I will have to check the bills for exact prices. But the Timing belt costed around 3-4k and Suspension job was close to 20k, this included one shock absorber, tie end joints and Rubber parts.

I checked up with the Bangalore ASC and a private garage in Chennai. Both of them quoted around 8k-9k for timing belt+tensioner for Elantra Crdi. Labor charges etc.;
Does your 3-4k cost include tensioner as well?

Compared to Verna/Getz, some parts are really cheap. Fuel filter of Verna is around Rs 1400/-

Timing belt of Verna/Getz also costs a bomb, i'm told.

My Uncle had an Embera CRDi, the cost of of maintenance was similar to Verna and Getz CRDi, Just like the Elantra.

First few batches of Verna came with a cheaper Diesel filter but due to complaints of excessive smoking it was changed to a more complex unit that costs more.

Just to compare costs between the spares:

Suspension Arm- Rs.4614
Shock absorber- Rs.3414
Air filter- Rs.403
Oil Filter- Rs.396
Diesel filter- Rs.858
Brake Pads Front- Rs.3326
Brake pads rear- Rs.1762
Timing Belt- Rs.3402
Engine Drivebelt- Rs.3612

And also the Service Adviser clearly stated that "the rubbers and bushes cannot be changed alone as their fitting will never be as precise as the way it is on the complete part."

Yes, that would be very helpful. There seems to be quite a bit of an increase in timing & drive belt costs off-late.

AC Trouble

Last week the AC stopped working. My car was with Dad, he got the Car AC checked at a Local AC mechanic in Dabwali (This place does not have a Hyundai Service station), the fault was traced to AC compressor clutch.

The car was later taken to Hyundai workshop in Hisar. The mechanic even without a proper check-up declared the Compressor to be dead, the Estimate for repair was quoted Rs.35000+ Labor+ Taxes.

I got the car back to Gurgaon to my Trusted Hyundai workshop, the check-up revealed only clutch and coil were damaged, after replacement the AC is working great again.

Cost- 12K for Clutch + Coil + Gas+ Oil + Labour + Tax

Lesson Learnt: Always take a alternate advice before saying yes for an expensive job. In my case i managed to save over 30k.

The Car was accepted without appointment, All parts were readily available, the car was delivered on the same day. I am sure if it would have been my Punto, i might had to wait for weeks if not months for this same job. Thanks to Hyundai for stocking parts of a discontinued car that did not sell in volumes.

OT: Mercury touched 48 degrees in Hisar.

Going to see an Elantra today. Talked to the owner on the phone. Says its a 2006 car with 40,000km on the odo. He's quoting 5.5L but that's Bangy for you.

Any tips on what to check for, as I've never bought a used car, yet? Also, any price recommendations?

Did you check the car, Please update. Please get the car checked at a Hyundai workshop before finalising the deal, also get the service record checked there.

This thread contains some good info on the Elantra crdi, so thought I'd post a query here.
I've recently purchased a used 2005 Elantra crdi with 65k on the clock. Got it checked at Hyundai, saw the service history... car was clean and got a green signal from the a.s.c. So, went for it.

I've driven it a couple of days and the following issues have surfaced:
- Idle rpm seems to be a little low at around 900. What is the normal idle rpm?
If 900 is low, how can this be fixed?
- Clutch seems to have a question mark around it: While revving past 3k rpm, it feels like the revs sort of 'slip' before going past 3k. That is, the car revs smoothly up to 3k, then drops/slips back to around 2800, before going past 3000.
- Smell: after a good bit of bumper to bumper driving or spirited driving there is a rotten eggs kind of stink. I am told this is a sign of clutch problem - is this true?

Something tells me the clutch might be the common link here. It wasn't changed in the last 5 years of ownership as per the service records.
