? He said, diesel engines should warm up before using. Good old fashion advice. So when I got my first petrol car, I started practicing the same. After long runs, keep the engine idle for some time before switching off.

AFAIK almost all cars equipped with AC comes with tinted glass from the factory, my 01 Zen has tinted glass & so does my uncle's 09 M800 AC. Though the transparency level & the color of tint varies between different cars. Most of the cars don't have the sticker on the glass where the percentage of transparency is written, our Zen & Ecosport doesn't have the transparency value written on the glass. Though our erstwhile Punto had a similar sticker like your car (transparency values were written), transparency for the windshield was 75% & the rest of the glasses had 70% transparency.

My 01 Zen with factory fitted tinted glass

Fiat Punto's tinted glass, slightly more darker than the Zen

Wow, that's a great looking car. Most people will have their cars in worst condition at 40K kms.
I usually judge people by the way their car looks, and by looking at your car I can say you're a smart and caring person or a true gentleman.

Hey sjain, all the best with your endeavour of achieving 5 lakh. Nano is a good car and each car got it's on purpose and character. I think Nano was marketed badly at the beginning.

Thanks, sandman, I love driving, but was really crazy at one point, I think it was the age, I got this car in my early 20's, I remember my first trip to Mumbai in this car...

Friend: Hey, we need to go to Mumbai, you can't ask me for what. And we're taking your car.

Me: Do we really need to go?

Friend: Yes.

And that was it. Lot of good memories, I can't just do all that now, perks of bachelor life I guess. Back in the days I used to travel a lot for work too. All that changed now, now I sit at my office and make others run I bought Octi in 2014, so Elantra is not running much after that, if I were to use Elantra as my primary car even now, it'd have covered some crazy miles by now. But, it has done its part beautifully, it is still running, but will take it slow from here on.

Hey, Kaushal, thank you for your kind words, I used to wax the car every 3 years, have not done anything after 2014, this year will do interior cleaning also. Other than washing nothing has been done for a long time to make her shine, all that will change this year. Thanks again.

@Jonesanto,

Hats off to you for making your Elantra the He-Man of diesel sedans.

I don't think there would be many who'll show as much perseverance as you have in maintaining a gold car like gold.

Congratulations. Way to go !!!

re: 4,50,000 km on my 2006 Hyundai Elantra CRDi - And going strong!

Man oh man. 400k km in our harsh conditions is some achievement indeed. You hear of such high mile cars only in the western world.

I still have my reservations about Hyundai diesels. While they are the quietest and most refined diesels you can buy today, I am not so sure about longevity. Their current line of diesels are no longer a collaborated effort.

The Elantra has to be the most sorted Hyundai we ever got. I did not know the car was 12lacs! I recall my friend paying around ten on road or maybe I heard him wrong. This was probably around the same time.

The car was definitely way ahead of its time. Had funky purple lit clocks and was tech loaded. I'd also never experienced a diesel sprint as fast as the Elantra.

The Elantra isn't the segment leader but if you look at what you get, the car is all about quality and value. The interiors have remained top notch with every generation of the car that was sold. The latest and the one just before does not have the engine to compete with Skoda but you're not going to complain either.

The Japanese car makers can no longer ignore what Hyundai are doing. The Koreans are serious about their cars.

re: 4,50,000 km on my 2006 Hyundai Elantra CRDi - And going strong!

Congratulations! It was such a joy to see that odometer on the Elantra. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

I think having a higher displacement engine and all those highway runs helped here. Must have been a walk in the park for your Elantra. But I am not taking anything away from your upkeep of the car - it looks and I am quite sure feels great too. Kudos!

This review is great for some of us holding onto the immense fun-to-drive and so called "flop cars" with a bad resale in our market.

We got a 2015 Fiesta which has done 50k now. And hopefully, with many more 50s to go like that. While I don't spend much on detailing and all, I do not leave any stones unturned to keep the mechanical bits in top condition like attending to every sound right-away, changing oil every 5k or giving time for engine to warm up every time etc.

Hope to see this thread updated every now and then! Keep havin fun!

Thanks, sandeepmohan, no doubt Elantra was way ahead of it's time, the equipment list were so good it could put other cars twice its price to shame. It was a VFM car. I think CRDis are pretty reliable for 1.5 lakh easily, their refinement levels are impressive, I drove the new Verna diesel, and it's smoother than a petrol engine. Now for my generation Elantra, Hyundai can't take much credit at all, it is not Hyundai designed engine, it is a Detroit Diesel engine, American made. What Hyundai did well here is, they put all the things together brilliantly. Mated it with an amazing gear box, reliable fixed geometry turbo, overall they made a fantastic car and unfortunately Indian market missed to find this cars potential.

Thanks, deetjohn, Fiesta is a proven engine, it will easily do some lakhs if you are planning on keep it for the longer run. I always loved how Ford cars handle, it was the service and niggling issues in the earlier models gave bad name to Ford. Escort, Ikon, Mondeo... Too many issues, it was with Figo they started picking up and I do believe their service is much better and cars are much reliable.

My car did so much is mainly because of the highway runs, it is a breeze to drive her in the highways, you always feel comfortable and confident. Because the engine is 2.0 category, it is capable of achieving some serious speed if required, over the years I have seen many people with much expensive cars surprisingly looking at me, definitely hurt some peoples ego too, but I am never the one for any kind of competition, if I see anyone is trying to compete, I will just let them go.

I will try my best to update the thread and keep having fun. Cheers!

Heartiest congratulations on achieving the 400k milestone.

Regarding the scheduled maintenance you mentioned that post 200k kms, you change the oil every 5-8k kms but what was the service duration before 200k kms? Throughout the life of the car what grade of oil have you been using? And do you use synthetic or mineral oil?

Insights regarding scheduled maintenance will be helpful.

Hey jonesanto, I saw a well maintained gold colour Elantra pass by in Jakkur today at 3:30pm. I dont think there can be anybody else with the same colour Elantra in such a great condition.

If it was your car, then all kudos and respect to you sir. I just hope I could maintain my Cruze for next 6-7 years until I could buy my replacement EV (Hopefully a Tesla). With Chevrolet shut down, maintaining it more than a couple of years from now is going to be a big challenge.
