Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Nice thread there. In the Fortuner's boot, I usually have
  • Michelin Branded Tire Inflator - I like this one since it is relatively quicker to fill in air in deflated tire
  • Jopasu Duster
  • Jumper Cables
  • Snatch Straps (5 Tonnes Capacity) + 2 D Shackles
  • WD-40
  • Duct Tape
  • Small Items - M-Seal, double open-end spanner set (6-14 sizes)

All these items are neatly put together in a carry bag.

Other than these, I also have an Ice Box (Aristo make, 25 Litres Capacity) - Helps in long trips with keeping food items/beverages cool and a Subwoofer in neat sealed box

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Are there any brand recommendations for a good towing rope and jumper cables? Something that can be easily ordered online or @ JC Road, Bangalore (this is a road where car spare parts etc. are sold). The vehicle in question is an XUV500. Going on a long road trip in the coming week, and while I tick boxes on other stuff (including portable air pump), I am missing the tow rope and jumper cables.

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Have embarked upon journeys more than 4000 kms at least twice every year and my basic essentials in the boot doesn't run into a big list more so for the fact that I would have done the homework before - Battery Health, Bulbs, Wipers, Tires 'et al. So its limited to the following items:
  • Inflator
  • Tubeless Puncture Repair Kit
  • Wheel Spanner and Jack
  • Lots of News papers & a Bottle of Colin Spray
  • Windscreen Wiper/Cleaner Arm (T)
  • Shampoo Sachets (I can always get a bottle of water at the next Hotel/Dhaba/Fuel station)
  • Waste cloth - To clean headlights and tail lamps (newspapers are useless here)
  • Extra fuses (have carried them only once)
  • Set of extra bulbs is usually in the Glovebox

In fact, 2 weeks before we flew to Delhi to drive back to Bangalore after picking a used car. Since we drove back on the same day, all we had in our bag was these items and we checked one bag into the Cargo .

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Ahh..my list is quite long..:

Goodyear tyre inflator
Steel towing cables
Baseball bat
Medical kit (the one that came with the XUV plus an assortment of general tablets, pain sprays)
Elastic cables to tie up stuff on the carrier
A bottle of Jack Daniels and assorted dry snacks plus paper plates n spoons (for those unplanned overnight trips)
A 6 * 4 vinyl sheet, in case want to stop by at some point and sit down
Adequate plastic bags, paper
Bottles of Sanitizer and mouthwash
Water, average couple of bottles
A can of dry fruits (when the kids get pesky)
Car inverter charger (the one that Mahindra has, can charge my laptop)
Wheel spanner / jack / basic tool set
Spare bulbs (not that I know to change them now)
Pepper spray

None of these are open or visible. i have tucked everything into the many nooks and crannies the XUV has, so nothing is visible outside. Also have a phobia for rattles, so have fixed all these things and more in slots so that they cannot move and create noise when the car goes over rough patches. Have also packed up the doors (internally) with some foaming material so there are no door vibrations (something the XUV is famous for)

Cheers!

That gives me cold water throughout the journey and plenty of it in case of emergencies.

How do you locate these RO plants en route?

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Just to add on to the Jumper cables; unless you know how to jump start the car and know which lead goes where, it's safer to either not carry them or learn how to use them if you do indeed carry them. It's dangerous if you don't. The other such item is the tow rope. The 'Made in China' ones are the most dangerous ones specially with the D shackle. Your tow rope has to be of a rating strong enough to pull YOUR vehicle out. Don't use something for a Gypsy to pull out a 100 series Land Cruiser. You got a time bomb ticking on your hands if you do!! That D shackle is going to go flying like an unguided missile and could damage your wind screen, your head or someone else in the vicinity. It can kill someone! Having said this, i carry:
1) Tow rope, rated to my vehicle
2) Tyre puncture kit
3) Foot pump
4) a Torch
5) Dirt gloves
6) Phone charger
7) First aid kit
8) Hazzard triangles
9) Hi viz jacket
10) a small funnel and finally
11) a pair of sunglasses always!

