The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

The "chrome jaala craziness"

  • What I do understand is that there exists a thread on "weird and wacky mod jobs" wherein vehicles with these crazy chrome mesh grilles are often featured. No offence meant, but I thought to discuss seperate viewpoints behind the rising craziness of these hideous looking grilles.
  • The amount of elite i20s with chrome mesh grilles I think supposedly outnumber the ones with stock grilles, in every corner of North India.
  • Another common car is the swift.
  • These days, even cars like the newer zest are made victims of flashy hideousness, much worse, even I saw a new Fiat linea with that tacky grille.
  • Question is, from where does this mentality of "spoiling the car" arise?
  • any thoughts?

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

1) This is not only a trend in North India but in the South as well.
2) Cars like the Toyota Etios/Liva , Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki products are the most common.
3) If i'm not wrong, these are a part of many limited edition models too. Toyota Corolla Aero was one common example.
4) It's not wrong to add chrome, excessive chrome just kills the originality of the vehicles.
5) For me, it simply spoils the aesthetics of the car. Just my 1 cent.

Cheers & Regards

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

I saw a new Innova with this chrome grill. It was a ghastly sight.

The worst is the New Dzire. Headlights have black surrounds; Maruti destroyed balance with the chrome tooth; and owners completed the front end destruction with chrome mesh grills.

Carbon Fibre/Black Vinyl, Chrome accessories and DRLs are so cheap that people use them excessively without any taste. The lack of taste and cheap cost are the culprits.

This trend is catching up in Mumbai also. i20s, Ertigas and Swifts are the frontrunners in these cars as per my observation. It looks absolutely disgusting. I wonder why on earth do those owners opt for these grills. How on earth can anyone like those hideous looking grills?

More commonly, these are quoted as "Bentley Grills"

Even though I am not much of a chrome lover, I can't fathom why it is so difficult to accept / ignore others' tastes. Is it written in stone somewhere that using chrome is tasteless whereas black is the only style statement? Let people enjoy and spend their money on what they like. Not everyone might like the "understated" look. Who are we to judge them?

ROFL - These grills look deadly

I saw one on an Innova taxi which had come for a foam wash at a detailing shop recently.

Somehow couldn't help but think of Salman Khan's Bracelet.

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

Too much chrome really makes them look like the grilles on Mumbai suburban railway windows or the mosquito nets.

Are not we being too judgmental here? I understand that we are a group of petrolheads/dieselheads who happen to be passionate about their wheels, but that does not gives us the right to be judgmental about other's choices/preferences. If you don't like it, ignore and move on.

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

This trend is hugely in vogue here in Goa too.

Now is it still the manufacturers to be blamed for giving massive Chrome Garnish on boot, etc. like we have seen in Dzire, Jazz, Creta, etc.

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

There was a point of time when this used to look good. I believe chrome grill complements a car when the grille area as well as the mesh size is small. It does look good on few cars like a matte blue swift, or a pre facelift Fiesta. They look hideous on a white car.

Too much of it spoiled the novelty it had. 50% of the swifts/Dzires/i20's sport these grilles now.

Nobody is being judgmental here. We are just discussing about the latest in-thing in vehicle modification, say, like discussing the latest fashion.

There are several threads here on topics that are purely subjective - tastefully modified cars/weird and wacky mods/quirky signs/weird 2-wheel mods etc, we don't call them too judgmental, do we?

We aren't commenting/ranting anything here. Just sharing an opinion we have on the recent run off with these silly garish Chrome grilles. Relax guys!

This grille suits some cars and some it looks horrendous. Nor sure what people are running behind it paying 5K approx.

I have been asked by 5 accessories installers when i had gone to check on something. They were ready to give me a discount of 1K on the grilles. I politely refused. On that very day they installed these grilles on 7 cars in front of me.

IMO, darker colored cars are suited for the grilles as compared to white or silver.

We are not being judgemental, we are just discussing the taste of likes of Bappi Lahiris, Govindas, etc. wrt cars.
Who is saying it's bad but words like Bling, etc. are present in English language for some purpose.
The users are just doing something hatke, chahe kitna bhi logon ko khatke.

re: The obsession with chrome mesh grilles!

Hahaha good thread, I have been wondering about this myself, sometime back I saw a Q7 with this grill with the audi logo bang in the center.
Definitely weird, yep makes you stand out, way out!

O.T - Talking about grills, on Sunday we saw a Red State Transport bus with a Mahindra Scorpio type (tooth) grill.

Cheers!
