The oil seems to be very expensive, why not use Honda's own synthetic oil at half the price?

Honda uses Idemitsu/Savsol 0W30 at about 850+Taxes per litre). Did not feel comfortable with it. May do so next time.

Sgiitk, the oil filter is dirt cheap at 187 bucks. On the other hand, find a better source for the Mobil 1. It's easy to buy 4 liters for 3.2 - 3.4 K in Mumbai.

Thanks GTO. I have one reliable known dealer in Kanpur for Helix 5W40, but none that I know for Mobil1. So get my lubes from Gwalior where the dealer is known to us for the past 30+ years. I will look around next time. Sticker price for Mobil1 is 4600!

Tell me about it, they have continuously raised the MRP year on year. Something that might help you with bargaining in the future : Dealers usually get Mobil 1 for 600 odd per liter from the distributor. Costing for the smaller dealers is about 650, while the larger ones can even get a liter anywhere between 550 - 600.

Received some PMs asking for additional information on this post. Here goes:

Costing for smaller dealers : 650 (minimum) - 700 (tops)
Costing for larger dealers : 600 averaged.

Costing for service stations : You won't believe it....Rs. 300 - 400 (anywhere between). How? They buy by the barrel. A 200L barrel of Mobil 1 will cost them between Rs. 60,000 - 80,000. While their purchase price is by the barrel, they sell at the MRP (about 1,100 odd / liter currently). That's 800 bucks net profit margin per liter.

Thanks GTO, I will try harder next time round, and see what discount I can get. Also, it was not loose but a 4l can. So some difference may be on that account.

Considering, I may not be doing much more that 6000 a year we are looking at the middle of the next year.

You already changed to Synthetic? My SA was telling that it is advisable to change after about 10k of mileage. I changed my oil with regular oil costing about Rs850 altogether. My car has run about 8000 kms by now. plan to change to Helix during next service. Did you feel any difference after changing to synth?

@vasoo; The original fill was a synth (0W30 I presume). So decided to stick with synth. I debated for a long time, and finally took the plunge. I do not expect to hit 10,000 by the end of next year.

With the engine still running in (had done 2509 before the service) it is difficult to attribute between the oil and the running in. The engine is surely peppier and smoother now - but due to what, I cannot commit. See I had driven in from Gwalior (320km via Jhansi) in the evening, and took the car in for service the next morning.

Any particular reason why you have opted for 3 services already despite having covered only 2505 km?

Does Honda specify service at 1/6/12 months or is it 1/12 for the Civic?

3 months? Isn't that a total rip-off by Honda then? Toyota recommends 1/12/24 for the Altis. I wonder why it should be any different for the Civic.

Free service is at 1/3/6 for Hondas...and then every 6 months paid service.

I have no crib with 1/3/6 since the charges are Zero, except for the oil filter at 6.

Now it is 5000/6months with oil change at 10000/12 months with synthetic. I have often criticised Honda for their crazy (read over conservative) service schedules, and once I am out of warranty I will be on 10000/12 months only.

Are you saying that after buying a new car, you have to take your car for the first service only after 12 months?
