My Beige Boy-i20 ASTA CRDi 6 Speed
Hello all. I took the delivery of my brand new i20 CRDI ASTA 6 speed manual yesterday. Want to share my happiness with TBHP family and also pen down my thoughts and feelings. So here I go. Fasten your seat belts!
Why new car?
We owned a 2003 Santro Xing XS. Wonderful car. Very good value for money. Served us faithfully without a hitch in its 6 and half years of spirited service. While it is simply awesome within the city, it was a bit of let down on the highways. Didn’t feel so confident cruising at 100 kmph on highways and cornering at 80 plus speeds on highways. At the start of 2010 my father started to think about buying a new car. Our budget was around 7.5 lakhs and it had to be a hatch (Parking constraints in my house). So the hunt started for a car that could replace our faithful santro. And it had to be a diesel.
What car?
As usual when ever a hunt for new car starts confusions and dilemmas start h(a)unting us. We were also no exception. Started reading reviews on TBHP and was hooked to it day and night. The contenders were
I20
Swift DDIS
Punto
Polo
Figo
First took the test drive of Figo diesel. Felt very comfy. The seat fabric is very good (might I say best in the class?).The engine is peppy. Took it on a spin on kanakpura road in Bangalore. Was impressed by the in-city ride. But somehow on highway felt it underpowered. May be because the test car had just around 1000 kms on the ODO and hadn’t opened up well. But still. My mother didn’t like the ingress and egress. Also the rear leg room felt cramped. So out went Figo.
Next we took the test drive of Punto. Felt good. But the Interiors looked cheap and the fit and finish was not satisfactory. The car handling is awesome. Felt very stable at high speeds. However again the rear bench was a let down. Also my father was a bit skeptical about the TATA FIAT service. That was the main reason for us to drop Punto.
Swift. Didn’t take any test drive. The looks felt outdated. I personally didn’t like the swift looks. So the swift goes too.
Polo. Very good car. But the waiting period of 5 months put us off. Curtains down for polo too.
Then we took the i20 CRDI test drive. And boy, it blew us off. The interiors are a class apart and will put the sub 10 lakh sedans to shame. Interiors are very airy and the view at front is very good. The fit and finish is just top notch. The engine felt really good and refined compared to Figo and Punto. Just loved the turbo punch above 2k RPM. The rear leg space is also very good. The height adjustable seat, the center console, electrically foldable mirrors and flip keys were liked very much by my father. I too was smitten by its looks .It got a 5* from my mother too. So finally the i20 was selected to be our new hatch.
Dealership experiences
We did all our interactions with BLUE Hyundai showroom, Bangalore. The experience was not anything great to talk about. Just average. The sales advisor (SA) was totally unknowledgeable and didn’t know anything except the basics of the car. But she promptly arranged test drives for us. The OTR came to 8.48 lakh for the ASTA model so we had to stretch out budget. Our good old Santro went for 1.95 lakhs. Is it a good price for a very well maintained 6.5 year old Santro? Now started the color dilemma. I wanted the dark metallic grey, my father wanted berry red but mother was bent upon silky beige. According to her it gives the car a classy and executive look and she was right too. So we booked it in the silky beige color. I think i am one of the very few people having the beige color on i20.We booked the car on 16th may .Didn’t get much freebies except the standard mud flaps, mats, idol, perfume. The dealer promised delivery in two weeks. But due to strikes in the factory and maintenance shutdown the delivery got delayed and finally our car arrived on 24th to the dealer. Did a quick PDI and were told it will be ready with registration in 2 days. Went to the dealer yesterday evening armed the TBHP PDI. Everything went alright. Then it was Lights, camera, action! Later we drove home.
Short drive
We took the beige boy on a spin today on Mysore road, road, NICE road and Kanakapura road. The 6th gear is a boon for highways. It hits 110 kmph at 2K RPM. Just the beginning of the turbo sweet spot. Tap the accelerator and u will feel as if the engine has got a shot of adrenaline and it lunges forward like a untamed bull. I was grinning from ear to ear. Could manage 130 kmph on NICE road. The gear shift indicator is pretty accurate and will tell you when to shift up or down based on the load and RPM. The steering is light at slow speeds but weighs up pretty well at high speeds. The rear ride is a bit bumpy but nevertheless comfortable. It tackles the bumps pretty well. And ah the ABS with EBD and 4 discs are awesome. Wanted to test their working and hit the brakes hard at 50 kmph on the exit of NICE road after making sure no one is behind. The ABS kicked in, I felt the brake pedal pulse and modulate the pressure to prevent the wheels from locking. And it stopped in a straight line. Thumbs up for braking.
Haven’t had the opportunities to test the controversial AC yet. Will do it soon. Here are the pics. Will be posting few more interior pics soon. If you want any pic in particular let me know.
