re: VW Polo GT TDI @ 190 BHP : 0 - 100 in 7.5 seconds

Hey Raj that is a much needed upgrade on the GT. I have loads of problems driving my GT at night on single lane roads, especially with "High Beam Loving" Dodos all around.

However, I have the following queries:

- You have mentioned its a Plug & Play, though the wattage is rated at 100/90w. Have you observed any heating issues yet ?

- The throw of the beam on the pic that you have shared looks great. But that area seems to be quite dark where you have taken the snap. Do you have any issues while driving on a Single lane, poorly lit area ?

- I have changed the Bulbs on my GT to Philips Crystal vision 60/55W. Though the beam is quite good in a dark areas, on a single lane with oncoming vehicles on high beam, its almost non-existent. I have been planning to go in for OSRAM night breakers. Any suggestions for this ?

re: VW Polo GT TDI @ 190 BHP : 0 - 100 in 7.5 seconds

Definitely a much needed mod for the GT. I got the 100/90 upgrade done for my GT from Evo too. It has made a world of difference to night time driving.

Vikram, I was using Osram NBU's prior to this upgrade and the 100/90's are much better. I have not really faced any heating issues as such but then again, I haven't driven for more than a couple of hours at a time with the headlights on. Even then, I only used the low beams.

re: VW Polo GT TDI @ 190 BHP : 0 - 100 in 7.5 seconds

@BRRaj : That's a cool update. But sorry to be the nag here, what happens to the warranty of the head lamp considering the excessive heat from the halogen gas ? Considering this I bought OSRAM NB and they are far better than the stock lamps but nothing can match the 100/90 wattage of the regular halogens.

@Vik0728 : Osram NBs are awesome if upgrading from the stock. The illumination is spot on and the reach on low beam is very wide. The Life of these lamps are pretty good too. On our Vento, these NBs are going strong on their 24 month illumination. Its priced steep at Rs 2000.
However a plug and play relay and a pair of 100/90s would total upto Rs1200and may be the warranty is history then.

I agree completely with you Hells_Fury since i have used 100/90 on my previous car Getz Prime and I know what a difference this makes.

But I am really concerned about the VW Warranty, especially since I have a 3yrs one on my GT. I just don't want to give them any chance !!

Regarding your 100/90 swap, were any wires clipped or was it just a plug & play type ? Also, have you installed a Relay as well ?

Thats my biggest concern for not going in for 100/90 no_boundaries!!

Not that Germans by default need a lot of haggling to dishonor a standard warranty, I wouldn't want to hand over the sword myself.

No wires were spliced, it was a plug and play installation. And yes, a relay was installed.

Thank you for the update bro. One last important question!!

Are there any noticeable heating issues ?

I have used the 100/90 bulbs on my car before and I know exactly how to keep them running cool, but you are the expert on the Polo.

As well, which bulbs did you go for on your 100/90 and what was the cost for the entire setup?

I haven't come across any issues but then again my night driving is quite limited.

Oh I definitely wouldn't consider myself as any sort of expert I would love to know what you do to ensure they run cool though.

I'm using the same Hella bulbs that Raj installed. Don't remember the exact cost sine I got other things done during the same visit. I guess it was around Rs. 1.2k but I can't say for sure.

Well not that I was the pioneer behind the idea, but here are some steps I always ensured during my night drives for the 100/90 Bulbs in my Getz:

- If the drive involved lot of In-city runs along some well lit roads, I would use my fog lamps.

- Every & Anytime I did use the headlights during in-city runs, I would always ensure to switch them off at every traffic stop.

Not sure how much this actually helped, but I never had an issue with these bulbs during my 4 year ownership of the car. Or may be, just the comfort of a reliable Hyundai After sales at the back of my mind helped!!

Execssive heat is usually generated when in high beam so to avoid it use only when it is needed.

Usually i avoid using high beam when
- Visibility is good.
- When driving in slow moving traffic.
- If following another car.

I was coming from maddhur ccd to bangalore, some where inbetween i hit a pothole and had a tyre burst (curtsey - poor stock bulbs). Lucily i was doing below 120kmph at around 2:30am. If i had better lights this would have been easily avoided.
Usually i don't mind warranties going for toss as these are life saving modification.

For the same reason i am already working on brake upgrades.

re: VW Polo GT TDI @ 190 BHP : 0 - 100 in 7.5 seconds

Agreed, however, even on the low beam the wattage is high.
Also, my usage pattern of head lamps on the high beam is similar to what you've said. I rarely use them in city however I like to drive at night and that's when I need visibility.
I suffered the same on the Vento despite switching to Osram NB as the high beam throw is poor. Result = 45mins stop over on an isolated empty stretch with women in the car to switch to spare.

That's an excellent line and you might have just changed my peeve on warranty issues. Let me explore the feasibility and probably get the update done.
Regarding brakes, any information that you can share ?

As per @Hells_Fury review on hella 100/90 it should not cause any problem.

Keep us posted Raj. I guess I'll have the tires and brakes done first before heading for a remap.
