Couldn't put it any better than Entropy did. Also, the E220 has better fuel efficiency while the E280 has superior refinement.

Yup, I suggest waiting for the all new generation too. If in a hurry, bargain HARD. Plenty of discounts on the currently sold outgoing model.

Autohangar Has announced taking bookings for the New E Class[W212] from tommorow 1st July. Got an sms today from their sales advisor.
Will check what engine options they offering. But be prepared its going to be atleast 10.00 lacs more than the present E on road, because of all the discounts etc.

I say neither- get the 520d that's priced similar to the E220 but goes like the E280 !

The new E I believe will come as the E350 to begin with.

I guess the 220 and 280 cdi's will be replaced by 250 and 350 respectively. They say deliveries will begin early september. Bargain hard if you're going for the current model like GTO said. But I'd rather wait for the new one if I'm gonna be using it for more than 3 yrs.

Sahil, Any idea of the discounts on the 5 series and the on road price of the 520D after the disounts?
I know you like the BMW, I owned one of the first three 7 series in India wayback in 1982! Switched to Mercs later on in '90s, maybe will again look at the Beemers. Just that the rear seat and ride comfort and the rfts are still bothering.

New W212 all the way. Don't have to bother for another 6 years so in my book money well spent with no issues of premature exchange/trades (read big hole in the pocket).

Don't bother with the current W211 unless you can't wait, if so go for a preowned one as they will be very good deals and when you do trade for a W212 you will get a far far superior price (close to no loss on the preowned w211) if you time it and play it smart . Typically dealers entice old model owners with sweet trade in right after the initail new model hype fades (read 8 months) and volumes need to come in. You can literally trade in your preowned with no loss and buy the new car at the same new car launch price which remains for a few years. Seen this happen every time new E's are launched.

I would wait for a while and get a preowned W211. i prefer the looks to the incoming W212. Also with the advent of electronics, the W210 (both models) had a lot of electronic gremlins in them which were sorted in the W211. My guess is you would get a new like W211 in the range of 20lacs and thats 2007 cars im talking about. Worth every penny isn't it?

Don't know current discounts but I got a good deal on my last Beemer. The 520d came 40 on road.
The rfts are a pain no doubt but after I've shifted to tubeless the ride is soooo much better inspite of the 45 profile. The rear seat comfort is now almost at par with the E if not at par IMO. It also provides some more cabin space and goes like a bullet!

Could not agree with you more ! The new gen (to be launched) Merc looks like weird to me. The present one is way better to look at.

Save money & get a better looking car

Cheers

For the self-driver, I couldn't agree anymore. BMW's are way better to drive.

However, for the chauffeur-driven types, Mercs offer a higher level of comfort. And I'm talking about the entire range.....C over the 3 (better rear seat, more space), E over the 5 and the S over the 7 (which has a surprisingly stiff ride + road noise). The S insulates you like no one else.

Mind you, this includes 3 & 5 series swapped with regular Michelin tyres. I've compared an E to a 5 on the highway and a C to the 3 in the city. Merc's better comfort levels are not only due to the lack of RFT's. It's also in how the suspension is set up. BMW's are more handling oriented, and thus, even with normal rubber, don't match the comfort of the Mercs. The difference is v-a-s-t in the C / 3 and the S / 7. But it's narrower in the E / 5, yet noticeable.

Discounts being offered in Chennai:

E220/ E280 - 5 lacs

I think this can be easily pushed further on negotiation. E 280 was sold at 6 lacs discount in Dec 2008 and E 220 at 8 lacs off.

520d - 2 lacs off, presently.
