Engine Swap for Maruti 1000 - points to note

Hey Guys,

I own a 96' M-1000 which has done about 96k kms till date...the mech tells me that the engine's still in great shape and wouldnt require to be worked on for at least another 50-60k kms. But one of my pal's got a ported & polished esteem engine (carb version, run about 10k kms) that he's planning to give away and i'm keen on picking that up.

Now, i hear conflicting versions of being/not being able to fit an esteem engine onto a 1000. Isnt it possible to mate an esteem engine onto a 1000's gearbox ? That, if possible, would make for a great combination.

Request the 'been there done that' types here to help me out by listing what can / cant be done. Also, an approximation of the total cost involved for the basic conversion will save me from being ripped out by the mechs here

Eagerly looking forward to your responses...

Cheers....

Are the gear ratios for the 1000 and the Esteem same?

@slipstream: viper did my M1000 -> Esteem conversion about a year & a half ago.

If you're picking up the entire engine / gearbox / accessory drive combo then you've got no problem, & should have the car back within 2 days.

If you're not, then you'll have to procure various bits & pieces. Call / PM him for greater details.

All the best.

It is a pretty tedious job to mate the 1000s gearbox to the esteem engine. The casing bolts are in a totally different position. Id rather suggest you get an esteem gearbox alongwith the engine.

You may still be able to use the 1000s short final drive diff in the Esteem's box to get the best of both worlds.

Re: Engine Swap for Maruti 1000 - points to note

What about transplanting a 1.6 from Baleno. Esteem (swift sedan) did came in 1.6 in some European markets. Anyone tried? What would be the roadblocks? Driveshafts, gearbox, mounts?
I am planning a resurrection project for my dad's M1000.
