Welcome to the club.
First thing you need to do is get the AT gearbox oil changed. Do it twice with a gap of 4-6 months or 3000 kms. Changing all other fluids will not hurt.
Particularly the rear differential oil. This is because MASS people are not used to a rear differential car and forget it. Also the front differential drain plug is difficult to access and many a times they give that change a miss also.

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Thank you Sridhar,

Happened to change all fluids halfway (At friends service centre) while driving from Bubhaneshwar to Bangalore except for AT gearbox oil, this was not readily available.
Just curies to know why gearbox oil has to be changed twice in such a short interval.

Thanks for the tip, sure appreciate your inputs.

My mechanic in Bangalore has recommended me to changes these (Lower Arms, Steering ball joints, Tie rod ends, Front link rod, Struts bar bush) parts, this has become tricky I am trying to source them.

As per the owner's manual AT oil is to be replaced every 1,50,000 kms. But, based on my experience with the GV and my Santro AT, I would say that changing the oil every 80k kms is a must. Oil grade is SUZUKI ATF3317 or MOBIL ATF 3309. You need 3 litres per oil change.

The reason I say you need to change the oil twice is as follows:
There is a lot of oil in the torque convertor. That does not get drained when you empty the pan using the drain plug. So repeating the change after a few months sort of ensures that most of the muck is drained out.
You can do a tissue paper test using the AT oil dipstick to get an idea of how dirty the oil is. Ideally there should be no debris residue on the paper. If you get a lot of blackish debris it is a sure sign that your oil needs changing.
The gearbox showing jerking when shifting gears also indicates you need to change oil. The jerking normally occurs when shifting from 1 to 2 on the upshifts. And 4-3 or 3-2 on the downshifts. If after the double oil change some jerking remains you may add an additive to the oil. I have reported on my experience in this thread.
https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The change of suspension parts is par for the course. It needs to be done at around 80K.

For those who need to change the front struts please note that the following parts should also be changed with the struts:
#6 Bearing Front Strut 41741-78K00
#7 Support Front Strut 41810-78K00(found out this the hard way. my reports & pictures will be up tomorrow)
#15 - Seat Coil Spring 41211-65J00 (otherwise the strut assly. will squeak while turning the wheels)

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Dear GV experts please help this noob. I have been eyeing a GV since last 2 years and finally one (terrible exterior) is within reach in BLR. I expect to do the MASS visit once the lock down is lifted.

Going by the pictures alone, she will need a reset of paint, wheels and tyres. What is a fair price given i cant find more info currently.

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Another Year , another snow drive to the lower Himalayas .

The mileage went up after I got the clutch changed , the water pump was making a weird noise , so got a new one as well . Lead time for parts has increased lately , the pump took 8 days to be delivered to the MASS.

Last year after picking up the CRV and BMW , and after 12 years of owning GV's - I decided to let this one go as well , a dear friend has bought it , however still parked with me as the new owner lives abroad 10 months a year and is only expected in August 20 , when I indicated that I was looking to let it go he paid in full and said keep it for me even if I drive it after a year
Has been used for less than a 1500kms in the last 6 months on account of the automatic CRV for in town and the 320 for highways being there.

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Hi Guys ,

Need help with my GV.

1) Strut replacement due to a bent when I hit a divider & the tyre busted. it has got a bent & would need replacement ( Post from Sridhar-v Sir ) clarifies on what needs to be done.

2) Clutch replacement. The vehicle struggles to pull on basic inclines of even a parking lot . & needs regular downshift & throttle.
( query - I have ordered parts from a vendor in Delhi Mr. Bedi - he deals only in clutch assemblies & suggested me to go with LUK brand which he had, gave the part numbers & he agreed to deliver, my worry is he has quoted as below

Clutch & pressure plate :-5500
Release bearing:- 1600
Total of 7100.

The other vendor quoted:- 16000 for all the three ( Daikin Japan parts )

I am just not sure whether 7100 GV clutch would sustain & will it be genuine.

The person is giving COD & warranty for a year on the product.

3) AC not working on idle. ( topped up the gas & still issue persists ) - the compressor keeps on tripping on idle, but when in motion the cooling is awesome.

I showed it to a couple of guys, they were interested in charging me for gas.
one guy said its something to do with mechanical as when the RPM goes high, the cooling is brilliant.

The compressor keeps tripping on idle, what possible part apart from the clutch can be a reason ( anything to do with the idling part of the vehicle )

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Please only replace with original SGP clutch parts . The SGP replacements will take you through another 100,000kms if you are a careful user. My understanding also is the LUK comes for the Vitara XL7 and the price quoted will be the ballpark figure for that vehicle.

The AC would also trip if the car is overheating at Idle , or if the radiator is choked restricting airflow , take it to one of those places which are conversant with the GV and they will fix it for you , pretty basic stuff for GV experts .

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Dad went ahead and bought a 2009 Grand Vitara 2.4 Auto (with 84k on odo, proper service records, new tyres, brake pads and discs) as a partial replacement for his 2.6 lakh run Punto MJD. The drive back home (mix of four-lane and two-lane highways with typical Kerala traffic) yielded 10kmpl average over 160+ kms, which I consider good.

