Hi Hurricane! Toyotas have a very reasonable cost of maintenance as you will see from a Detailed Analysis Report below.

Meanwhile i am writing a Detailed Cost Analysis Report on the Service and Maintenance Cost of Obelix so far.

As mentioned in my previous report Obelix completed 80,000 kms in 3 years of Ownership on 23rd January 2013.

It has been a trouble free and delightful three years of Ownership. Obelix has been to highways ,deserts, mountain passes and deep jungles with a smile on its face and a skip in its step. No niggles no breakdowns.

This is in part due to the wonderful aftersales service and maintainence provided by Toyota which comes at a reasonable cost also.

It was to this end I decided to calculate exactly how much i have spent on Service and Maintainence of the Fortuner in these 3 years and 80,000 kms.

The figures are all given here:

Date of Report: 1st February 2013

Total Time of Ownership so far: 3 years 1 month and 22 days.

The total spent in the First year when the car ran 20,000 kms was Rs. 5,707/- @ Rs.0.30 per Km

The Second year the Obelix ran another 20,000 kms and the amount spent was Rs.14,319/- @ Rs.0.70 per Km

In its Third Year Obelix covered 35,000 kms and the amount spent was Rs. 26,935/- @ Rs. 0.76 per Km

Since then it has covered 5000 kms and the amount spent has been Rs.6865 @ Rs.1.38 per Km

This shows us that the total spent so far on service and maintainence of the vehicle at 80,000 kms run in these 3 years 1 Month and 22 days is Rs. 53826/- @ Rs.0.67 per Km

I have not included cost of Tyres and replacements like Wing mirrors (which were stolen twice!!) in this report.

Therefore the figures tell us that the average cost of maintainence has been Rs.0.67 per Kilometer which is very reasonable.

Slightly , I want to know how you calculated the Cost of ownership .Is it the (Number of kms done/ (Fuel+service+tyres) costs) or (Number of kms done/ (service+tyres) costs)

As per my calculations for Maintenance Cost per KM = Total Service Expenses/Total KMs run till the date of calculation.

Total Service Expenses = ASC costs for all services + wheel balancing & alignment charges carried out outside + washing done outside + all charges for the upkeep of the vehicle including charges paid to GDW, items purchased for upkeep like all the pills and potions, cloth etc+ charges spent on tyre repairs+ and everything else (however minor).

Total Cost Per KM = Service costs + Fuel+ Insurance + Major expenses (tyres/battery etc)+ minor expenses (toll etc)/KMs Completed.

I have no major worries calculating the above (however complex it be) as I will be outsourcing the task to M/S Manuuj & Co. c/o Obelix.

In this report the total Amount spent on servicing the car is divided by 80,000 which is the total kilometers run so far.

This only included cost of Service as i am giving the VEHICLE AVERAGE MAINTAINENCE COST over the last three years not the Total cost of Ownership.

This shows us that the total spent so far on service and maintainence of the vehicle at 80,000 kms run in these 3 years 1 Month and 22 days is Rs. 53826/-.

Rs. 53826(divided by) 80,000 (kms)= Rs.0.67 per Km Maintainence cost.

I figured that the cost of Running the car comes to about Rs.5/km
0.70 for servicing+0.5 for tyres (replaced at 72,000 kms at a cost of 40k) and 3.75 for fuel (average FE 12 kmpl@ Rs. 45/litre)

Other expenses such as Toll tax, Insurance, Cleaning apparatus (polish, shampoo, cloth etc), Accessories, Challans, Salary paid to Cleaner, Interest paid to bank, Depreciation deduction claimed shall give the TOTAL COST of OWNERSHIP.

I am satisfied with just calculating the Service and Total Running Cost Figures

The BPO operation shall be up and running soon and awaits Admirals business.

Why are 60K & 70K comparatively higher than rest of the services. I understand 5K services do NOT cost much. I could consider 60K as a major service, but the 70K & 80K feels more than what it should be.

Sorry, I might be digging a bit old thoughts, would really love to know.

Just Rs 6865 for 80k Service? I guess that is very cheap for a vehicle of this class.

Toyota are not expensive to buy in my honest opinion. When you consider the level of Engineering and Quality that goes into each Toyota product you realize its a very reasonable price to pay indeed. A similar product from another manufacturer may be cheaper but will also then be lower in Quality and not as reliable.

In the long run these "cheaper" alternatives turn out to be much more expensive due to frequent replacement of broken parts which pushes up maintainence costs. This also negatively affects their resale value.

What "extra" you think you are paying for a Toyota when you purchase it, you easily make back due to its strong resale value. I bought a Qualis 10 years ago. After such a long time most vehicles give up the ghost. The Qualis is running very very well and has lost only 30% of its value. I bought it for a little over 6 Lacs and can easily sell it for 3.5 any day of the week.

The cheap cost of maintainence due to good quality well engineered parts that do not require frequent replacement are the cherry on the cake.

So in my opinion Toyota's are not an expensive buy at all.

All the information is there just a few pages back. But to save you the trouble here are the answers you are looking for

Post no.#317: 60,000 kms Service on 13th July 2012 @ Rs.9817/-
The cost of this service was Rs.9817/- due to the fact that all three wipers were replaced for the first time since the monsoons were looming. They pushed up the cost of service by Rs.3000/-.
The brake system (Pads, Discs, Drums) were also checked thoroughly which pushed up the labor cost a bit that day.

Without these the service would have cost within the normal Rs.5000/- range for a 10,000 kms Service.

Post no.#336: 70,000 kms Service 4th September 2012 @ Rs.8605/-
The Cost of the 70,000 kms service was higher than usual as the Brake Pads were replaced for the first time in Obelix.
The Brake Pads cost Rs 4472/- and accounted for half of the Rs.8605/- Invoice amount.

Without this the Service would have again come in under Rs.5000/-

^ IMO Great Driving habits (Infact intelligent driving) & more than the tires for the brake pads truly commendable.

The clutch plate on the Qualis was changed at 1,50,000 kms so i expect Obelix's clutch to last atleast past the 100,000 kms mark.

After a satisfactory 80,000 kms Service was completed and reports submitted I decided to give the interiors of Obelix a once over with some Leather Polish, Plastic and Trim stain remover so that the interiors can look fresh and new.

The past three years of use are not showing on the vehicle and the interiors seem to be very hard wearing.

While cleaning the carpet area just behind the front seats I found this Plastic Clip type part lying there.



I guess it may have come off while the 'Vanar Sena' at Galaxy Toyota were furiously cleaning the Obelix's innards. Try as much as I did I could not find the slot where this Plastic Clip would insert back into.

If any of you can identify the the part and its resting place for me I would be grateful. I abhor the idea of some part that needs to be held down having free rein inside poor Obelix.

Look forward to seeing who solves this mystery..

Hi Manuuj,
The first reaction to the clip - you don't have a pony tail I suppose ?
Second reaction - If you ask me I don't think it is anything from Obelix - could be a foreign object is my feeling. Could be a clip from one of the cleaning crew's handy items. Could be from the vacuum cleaner or something.
Third reaction - If you could just wait till Sunday - will nose around the Admiral's cabin and give you the final verdict.
My only suspicion, if at all it is from the cabin - a piece from under the seat. But very doubtful.

That clip is attached to the seat rails. It's for the front seat rails. It should either be fitted on the front of the rail or at the rear. If it's at the rear, just slide the seat forward and look closely at the rail.

The clip's main purpose is to prevent your leg from scraping the exposed metal rail. It attaches onto the end of the rail.
