Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later

Great to see a thread on tbhp on Xylo ownership. I too own a 8 year old xylo E4 and have crossed 56000 kms and have great memories of traveling across karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu. The vehicle's excellent cabin space has provided us ( as a family ) best comfort on road travel so far by any vehicle, and my family is unwilling to part with this marvellous vehicle on account of its ideal cabin.

Touchwood, I never had any trouble except when the Center joint bearing had to be replaced in the middle of a journey. Even then sourcing the right mechanic and spares was no trouble at all. I wonder if I can handle issues on any other brand of cars, so easily with hardly any damage to my wallet.

That is well-maintained car you have got there, Rajesh. I agree with your point on the cabin space. In my opinion, it is the best in a car at this price point.

Re: Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later

Well, after a short trip to Gudibande Fort with my dog and an impromptu trip to Chennai with the family, it was time for the annual service.

Video log of the Gidubande Fort Hike -

Kilometres since the last service - 9,008.
Time since the last service - 1 year.

Purchased the basic service items at JC Road and took the car to my FNG.

The paid service included some basic checkpoints which was taken care of first. The tyres and brakes were then removed and the brakes were inspected and cleaned.

Next, the engine oil was drained and the engine oil filter and diesel fuel filter were replaced.

Some kids from a local Montessori had a garage visit and took pictures with all the cars.

Finally, the tusker was given a shampoo bath. All shiny and clean!

And ready for another year of adventures!

Re: Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later

While reversing from my parking spot I observed some oil on the garage floor. On inspecting the car's underbody, I was sure that there was a leak. So I took it to my local mechanic who raised the car and within 5 minutes was able to diagnose the problem to a missing breather valve (dummy) in the transmission. He was surprised as this is the first time he had ever seen this happen in a car.

He told me that he would find it hard to source this part and told me to take it to the ASS. I was warned not to drive the car for more than 5 kilometres because I had lost a lot of transmission fluid already. I immediately took it the mechanics at the MASS and their first reaction was that of surprise as well. They told me I had to leave it overnight as they did not have the part and by now I had lost almost all the transmission fluid. Well, it had been 25,000 kilometres since I had replaced the transmission fluid, so I took this as an opportunity to get it completely drained and replaced.

Picked up my vehicle the next afternoon. No one seems to know what could have caused it, but I'm assuming that pressure washing the underbody during the service caused it.

And that is the story of how I ended up spending 1000+ INR because a 25 INR plastic part failed. On a positive note, the clutch feels a lot better now!

Just wanted to check here. Are these oil brands approved or recommended by the service guys. I mean they should have given some insights on these right when you were not getting it done in the service centers?

XUV / Scorpio etc require API CH4 at a minimum. He got a CI4 rated engine oil and that's just fine.

You can even get CK4 rated oil now - the latest standard.

Re: Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later

Finally decided that it was high time to get a new set of tyres. Although the previous set of Bridgestone Duelers was impressive, I wanted to try something different this time. There are so many options in the market that it is actually quite hard to make a choice but after some research, I finally narrowed the options to, Yokohama Geolander and Goodyear Wrangler. However, after seeing a few posts describing the weak sidewall of the Yokohama tyres, I felt Goodyear Wranglers was the safer bet.

Messaged @Nikhilb2008, who informed his team about my requirements. I was in and out of Madhus in 2 hours and this was on a Sunday morning with quite a bit of rush.

MILESTONE UPDATE: After a few highway runs to Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala, the tusker finally hit the 50,000 kilometres mark.

Re: Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later

No significant update. The tusker has been quietly chugging along and munching miles.

Short video log of a trip to the coastal parts of Karnataka(Halebidu, Sringeri, Horanadu, Udupi and Murdeshwar) -

Kilometres since the last service - ~9,000.
Time since the last service - ~7 months.

Ordered the basic items from Amazon and Boodmo
Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later-img_20191018_121507.jpg

Performed a basic paid service at the FNG which included checking/replacing fluids and filters.

Oil and oil filter being replaced -
Mahindra Xylo E4 - 8 years and 40,000 kilometres later-img_20191019_100530.jpg

In just 7 months, the air filter had got completely clogged with dirt. Probably a good representation of the Indian highways and roads. Replaced the air filter and decided that in the future I'll replace it every 6 months/5,000 kilometres.

Well, with that the tusker is all set for another year of adventures.

I did not understand why did buy Cabin Filter and that too 4Nos.?

I am still using the OE Cabin Filter that came alongwith our Xylo that has run 3,36,000+ Kms by justing cleaning t with Soapy Water and Plain Water and drying it in sun.

You are using a mesh or a plastic filter and neither of those are truly efficient for filtering dust out of the aircon and then your noses. You need a paper filter and those do a much more efficient job but are use and throw.

My bad! Those numbers on the excel are incorrect. It is just one each of the air filter and cabin filter.

Any update on the Xylo as I'm in the market for one as a big hauling vehicle at a lower budget amongst others like Scorpio, Storme and a miracle Innova?

Hi Stallion, I have since moved to Canada. The car is with my parents now but doesn't get used as much anymore. It has over 60,000 kilometres on the odometer and doesn't have any major issues.

That being said, for the price you can get a Xylo these days, I think it is a stellar deal especially if you are going to be using the last row seats and/or just want a lot of space.
