Tata offers Ceramic Coating for the new Safari. EDIT: Now other Tata models too

Tata Motors has launched an in-house Ceramic Coating service for Safari customers. It costs Rs. 28,500 (including GST) and will be available at all Tata Motors authorized dealerships.

The Ceramic Coating forms a hardened finish that mixes with the paintwork. Compared to conventional treatments, this coating lasts much longer and helps in shedding debris and grime while protecting the vehicle against traffic pollution, acid rain, solvents, animal matter and more.

The coating also reduces fading by UV rays. Its self-cleaning properties make it easy to maintain and prevents oxidation and corrosion.

Tata Motors plans to extend this service to other models in the future. Prices would vary depending on the segment.

The pricing seems to be quite reasonable when compared to the leading service providers. But the quality of workmanship and finish needs to be up to the mark, else not just the entire amount for the coating is in vain but the after effects might cost even more to fix.

Also, what's with the amateur photo comparison? The before and after photos should be of the same panel/part of the car in the same frame at the same distance and preferably, under the same lighting. The ones in the brochure/advert are more of getting a better/closer angle of a shot than the coating itself.

Don't go for it.

Drive to your neighborhood Detailer's and get it done there. They will also perform paint correction for you before ceramic coating it.

I don't trust Tata ASC or their dealers to ceramic coat the paint properly. improperly coated cars can leave high spots and be a disaster!!

The assumption that the car is scratch free at the dealership and that it's the best time to apply ceramic is wrong.

Many people I know have gotten their cars with tons of swirls and scratches straight from the assembly line.
Get the paint polished, then apply ceramic at a proper paint Detailer's place!

The Safari is an expensive car, a little bit more for a good detailer is worth every penny for that beautiful finish

Look at the photos of the wheels - brand changed, caliper position changed, factory qc mark position changed. At least click the same car/part before and after treatment

Take a Look at the engine cover! Orange turned into the red after ceramic coating.

This is one of those things which should NOT be done from the company, much like Wheel Alignment & Balancing. It should always be done from a specialist, even if it cost 2 times more.

for any ceramic coating to last, there is a painful exercise of paint preparation. I have seen Tata Dealers apply coatings (some chinese text written on the bottle) with white waste. Now how long that will last is anyone's guess.

I personally would not go in for this, even if it is FREE.

Excellent move and the cost is nominal as well. Wish more manufacturers start with this, of course if done properly. I'm sure dealers will engage a professional third party vendor for this.

re: Tata offers Ceramic Coating for the new Safari. EDIT: Now other Tata models too

Leaving it upto dealers is definitely not going to be the best option for the customer. Somebody who really cares about the ceramic coating would already know enough to not get it done through the dealer. Secondly, the quality of the job is quite questionable as well considering half the dealers in India cannot even do a proper repaint very well. I don't see this option working much. Also this can prompt the dealers to force people into getting this as a "mandatory" accessory and just another chance at ripping off naive and uninformed public.

This has never worked previously for Tata although I do appreciate the fact that you still have an option. Remember how Tata sold the Webasto sunroof as a dealer accessory on the Nexon and Harrier V1.0? How many people got that?

As for the results, history has it that dealers(of any brand really) are not really able to carry out specialist services like these. I am not saying that the dealer will never will be able to give good results but its common sense it isn't the dealer's primary business. It is better left to people who exclusively deal with these things. It is not an easy or unskilled job that any random guy on the street can do unlike just washing a car.

The craftsmanship of dealers will nowhere be close to what dedicated detailing studios have to offer. Especially considering from BHPians' point of view who notice even the most minor imperfections on their cars' paint finishes and maintain their rides impeccably.

re: Tata offers Ceramic Coating for the new Safari. EDIT: Now other Tata models too

I cannot understand one thing. If this ceramic coating is so great that it protects against UV etc. Etc. And prevents paint fade, why isn't it made standard from the factory? Why not just include it at the paint shop?
That would make the process standardized and prevent variations. It would also bring the cost down since it will be done in large volumes. And since this is claimed to be so hard and all, why not just start spraying it directly over the paint hence removing the need for a clear coat.

Care to shed some light on it somebody?

Those promo images itself begs us to stay away from this service. Images don't look to be from the same vehicle and also they have relied on lighting and post processing to convey the message!

re: Tata offers Ceramic Coating for the new Safari. EDIT: Now other Tata models too

I've seen first hand on how they apply the coating, and TBH, it is just an eye wash. Most of the standard protocols weren't followed before application. I gave the feedback to the owner of the Tata dealership who is a childhood friend, and he says he has no option but to live with it. The more he tries to implement good workmanship, the more problems he faces with the 3rd party applicator. Because it affects productivity, volumes cannot be handled, not enough skilled manpower etc.

The sole reason being volumes. Tata sells a decent number of cars a month. Even if 10% of sales get converted, the applicator can only do so much. Thereby affecting quality work.

I'd pass this offer, like someone mentioned, even if it was offered free of cost.

There are a few plans by CC manufacturers to introduce such products directly to the factory. But that will take time since it has to undergo rigorous testing and approval won't be so easy.

It is a dicey situation since it will directly affect retail outlets.

I think its the lighting and the way it is interacting with the colour.
Kinda begs the question why light up that area differently for the two photos? Ceramic coating doesn't come with a permanent white light for highlighting.
