Cool pictures AD! That BMW is seeing a lot of outdoor weekends. Its refreshing to see the driving enthusiasm that you and RSUDARSANAN pack. That car and clean bitumen are a drool worthy combination indeed.

Thank you very much megazoid. I think the car brings out the driving enthusiasm. It is almost impossible to keep the car parked during the weekends and not drive it. That would be a tougher test of patience than fasting and dieting that we discussed in the last drive :-)

And by the way, it was great driving with you the other weekend. You red GTI looks sizzling hot and is crazy fast. And driving alongside your car in those hills was a pure joy!

Although I have already written a travelogue on that ( https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/trave...dows-down.html (Chikmagalur: Driving through Coffee Country, with the windows down)), I would still like to share a few photos here for the sake of keeping this thread up to date with all memorable drives.

Below are some pictures of my car and megazoid's GTI in the hills near Chikmagalur:

As you can see in the pictures, the car was quite dirty thanks to all those monsoon drives. Finally I got some time out from the crazy work schedule to get the car cleaned. Unfortunately, my favorite detailing place, Feynlab HSR Layout, closed down recently. But thanks to @robimahanta for finding another place nearby (Express Car Wash) that is quite good too.

So today got my car washed at Express Car Wash:

Getting a good wash after almost a month and a few monsoon drives in the hills:

Clean, after a long time and about 1000km of driving:

As someone had pointed out and as was visible in few recent pictures, the 'd' in the 320d had fallen down. Luckily, I had the fallen letter with me.

So took this opportunity to get it fixed by a 3M double sided tape immediately after the car wash:

Well, that's it for now. Now I have got a clean car, and a weekend ahead. Will surely try to find an opportunity to make it dirty again. :-)

Happy to share that the streak of weekend drives with friends continues, this time thanks to our friend and bhpian KarthikK. However, I did not have to wait for this drive for the car to get dirty. It rained soon after I got the car washed (Murphy's Law), and the car got dirty again even before this drive!

KarthikK knows many great drives and locations around Bangalore, and he called a few friends for one such drive/ride on Sunday morning. Three cars and three bikes (including KarthikK's Ninja 1000) joined for a short drive to a nearby location, a quick photoshoot and then some breakfast at a highway restaurant.

Let me go straight to the pictures.

My car accompanied by Zebo's vRS and PraveenBalan's Octavia 1.8 TSi:

Thank you. This is the backwaters of Markonahalli Dam. The dam itself is a tourist place (and you will find that in the Google Maps). However, nearby the dam there are many nice locations like this.

Thank you Deepak. Yes, it was nice catching up. And thank you for the compliment on the car picture! It means a lot coming from you.

We still have that photoshoot with your Blue A3 pending. It is amazing that in so many meetings we still did not get the Blue A3 and the Red 3-series together for a photo :-)

This makes me so happy! During this nationwide lockdown and restrictions, nothing beats open roads and some one-on-one time with the machines. All of them look amazing, and so do all of you. Not a lot has been spoken about how mental health improves with some scenic drives and photos with our beloved machines and friends. Wish all of you more smiles and miles.

Also, that Multistrada in that shade of white looks beaut!

re: Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!

With the weather still reminding us of the monsoon and the occasional heavy rains still lingering around, it was time for yet another drive through the countryside, enjoying the lovely weather last weekend. This was another drive with "WindowsDownMotoring" group, and it turned out to be another very memorable drive. We had a great company, absolutely scenic locations, some fantastic roads, and some lovely photoshoot opportunities.

This weekend is well documented by Graaja in this travelogue: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/trave...e-shimoga.html (Holiges, a Coracle and a Banyan Tree - Weekend Drive to Shimoga)

Leaving the group photos and the convoy photos for that travelogue, I thought I should share some solo photos of my car here, to keep this thread up to date.

On an open grassland where the group had breakfast:

re: Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!

A day drive to Horsley Hills, Andhra Pradesh:

I did several group drives recently, as updated in the previous few posts. However, I had not done any solo drive since January, and I was missing that experience. I love solo drives for the sense of freedom and some quality alone time for reflection and introspection that they provide. It had been a long time and I really needed some nice solo drive.

This Sunday I got some free time and decided on an impromptu solo drive to Horsley Hills, AP. This is about 150km from Bangalore, but with mostly rural roads and traffic, it takes about 3 hours to reach there. From my home, Google maps showed about 3 hours and 30 minutes, and it did indeed take me almost that much time each way.

The road experience was a mixed bag; some good roads, about 10km of absolutely terrible roads with huge potholes and missing tarmac, and then some fantastic roads with a lovely ghat section leading to Horsley Hills.

Luckily, I got some good photoshoot opportunities on the way. Let the pictures do the talking now.

A lovely rural road after I exited the NH section:
Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!-img_20201122_1140502.jpg

It was hot and sunny. For a change, I enjoyed the sunny conditions after a few recent drives where rain was a constant companion:
Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!-img_20201122_114146.jpg

I love these single lane roads when they are smooth like this:
Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!-img_20201122_1143022.jpg

A parting photo at that spot where I spent some time enjoying the location and the weather:
Red-Hot BMW: Story of my pre-owned BMW 320d Sport Line (F30 LCI). EDIT: 90,000 kms up!-img_20201122_114331.jpg

Although the road in the above photos looks enticing, it was a joy short lived. After a few more kilometers of good road like the above, I soon reached some horrible roads. For about 10km immediately after entering AP, the roads was full of potholes, with totally missing road surface at many spots. On top of that, there were several large, fully loaded trucks trying to maneuver those potholes, and even those trucks were struggling. I had to be very careful with the 320d, and I wished I had taken my SX4 instead.

