Need Help with Importing a Lancer EVO X

Hi Guys.
A Friend of mine is interested in buying the Lancer Evolution X.
He wants to know how should he go about it. About the importing etc part of it. I have learnt that there are some import restrictions.
Do they apply to the Lancer Evo X?
If yes, how can it be imported? ( I saw in one of the Imports spotted in ... thread that there was a lancer Evo X)

Hope to get some information on it.

Thanks
Abhinav

Better yet, wait for Mitsubishi to launch the car officially in India. Talks have been making the rounds for long. HM is slow, but is sure to launch the EVO X in India.

First of all it has to be imported from japan.[imports only from country of origin] or the speedo has to be in KMPH , it has to right hand drive.
The car has to be 40,000 USD or more or the engine capacity has to be more than 2 liters for it to be imported without any Homologation ,but since there are couple imported [I think you can with out need for that].
If one has IEC number it helps.
Duty is levied on the invoice values and the transport charges.
Now for the actual part , you [your friend ] has to go and buy the car from a dealer or factory [if you can] and get the invoice for it[be sure that he/she can get the custom clearance for the car from his country].and necessary papers from them. Need to get road worthiness certificate from the receptive country's Transport authorities.
Load it on transport [ship or airplane]. and get it to India. Than the real hassle starts, need to get custom clearance [here the IEC helps], if that perticular model has been imported earlier than one does not need to homologate the vehicle.[in this case you do not have to].
PAy all the taxes for the dock and start with the RTO paper work along with insurance and registration.
And after long this if you have the strenght to stand, enjoy the vehicle.
or another simple way is to get some to import it for you.

Thanks for the info guys.

@ GTO , he has been waiting for it for a bit too long.
Any sources in HM to confirm it.
He's ok with spending about 50k on it.

@Nitrous - Thanks PM'd him

@Dinar - Thanks for the info mate, I think getting someone to import it is a good and tension free way.
Will get in touch with some companies which help importing cars.

Nope, law has been changed. You can import from any country of sale (or is it manufacture...).

Pay Special Additional Duty of some minor % to get around the capacity limitation.

for those cars already approved by ARAI, a major headache can be avoided.

best bet would be to get in touch with someone who already has got it imported. he will definitely know better.

there is a roundway but its complicated. one can buy it from a place like dubai for example and then he can bring it to india while he comes back in TR( less taxes etc.). then it can be brought from him. but the nameship can be changed only after 2 yrs after TR.

this method turns out to be real cheap both price wise and moral wise!!
if all other fails. then this is the way to go. sad world aint it?

You don't get lower duties with TR. This is a myth that I too used to believe in. TR is the only way to bring used cars to India, with a humongous duty tacked on, much higher than what it is for new cars.

What you are thinking about is the EPCG scheme where hotels can import cars for marginal duty, but are prevented from reselling them for x number of years.

Dubai is LHD.
