Not specifically but wondering at the wiseness of buying a RS 245 as an 'upgrade' from a 1.8 TSI instead of a true upgrade like a 330i or a 5 (huge price diff though of course)

This is what the Skodas and VW's get us as VFM... too difficult to overlook their family when upgrading as their equivalent/upgrades in the big 3 costs 1.5~ 2x!

You should look for something really special (e.g. the new Jeep Wrangler 2L turbo-petrol). 5, X5 - yes but only with an I6 (to qualify as a remarkable upgrade over Octavia).

Such is the gem - the Octavia

Re: BMW X1 vs Audi Q3? Plus some more advice needed

Well this thread is almost what I needed to check before my next car purchase. I just have a couple of more vehicles that I am contemplating on and wish that fellow BHPians can help with their point of view.

Disclaimer: I do not intend to hijack this thread from the owner and apologize in advance if it seems like that.

I am also in the market to make my next purchase and the shortlisted candidates are BMW X1 (Sdrive XLine 20i), Mercedes Benz GLA 200 Urban Edition, Volkswagen Tiguan Highline and Audi Q3 Premium Plus.

Cheers!

Re: BMW X1 vs Audi Q3? Plus some more advice needed

The OP has asked a few questions about base versions of X1 and Q3. But since this thread is titled "BMW X1 vs Audi Q3", I assume the OP is also open to the respective top end models, namely the X1 xDrive and the Q3 quattro, both being AWD. The market being what it is, who knows - you might get a top end one for a great price

With that out of the way, I had a few related questions which are hopefully relevant to this thread.
  1. Is there a noticeable difference between a pure RWD like the previous generation X1, vs the new X1 all wheel drive with front wheel bias? How does Q3 Quattro compare to the X1 xDrive?
  2. Is there a noticeable difference between the old ZF and the new Aisin gearboxes? How do they compare to the Q3's DSG?
  3. How is the ground clearance of both in the real world? Q3 is shown as 170mm, and X1 as 179mm, but we know that numbers don't tell the whole story

Daily running = zero. This will be 95% of running.

Mountain roads + high speed cornering = very noticeable. Prefer RWD. Max 5% of running if you hit the highway often.

Monsoons = Prefer AWD.

I'm surprised no one is recommending the Volvo XC40. Love that car!

Volvo is generally found willing to match discounted prices of similar segment cars also.

RS245 is rumoured to be brought here via the CBU route and expected to cost upwards of 40L ex-showroom which makes it redundant compared to 330i.

I hope they prove me wrong and bring it at much lower price but looks unlikely.

The RS was 24-25L ex-showroom which was a superb VFM proposition.

It is indeed. But from what I have heard, there are highly any discounts on their models. The other 3 car makers in that group offer significant discounts all year around. For instance, since last 1 and half years, I have been hearing off close to 7-8L off the X1 on a general enquiry and this is further increased to close to 8-10L depending upon the region and dealer stock. That is a very significant difference.

True, a 40 lac ex-showroom price for the vRS 245 would not find many takers. I bought the vRS 230 last yr for an ex-showroom price of 27 lacs, which made it a vfm purchase.

According to a source at Skoda, they are still contemplating whether to introduce the 245 hp vRS or reintroduce the 230 hp version with some minor upgrades. The latter would ensure that the ex-showroom price is still around 30 lacs, good 15 lacs less than bmw 330i.

Under normal / usual driving conditions - No difference
For spirited driving - without using paddle shifts - Difference can be noticed
With paddle shifts - hardly any difference
If you drive a 3 series and an X1 back-to-back - you can notice the difference.

To sum it up - Not much difference in real world unless you drive hard every day. Both are very smooth and reliable.

DSG is excellent too, except for shift shocks and a bit less reliable.

Both are good for our roads. But none of them can take on the off-road requirements.

All the best!

Happy to share that I have taken delivery of X1.

Early days yet, but the car is a pleasure to drive.

Learning about the features of the car still

Re: BMW X1 vs Audi Q3? Plus some more advice needed

I walked into a BMW showroom in Bangalore last evening. Got a few surprises.
  1. SA told me that they no longer sell expedition.
  2. Then he quotes 50 lac INR with zero discounts on X-Line, saying he will provide free service/maintenance for 3 years.
  3. I asked if petrol X1 is on sale and he said no longer the case and it only sells in Delhi which will also stop.
I walked out without a test drive hardly convinced on the numbers he is quoting. I will try a different dealer. Any advice on where in Bangalore can I hunt for good deals on the X1? I am convinced that with some hard negotiations, I should be able to bring down the OTR price by about 5-6 lacs. Seek your advise.

BTW - my wife is keen on the Volvo XC40. Are they offering good discounts?

FYI - dealers in Delhi are offering straightaway 10L discounts on ex-showroom price of Diesel X1. Maybe this can act as a reference point for you. Petrol has discount of 5 lakhs.