Luckily, I crossed the bad section without much issues (other than slow progress and a few layers of dust on the car). As I reached close to Horsley Hills, the roads became absolutely fantastic! If earlier I had any regrets about taking the BMW instead of the SX4, those regrets disappeared once I started climbing the ghat to Horsley Hills. In fact I was now glad I got the BMW and I enjoyed the car to bits while climbing up the ghats.

Lovely roads like these in the ghat leading to Horsley Hills:

Could not resist taking several photos at this spot:

The road was lined with lovely thick trees providing cool shade in that hot weather:

The car seemed to love this location more than I did, and wanted to spend some more time here. But I decided to move on as it was supposed to be a quick drive:

By now surprisingly there were a few clouds in the sky, but not surprisingly, there were many people at this view point:

After a quick lunch at the AP Tourism Department restaurant there, I started my drive back immediately. The lunch there was a simple fare with rice, sambar, rassam, and a few vegetables.

The views from the road while descending the ghat:

One corner that I really loved. These were the moments that made me happy that I drove the BMW there and not the SX4. The car was lovely around these corners and I thoroughly enjoyed it driving up and down these turns. Totally worth a day's drive:

Thank you for another nice travelogue, Doc. I hope you really pushed her on the well-paved sections. You inspire me to start planning for an F30/G20.

Thank you very much!

Yes, I did push her well on the ghat roads, but not to any risky extent. This car can be enjoyed at decent speeds too. It begs you to push even harder, but I kept the speeds within sane limits and enjoyed it nevertheless.

The G20 is a major improvement over F30 in many ways. So that is the one you should get now if you are looking for a 3-series. Unless of course you get an offer on a good used F30 :-)

Service Update, Drive to Mumbai and 50,000km up!

According to the Condition Based Servicing (CBS), the oil change was due by end of November 2020. I still had 800km more on the old oil as per the km, but the time limit came before the km limit, and I got the oil change done at Navnit Motors as per schedule. This was my first oil change after BSI expired. The total bill came to about Rs. 22,000 for oil change as well as well new oil and air filters.

One minor irritant that has developed in last couple of months is that sometimes there is a minor but irritating rattling sound from the rear of the car. This is not always there, and sometimes mysteriously disappears. I could not show it to the Service Advisor during the oil change service because that day this sound disappeared! The car was totally quiet and perfect that day. The SA could not do much in that case.

Anyways, with the servicing done, it was time for a long drive. I had not been to Pune and Mumbai since March (due to obvious reasons), and it was time for me to visit my colleagues and business partners there. It was essentially a business trip.

Completed this drive last week, and as expected, the car was a perfect companion on this drive. It is amazing how good a highway cruiser this car is. The drives were smooth and fast without any tiredness as such. One thing that really helps on such long highway drives is the range on a full tank. I could easily do 600km to 700km on a tank before thinking about refueling. In fact, in about 2200km of the round trip, I refueled exactly thrice.

As I mentioned, this was purely a business trip and I did not have much time to get down and take photos on the way. Nor was this a scenic drive worthy of photography. But nevertheless, let me share some photos anyway.

It was a cold and foggy start from Bangalore:

Early morning dew on the car in Pune. The hotel gave me a premium parking and placed cones to make sure other cars don't park too close. Nice of them :-)

Overall enjoyed the drive and the car for sure! However, the aforementioned minor rattle came back on a few times on this drive, and now I need to go back to get that fixed. Hopefully this time I will be able to show it to the Service Advisor. It is a not a major issue or a big rattle at all, but needs to be fixed nonetheless.

Check if the rattle happens when you accelerate. I had a similar issue in my F34 and it was because of a broken fastener that holds the hand brake cable. When this fastener breaks, the hand brake cable sometimes touches the drive shaft. This happens only on hard acceleration where the G force forces the hand brake cable to flex and touch the drive shaft. The rattle does not exist when you accelerate smoothly or at constant speeds.

At the time I had taken the car to check this, the SA mentioned that this problem is also common in F30. They have sourced a new fastener and will fix it during the next oil service for my car. Right now, it is held by a tie.

Thank you very much Graaja for this information. Actually the rattle is not related to acceleration. Sometimes it happens (especially on bad roads) even when I am coasting. In fact, on smooth roads, there is no rattle at all even when I accelerate or do any other maneuvers. This rattle comes only on bad roads.

However, I will mention this point to SA when I go there next, and ask them to double check this. In fact, I feel this started from my last brake pad change (which was about 2 months ago), and thus, could be somehow related to the brakes. Thanks for your tip. I will get this checked.

I'm facing a very, very similar issue in my ride. It's an annoying rattle from the rear right hand side that is only slightly apparent over rough roads, and not on smooth tarmac at all.

Amazingly, it seems to have popped up for me too when I changed rear pads about 2 months, now that I think about it. It wasn't there before that. I was a bit stumped about it myself, but this does light a few bulbs in my head. Let me know what the service advisor says, could be a similar thing for me.
