Instead of buying a new car I would like to get padmini body+chassis and put a new engine(available in indian market) in it. this car is for daily use on urban roads.

so what engine will fit into its bay?

have 2 engines on my list
1. honda city
2. santro xing

is there a better engine that will be a direct fit?

Your Padmini is rear-wheel drive, while the City & Santro are front-wheel drive. You would need to modify a lot of metal to effect the change, something on the lines of 'Bangla Bangers' on the Travel & Living channel ! You're better off getting a new car...

Conti engine would be the best fit or you can try gypsy king

you can try a esteem or a baleno engine mated with a gypsy gear box would be your best fit or you could import a v6 rwd engine with gear box .

why do you want to do this? i am not sure that will be reliable. you can very well go ahead and buy a used santro / city without much hassles. if you have already decided on this -

1. try out the 1.8ISZ engine, Conti differential & GB
2. Padmini Engine, S1 manifold, S1 Tailpipe & Glasspack, S1/118NE GB, S1/118NE differential.

IMO - it will be better off to properly tune a Premier Padmini and running it. less hassels and reliable.

esteem would be better than conti as contis would be heavy. Gonna be a bit expensive job and I doubt if any would do it right at Tvm.

Modding the original engine would be a better choice. Santro/City engines would be costly and feasibility can be a problem. Conti engine should be easy to source ( even the Amby 1800Isz engine is the same ) and cheaper for mods.

Esteem engine can just propel the wafer-light esteem.
The padmini will do good with the conti engine and the 1.8s inherent torque.

anyways - meshing the engine and GB for a FWD and RWD - from what i hear is a night mare - do try and get your hands on a nice old conti engine - and do the works on it - like port, polish etc etc- and then throw that into the fiat. then u will have yourself one MEAN machine!

Consider only stock RWD engines:

1. Conti 1.8

2. 118 nissan engine

3. A Padmini engine! Trust me, you can mod it to a level where is is enjoyably fast. Remember the S1?

If you really want to swap, I suggest you go for a 118NE engine and gearbox. The Conti ISZ engine is to powerful for it. The chassis, suspension, brakes and cooling system will need extensive work. If you're prepared to spend on that, you'll have a monster.

the padmini is 895 kg where as the esteem new one is 870 kg for the lx model and 5 kgs extra for the lxi and vxi.

no engine is a direct fit for the fiat except its own. and maybe the 118 is the simplest next choice but it wont be very fast. In fact the 1100 engine is more tuneable and faster than the 118.

an 1100 engine with higher compression, twin solex carbs, full exhaust, Piper F3G cam mated to a 118 gearbox can be a pretty fast car even by modern small car standards (Im talking zen, santro and carb esteem here).
