Quite a lot of updates coming up :)

First in line was egr cleaning and change of coolant. Egr was never cleaned before and coolant I lost track on when it was last changed.

Both tasks were completed at home yesterday. The removal of egr valve was time consuming and labour intensive. This task alone took over 3 hrs from removing to refitting after cleaning

I have a few questions-

1) How much did you pay for the EGR cleaning?
2) Do you see a difference in the performance/ smoke emitted post the cleaning?
3) Would you recommend this to others.

Thanks.

I did the egr cleaning at home along with few other works on my 1100 and Linea. Don't have the split up cost. But I think FASS charges around 1500 for the same.

Yes, there is a mild difference in pick-up while a lot of difference in regard to smoke which has gone down a lot.

I would recommend getting it done at 55-60k kms initially and maybe every 30k kms after that.

Did the mechanic check the relay? Inter-change with the horn relay and see.

Where in Kolkata do you stay? Who is the mechanic?

I have a local mechanic who has tended to our cars for a long time. I live in north Calcutta, in the Burrabazar-Posta area.

Now I'd rather take the car to "Just Services" who were a Fiat authorised workshop till the Tata-Fiat venture lasted. I've had the car serviced there twice before and have myself been present through the day;can't fault the workshop as such. They still service Fiats and thanks to our forum, I am now getting hard to find genuine parts from 99rpm.com for my car :)

It's 67900 on the odo and got the brakes attended.

The mjd has been running on stock rotors and the rear brakes were also untouched till today apart from a cleaning done once.

Today got the rotors changed at Murugan's. Had the old rotors removed from my S10 which was faced and installed the same on the mjd today. The brake pads were changed a while back and were pretty good.

The rotors weren't bad either. The FR was pretty good while the FL was uneven and hence the decision to change them.

The rotor removed from the car :

The current one on left and faced on the right:

Faced and as good as new:

Similar case with the rear. Observed the brake oil level had reduced a little and suspicion was on the wheel cylinders. Removed the drum and it was RL that was leaking but decided to change them both. Also decided to change the shoes as well since they felt to be very hard and also the age factor was behind my mind. Technically the car is 6yrs old.

Current ones :

New ones getting installed:

Got the spares from Dhanam few weeks back when I was in cbe.

My Linea has done about 69K and first rotor change is soon due, raising queries out of curiosity,

1)
Wasn't possible to face old rotors and continue using it?

2)
S10 rotors were used for how long?

Old rotors definitely usable after facing. Used s10 just because I didn't want to remove current ones and keep car jacked up until the old ones are ready. Stocking the old one for future use.
Not sure how much s10 rotors were used for coz it came with the car when I got it.

Diesel Leak

The odo now stands at 69338 and the diesel leak issue is now resolved. Was fearing some complicated issue as the leak started to increase. I had to cancel my train tickets over the festive weekend and drive down to coimbatore just to get this fixed.

Was wondering if I had to remove the pump and get it checked as that might be time consuming and probably be an expensive one too. But in the end it hardly a 15 minute job. The clip/connector had a hairline crack which caused the leak and hence we replaced the same. This part we heard is not available (was told this hardly cracks/fails) and hence had to get one from scrap and used the same.

The leak before issue was fixed

The connector held in the hand was the culprit.

Change of tyres

The tyre change was a tough choice. I was not very happy with these Nexens as they were pretty hard. Next issue was that it used to scrape the wheel arch with a rear passenger onboard which was irritating. Third issue was the drop in fuel efficiency. Noticed almost 2-3 kmpl on highway. So agreed upon a deal with the same guy from whom I got the nexen and exchanged the 195/60-14 nexen to 175/65-14 Goodyear Assurance. Exchange price paid was 4k for 4 tyres and hence availed the same. Now the ride is much better, steering is smooth and importantly FE is back on track to 20+ on the highway.

The nexen was used for 11k kms before being removed. Initial impressions on assurance is good. But would have been happy with 185 section rubbers, but have to be content with stock size for now.

It's 71,372 on the odo as of Sep 10 and got the engine oil replaced. Done around 14k since the previous oil change at 57.

Went in for Shell Helix HX7 and got the oil changed at the Shell pump in Chromepet, Chennai. The experience at this pump was disappointing and I'd be staying away from them. I unfortunately picked up an incorrect oil filter which was found after draining the engine oil and hence changed oil without changing the filter. Will be changing the filter this weekend.

Cost for the hx7 can of 3.5 litres was Rs. 1627/-

Hey! Can you please check the HX7 container to see if it indicates MB Approval 229.1 or 229.3? There seems to be confusion on this issue between the website (which says 229.3) and the can itself (the ones I have purchased said 229.1)

It's 229.1 on my can.

I would suggest to use Shell R4 or R3X HDEO oil. Heavy duty oils contains high amount of ZDDP which is a anti wear additive and protects drive line components. I am using R4 on my gtx for the last 2 service and I am quite happy with the result. The only caveat is its a mineral oil so you might need to replace at 6K kms.

73,600 on the odo and got the oil filter changed as I missed it during oil change as posted above. Also attended was the faulty low speed fan which was not working for a while. The fan motor was the culprit as it ceased to work even when a direct line was used to test it. So got a used fan motor from the Punto and fixed the same. Now the low speed is back to duty :)

MJD has now crossed the 75k mark and as always is happily revving
Got the interior cleaning and UV protect treatment done at 3M Coimbatore. Plans are on to upgrade to either Punto / Linea and hence would have to part ways from the MJD in couple of months time. Though things are not confirmed yet, will be taking a call probably in Feb 2015. Until then, the MJD would be in Coimbatore and the S10 will be my daily drive in Chennai.

Few pics after the treatment.

Request to Mods: Please help to update thread title to "Fiat Palio MJD - Ownership log @ 75,000 kms"

That's one neat-looking Palio MJD. While it may be too early to part ways with this car, the spares situation and general reliability may not be great after a few years. I have done 1,42,000 km so far. Seventh year gets over in April 2015.

MJD departed yesterday afternoon leaving behind some wonderful memories. Happy to have found a caring home for him.

Whatever I buy next, the mjd will definitely be missed.
