Leather Seats, Trim and Upholstery

Back in the 1960s and 1970s one heard of Connolly leather and Roser leather, even chrome leather. Back home in India there was the Dharampur Leather-cloth Co. Roser leather was used in Mercedes cars.

The CF Roser GmbH company in Esslingen, Germany shut down in 1994 due of environment preservation legislation. That beautiful building is now a beer factory and gym.

Until 2002, leather seats in most models of Jaguar, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Ferrari used Connolly leather. The company shut down in June 2002 and decided that all stocks will be sold until depleted.

Dharampur Leather used to be in Prabhadevi opposite the Passport office, unless I'm mistaken. I don't remember when that shut down.

Interestingly, Sunil Suresh started his Stanley leather factory in Bangalore in 1995, after Roser shutdown. Coincidence?

Looks like world-wide, people are frowning on killing animals for leather, hides and furs.
The sale of seal, tiger and leopard skin is now criminal. The shutting down of the old world's best leather companies has followed. There are good synthetic leather substitutes.

Why must then a European Nappa ox or any other animal for that matter have to lose its life for a human to aspire for its leather in India, the birthplace of Ahimsa?

Isnt leather made from cows/buffalos. Its a shame to throw away the hide after eating the meat. What better way to utilize skin. Infact leather prices can come down drastically and stray cow problem of delhi will also be solved if we build lots of keather factories!
Jokes apart. synthetic alternatives are not really alternatives for everybody. Many people can have either pure cotton towel type seats or leather, syntheic irritates their skin
So sometimes leather is the only option because towel type in a skoda looks really bad

By the way, street cows and buffaloes (often with injuries and skin diseases) that feed on garbage, plastic bags and newsprint, don't yield high quality leather. High quality leather is obtained by slaughtering well-fed healthy animals on a specialized cattle farm.

And India does not consume enough beef to have prize cattle farms. The beef in India is also of poor quality. (BTW this also applies to Indian ham and pork).
Ergo, most Indian upholstery quality leather is imported.

The chemical or enzyme that causes allergic reaction, is as likely to be remnants of the leather tanning process and cheap dyes, as the synthetics comprising naugahyde. Some humans are also allergic to pure latex (you know what is made from latex). Let's leave the subject of histamine stimulation and allergens to specialist immunologists.

Do you advocate wearing leather shoes or rubber chappals ?

In line with your topic, help us to understand by telling us what you wear ?

I know its way OT, but I couldn't help but agree with you on this! It's almost impossible to find a good steak anywhere in India.

That does it, now I can only think of T-Bone from IHOP.

Coming back to topic...

While India may be the birthplace of ahimsa, the meat-eaters do out-number vegetarians here.

Ram, is this thread about Ahimsa or Modifications? If it is about ahimsa, I will move it to Shifting Gears section.

Right or wrong , you are sitting on a dead animal .
Technology and equally the quality of alternative leathers have improved ,so that we dont go or encourage killing innocent creatures .

Yeah.. and most of us eat eggs in cakes, icecream. Eating eggs is like eating the cell that creates life. Also we should stop taking medicine. Lets stop using cosmetics, medicines etc as they are tested on animals before being approved for human trials. How many animals suffer and die due to this. Lets stop wearing silk sarees/silk shirts as thousands of silk caterpillars are slaughtered. No wooden stuff as you are indirectly contributing to habitat destruction and the extinction of several species including human beings. Eat only organic food as pesticides are used to kill caterpillars, bugs, worms that feed on plants. I can go on.

Each one has his or her own preferences. Let it be.

Can this thread be shifted to shifting gears ?
