Buying A 1997 Bmw 525 Tds (e39)

One of my batchmate from Delhi, was considering the same option and fortunately didnt close the deal as the maintenance was costing bomb. Not sure what did he buy eventually as he was considering options among new 3 series and an A4.

Dear Fellow BHPians,

I'm also hopeless in love with a 1997 525 TDS.

I came across one the other day and have gone and just carried out a cursory check on the same.

Its done around 123000 kms and looks to be in good condition.

I will be taking it to my mechanic as well as an authorized BMW service centre so as to get a better idea of the car.

I'm torn between this car and a 1994 316i, which is also in reasonably good condition.

I have read each and every post on this topic and wanted to know if i run it around 200 km a week and not more than 14000km a year, how much will my annual maintenance be? I am going to be buying my first car and I want it to be a joy rather than something I regret.

Any help in clarifying the same would be helpful.

PS - How much would an engine overhaul, paintjob and new tyres cost for a car like this?