7. Spare Head lamps
8. A small plastic bucket
9. An Umbrella
10. A gym bag containing one set of spare clothes in case I need to travel direct from office to my native place (I have done that quite few times)
11. First Aid Kit
12. Car tool kit
13. Couple of old news papers
14. Car body cover neatly rolled and tied (I have used it only once or twice!!)

These are always in my glove-box / door pads:

Useful post. I HAVE to carry a mobile phone charger (with two ports, should upgrade to a 2.1A) and a charging cable or two permanently kept in the car. And I keep a tyre inflator and a dashcam in addition to what has been supplied by the manufacturer. To that, I guess I will need to add all the other items you mention. These are core.

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Apart from the standard spare tyre, jack, and the emergency triangle,

My car boot contains:
a. A small compact kit containing
Cutting Pliers
Puncture Kit
Screwdrivers
A ball of thin/strong thread
A Knife
Insulation tapes
b. 2 umbrellas

c. 2-3 empty plastic sacks (25/50KG rice bag types )
(useful when going to supermarkets/malls - All items in the trolley are emptied in this, rather than buying plastic bags at the shop - go green, you can say!)

d. A plastic tarpaulin sheet 6feet x 4 feet
(very useful - can be used to spread on the ground and have a small picnic when doing outstation/local trips, can be spread on the seats to protect them when carrying rough items, can be used to fold and a place to kneel down when changing the tyres, etc!

All together less than 2kgs in weight :-)

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

My car will always have –

Tool Kit
Jopasu duster
Tyre Puncture kit
Sun Shade Mesh
Tissue box
First Aid Box
Umbrella

What I plan to add is a Tyre Inflator & Jumper cables

Has anyone used ResQTech tyre inflator ? Kindly share some reviews; It looks economical with 1 year warranty..

Also please suggest some good tyre inflators, don’t plan to spend more bugs on it..

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

Items in my car boot, apart from those supplied by the manufacturer:
-Michelin tyre inflator
-Tow rope with D-shackles
-Jumper cable
-Assorted tools, duct tape, insulation tape, lengths of electrical wire
-Bag-full of assorted ropes
-Cotton and heavy duty gloves
-Old pair of wipers in case of damage or theft of those in use
-Tubeless tyre puncture repair kit
-2 lit bottle of water for topping up wiper fluid
-LED lamp with long cable, powered by cigarette lighter socket
-An old T-shirt, towel (I was stuck in my car for 23 hours during the 26/7 flood)
-Lots of odd items like rags, cable ties, paper plates, a plastic tumbler, three fanbelts from my previous Qualis (useful to make a short tow rope for smaller, lighter cars), No Entry rat repellent, naphthalene balls (to replace those I put in the engine bay)

All these items fit into a couple of soft bags which are in turn covered by a large black cloth so they are hidden from casual prying eyes. Every 6 months, when the car goes for service I lug all this stuff up to the house and go through the items, just to refresh my memory on what I’ve got and what can be got rid of.

- My car cover (used every night except during the monsoons)

In the passenger compartment:
- Car user’s manual
- Tissue box
- Digital tyre pressure indicator
- Toilet paper roll, flattened
- Combination 3-round+2USB splitter, Cellphone charger with 3 USB slots
- Forward/reverse dashcam
- Resqme survival tool hanging from the car keyring
- Swiss Army knife (always in my keyring in my backpocket)
- Fixed roll-up sunshades for sides and back
- Folding reflective sunshade for front
- Box of camphor tablets to replenish 3-4 always scattered around
-Two dustcloths-one for dusty external work and one for internal use
- Microfibre glove to clean the dash/ICE etc.
- A home-made rexine-foam cushion-like piece wedged between centre console and driver’s seat to prevent things from falling between the two.
- A pocketbook in which I note the fuelling/consumption details at each fill-up

These are standard fixtures in the car when used for normal office commuting or city drives. For longer drives with family lots of other temporary items fill up the boot as well as the passenger compartment.

Re: Must-Have Items in the boot of your car

The Must have item in a car boot is a SPARE TYRE which is properly inflated and in good shape
Alongwith it my list is as below

Jopasu duster
3m cloth
2 litre bottle of water.

Boot items vary from car to car, and varies if you are on long journey.
Else I try to keep it to as mimimum as possible.
