Shankar.. looks hot... it was hot.. it could do about 160-170kph... it had a 1198 cc motor.. fully polished balanced blueprinted... full flow oil system, close ratio gearbox... Disc brakes up the front... compression was 200psi.. two twin choke weber Ida Carbies... big valves.. double sprung valve springs... electronic ignition... This car was a thoroughbred raced over two generations, firs in the hands of Peter Adams in the 60's at the Race track in Alipur, near the britania biscuit factory... it was a red and white fiat with 2"spacers... and then in my generation in the 80's when we took it to Sholavaram and Won... Adi Irani built the car... it was sold to a ...Ronno pal choudhry... it was last seen in Asansole somewhere... so if you see this car... consider yourself lucky... if you find this car for sale... Buy it you would being getting a Historically significant car

1969 Fiat Abarth 1000 TC Corsa

This is no Fiat 600 (Fiat Seicento). Where are the suicide doors?

It is lower, squatter, shod with Cromodo alloy wheels and classically always seen with the rear hood open.

Modded Premier Padminis (Fiat 1100)-1969abarth1000tccorsa.jpg

The open rear hood supposedly improved the aerodynamics of the car and increased top speed.

A rounded rear, unless you can make it very long, creates a great deal of drag.
German aerodynamicist Wunibald Kamm showed that a better drag-reducing tail end design for a car is one that tapers and is then cut off abruptly. Counter-intuitively, a teardrop aerodynamic shape that tapers smoothly to a point leads to surface drag which disappears when the tail is cutoff.

Coming back, it is a
1969 Fiat Abarth 1000 TC Corsa "pocket rocket" Touring Car.

Did not share any more than parts of the bodyshell of the suicide-doored Fiat 600.

It was powered by an A112 Abarth engine of 1,049cc. In racing guise, the engine pumped out 112 hp, allowing for a top speed of 200 km/h.
It competed in road rallies s.a. the Mille Miglia and the Giro di Sicilia.

The driver as painted on the door is A. Vincentini

Note the following:
the oil-cooler radiator integrated into the front fibreglass fairing.
front doors are not suicide doors.
engine cover propped open
Love the ganged wipers.

Many of the factory works Abarth 1000 TCs were painted with red checkerboard roofs and red stripes.

In my childhood, I used to see a lot of Beetles (the original one) were also made to run with the hood open in Nigeria.

Reason was not just aerodynamics, but engine cooling.

A lot of the modded cars thereabouts run Subaru engines im told. Perhaps they too would be running with open hoods, but due to space constraints.

My Find

One of my friends has a used car showroom in Bangalore.
I went to visit him this weekend as i hadnt met him for a month.

As soon as i reached there, this is what i saw (Attachment)

I came to know that the guy who has put the vehicle for sale does a living by restoring and modifying the classics.

He is currently quoting Rs 2,10,000 for this Fiat.

There is one 118NE modified for sale, but will get the pics later as the vehicle was in another used car showroom.

cheers:
