Have been wondering if this topic makes any sense, but could not resist asking anyways. As a kid I had once put together a "STEREO SYSTEM" in my room using a basic car tape deck called "Speedking" (I am talking of long back), an equalizer from Radio Shack (USA), Speakers 8" fitted in a wooden box & an AC/DC convertor from Bhagirath Palace near Chandni Chowk in Delhi. The whole SYSTEM had costed me some Rs.1500 back then & more than the sound it was the sheer joy of "putting it together".

Now ofcourse with the passage of time & improvement in technology......I was wondering what's so special about buying a ready made setup, why not go back 20 years & again put together a stereo with all the amazing equipment available now for the car audios.

Please advice if this is at all a sensible thought or does it deserve being thrown out of the window this minute......

My Querries :

Cost of putting together a reasonable sounding system with a car HU

Would it acheive sound compareable or better than an audio system available off the shelf in the home audio segment

Is it going to be trouble free or will it have glitches which need to be addressed every now & then

The advantage as I see it is that a good HU now comes capable of playing the iPOD, memory stick / USB, etc. The overall size of the equipment is smaller. Finally the thrill of DIY is there:)

It would be nice to hear from the Gurus if this is achieveable

Thanks & looking forward to some useful inputs..........