We have been passively looking for a Grand Vitara 2.4 for last few years. Only 3 had popped up for sale on OLX Kerala ; one was picked up by our friendly mod Jaggu. I must admit that I've gone through this very thread (the bible for Grand Vitara owners) and the 2.0 versus 2.4 thread multiple times over the years. Thank you Samurai, sridhar-v, sudev, Jaggu, vigsom, Styler, etc for their regular updates

Radio antenna rod replacement :

Removed it and cross-checked with neighbor's new Baleno. Both are the same and can be swapped. Grand Vitara (Rs 519 | Part no : 3925164J00) versus Baleno (Rs 156 | Part no : 39251M74L00)

The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP-img_20200526_11153501.jpeg

Minor issues that need attention :

- Replace missing roof rail caps (Part no : 7821965J105PK)

- Replace hood silencer/insulation/pad (Part no : 7527065J00)

- Headlights do not look good as they've faded slightly. A friend suggested getting them restored by Reflectionz Car Care, Aluva, Kerala. They do exceptional work at reasonable rates.

- Doors do not open/close in stages. Will replace the door stoppers with Swift/Dzire ones as they're much cheaper and readily available (thank you Styler for the heads-up).

- Previous owner had removed the tyre cover citing minor rattling. Wondering if we should fit it back or get a cover made by a nearby small scale bag manufacturer.

Dropped the car at nearby MASS for adjusting the handbrake, replacement of rear brake and reverse light, front log lamp and to fix minor issues.

Congrats, Klub Class. The car looks good and interiors prove it's been maintained very well. This car ages very well and should serve well for many more years. It is good that parts can be swapped with other cars from Maruti. Enjoy many more miles on this car.

Congrats! Scoring a 2.4L GV is indeed a coup.

Meanwhile, I have been separated from my GV for almost 3 months now. It is sitting in a basement parking in my Udupi apartment while I am stuck in Bangalore. Visiting Udupi would get me quarantined, because of a very zealous district collector who is treating even in-state travelers as out-of-state travelers.

What are the problems I am looking at when I finally access it after 3-4 months? I assume the battery will be gone for good since it is almost 5 years old. What about tyres and fluids?

Congratulations on your Grand Vitara 2.4. It looks really clean. A lot of parts are common with other Suzuki vehicles.

1. I did this antenna change with the Baleno one in 2017; it is nice to have some common parts that can be swapped.

2. For front doors, try the stoppers of the old Santro/ Xing. They are stronger.

3. Do not bother about the spare wheel cover. The look with the cover off is much much better.

Remove the battery, charge it on slow charge over, say 16 hours and refit. Do the throttle body calibration as always. ( ignition on - pedal to metal - 10 secs - ignition off - few secs - pedal up - wait 2 mins)

Tyres would have developed a flat spot - one short drive and they'll be fine. You could check the tyre pressure. If you're on N2, the drop would be no more than 2psi; on air, a little more.

Fluids - no worry. They'll all be fine. Yes, if engine oil was anyway due for a change having run 10k kms, you could just have it replaced.

And as happy I should be seeing a 2.4 GV, in this case equally sad, was in talks with this guy for a week & LOCKDOWN didn't permit the travel. the only crisp GV of my last 6-month hunt I could find was taken away, but extremely happy to see a fellow member laying hands onto it. ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS ONE AWESOME FIND :(

Congratulations! the car seems to be in good nick! Get a full change of fluids done, especially the transmission oil. It is slightly expensive but must-do for the life of automatic transmission. Pretty sure it would never have been replaced after the factory fill.

If you are lucky battery also would be fine after an overnight charge, if not replace. As far as rest of the car, just do a normal 5000 kms service done. Since your car was maintained regularly, nothing much have gone bad. Tyres, if they are under 2-3 years old, should also be ok after a couple of kms.

re: The First Grand Vitara on Team-BHP [14 years & 150000kms]

Thanks everyone for your wishes, suggestions and tips!

It's been one month since Grand Vitara came home (did close to 500 km). Car averaged 8.35 kmpl (tankful to tankful method) over 341 km (with AC on always and mostly city driving). We took the car to MASS for general service (including oil change) and few part replacements. Also got 3M underbody coating done (2 years warranty and 4 free inspections).

Part Replacements :

1) Engine hood insulation : Part No: 7527065J01 instead of 7527065J00 mentioned in my last post. Though MASS had placed an order for the latter (as it's cheaper), the part wasn't available and they sent the former part.

2) Parking brake shoe set, parking brake cables and related parts : The packing reveals that the minor parts were packed in 2010 and cables in 2015. New old stock!

3) Contact coil: The steering audio controls were not working and MASS traced the issue to contact coil. They suggested replacement, Part no: 3748062J00 Rs 4890. Learnt from Boodmo that the part is shared with other Maruti cars. Replaced it with Part no 37480M76M10 (Rs 1124) and the issue is resolved.

4) Front wipers: Valeo 19 inch frameless from Boodmo (Rs 242 per piece)

5) Rear Wipers : Replaced the rubber strip using a new 12 inch Bosch wiper.

6) Bulbs (reverse lamp and brake light). We carried the bulbs from outside as they were not in stock at MASS.

7) Cabin Filter : Ordered two JS Asakashi Cabin Filters for Rs 360 per piece from a UAE based seller on Boodmo when they were offering free delivery offer for all filters. The cabin filters were delivered in two weeks. Now, they've increased the price to Rs 700. (Maruti OE cabin filter costs Rs 1481)

And the end result :

Pending works :

1) Front right door stopper replacement (Swift Dzire's stopper wasn't in stock, MASS will replace it at home)

2) The right rear door speaker is faulty and needs replacement.

3) Headlight restoration and exterior detailing.

4) ATF change during the next service. (tissue paper test using ATF dipstick showed no residues, so decided to get it changed next time)

A quick query : Does Grand Vitara have alarm siren? Ours doesn't make a beep on locking or unlocking
