Just wanted to understand the views of engine tuners on this message board ...

Given that there aren't too many affordable gasoline-fueled, OEM-turbcharged cars sold in India (VW Polo and TATA Zest come to mind ... and 2nd hand Skoda Octavia too), do you believe that the TATA Zest Revotron 1.2T will lend itself well to engine tuning mods ?

Has anyone lined up an early car, to check if something can be done ?

The engine can be tuned for higher power output, but the gearbox is at its max rated torque, it will fail with any more torque/BHP. that's the reason TATA has restricted the engine to that power output.

Generically speaking, I understand that tuners are able to tailor-make power and torque curves, and that it is possible to raise power and yet limit peak torque by "clipping".

Do tuners think that this specific engine is at it's power limit given peak torque limitations ?

My (non-expert) views on this :

1) The fact that the Revotron has multiple maps is probably no help to aftermarket tuners.

2) The segment in which the car is sold isn't exactly a lucrative business opportunity for tuners to invest time and research into.

3) The turbo is quite small, so even if it was pushed harder, it might not be that much better. However, that said, it would probably be easier to get more power out of the forced-induction revotron that the same engine without a turbo.

4) The silver-est lining might be that all the plumbing for forced induction is already done from the factory. Intercooler included. Some crazy DIY-er might try swapping out the turbo for a differently rated one for more kick and a significant power bump.

Thanks for your views, Rehaan.

1) Agreed. However, if one were to eke out more power from the engine, these modes could store the new maps that a tuner would undoubtedly create.

2) Agreed. However, any work done in this area on ZEST would probably come in useful once BOLT is launched. And certainly that segment will be interested in the tuning potential.

3) Agreed. If it isn't possible to get higher boost out of the current turbo.

4) Most interesting. Would really like to hear from experts on this.
