GPS system for Bangalore- Pls advise

Hi Folks,

A fellow BHPian (Wheeliej) wants to get a GPS for her car from Germany.

the product is available at:
http://www.typhoon.de/en/art.php?p=761

My question is: Are these GPS recievers compatible with Indian map softwares. Also, is Bangalore on teh GPS map yet. And, would there be any issues in sourcing adequate language software that could be compatible with this reciever.

I would really appreciate a quick response since she is flying back from germany tomorrow and needs to take a call before that.

GPS has been functional in Bangalore sine March 06. BMTC buses are increasingly being fitted with GPS receivers to track their movement by BMTC control centers. Coverage exists for Bangalore, ND, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune. An Indian company SatNav - http://www.satnavtechnologies.com already has a GPS navigational receiver SatGuide - http://www.satguide.in retailing at around Rs 38K

Satguide is a state-of-the-art pocket PC-based touch screen navigation device that could enable users in Bangalore to navigate around the city with ease.

SatNav Technologies had partnered with Nippon Audiotronix to make the product available here, Nippon Audiotronix National Sales Manager Sandeep Arora told reporters. Satguide would allow the user to choose the best possible route once the destination address was entered. It would display a map on the screen and prompt the user through voice commands on directions to take. Additionally, the system was built in with a comprehensive database of 22 categories, including public utility, emergency services and entertainment locations. It has in-built GPS receivers that receive signals from three of 24 GPS satellites orbiting the earth.

i'm sorry i don't know where to buy it and the price of it...

Thanks for your response guys....What I gather from this is that GPS is available in Bangalore. I will ask Wheeliej to check whether the GPS she is looking at in Germany would be compatible in India. But by the looks of it, I think she would be better off buying one from bangalore itself.

Hi all, Thanks for your advice. I am now back in Bangalore.

The only reason I thought about buying the Typhoon one was that I was getting it at a great price (EUR 199). The rest of the good GPS' with great features were atleast € 350)

Mods, please close this thread
