'97 Mitsubishi FTO

A friend of mine is smitten by a '97 model, blue FTO. It's a V6, 2L engine car. The exterior seems fine, but the car wasn't one bit as zippy as I expected it to be when I took it for a spin. Doesn't even have the acceleration of my Lancer.

The guy selling the car is a big gas-bag. The electronic odometer shows the mileage as 17000, and the guy says it's genuine! For a 12 year old car, and considering the way it runs, there's no way I believe that.

At speeds of about 60, there's a squeaking sound from one of the wheels. When I asked him about it, he said that the sound is caused because Bombay roads are part tar and part concrete or something. When I said i wasn't talking about the road noise, he said that it's because of a shock absorber that he had said he'll replace before delivery. I don't think a shock absorber can make such a noise epecially when the car is going straight and not bobbing. Maybe wheel bearing?

The price quoted is 9.5L. I don't think it's worth even half that much money. Trying to dissuade my friend from getting it. Anyone familiar with this car, or any other inputs?

FTO unfortunately I cannot give you the fullform of it here
It is a DUCK, the engine is got potential but not in that car.
I would suggest looking at a civic etc for the 10 lac price range.
FTO is a lipstick car, only looks good.

@B&T: I doubt the engine is a V6 if it is a 2L.
We have a 3.0 V6 Galant, which I am guessing is similar to the V6 in the FTO, and even after 1,10,000km, the performance is great!
If he doesn't mind spending 10L, why not look at some other jap imports, which are more tuner friendly?

I saw V6 written on the head. The engine didn't look very massive, like a 3L. And you've seen the front of the FTO, I assume. It doesn't have a very large engine compartment.

Please do point to some imports if you are aware of them. Would appreciate that.

Ajay, dump it. The car is as many have said, is not even worth half that amount and you are right, its a sluggish lemon.

9 L is way too high for a FTO.U could go for a Cedia instead and you will gladly enjoy the drive.

The 6a12 is a bomb of an engine if its kept in good shape - its a 2 liter, 200ps engine that has a redline of 8500rpm. However everything else in that car sucks lol.

A V6 redlining to 8500 rpm is great. Why does this car suck. I am sure 200 ps is good power. Does it not handle good or electronic issues or something else??

There are several versions of that engine. Only the MIVEC develops 200ps and only that is worth getting. For all we know this example has the normal DOHC one that puts out "only" 170PS.

As Iceman said, the FTO is a car which was only meant to look good. It never ever performed nearly as well as it's rivals in the market.

It's a front wheel drive, and no matter what power the engine puts out it probably wont give your friend the excitement he wants. You'd be better off looking at a 2nd hand BMW E36 or E46...
