Confused whether to tune old F30 320d

Hi All,

I own a F30 320d which is a 2013 model. It has done around 68K at the moment. I want to try stage 1 tuning but not sure if I should. What is the suggestion. If yes any suggestions on the best place? I can do either Cochin or Coimbatore. Please suggest.

Stage-1 tune is a great idea given your car's age and condition. Kochi has some fantastic tuners. I'd suggest you get it done there. Ensure that any niggles with the powertrain are checked out and rectified before you do it though. A tune up on a bad engine can go sideways very quickly. Alternately, you can also try garages in Bangalore. That could make for a fun drive back home after!

After having driven a stage1 turbo diesel car for close to 55k kilometers, I'd say yes, go for it. I'll definitely check tuning possibilities for any turbo car that I buy, and get it remapped for sure if found feasible. It is the 'fun level' unlock.

The F30 320d is an extremely reliable car. Not a lot goes wrong with the drivetrain, and since your car has logged fewer miles, it’s certainly worth exploring a tune.

Give the engine a complete once-over before going ahead with the tune, though.

Check if Wolf Moto operates in your area. They’re one of the best tuners in the country and worth considering.

Re: Confused whether to tune old F30 320d

A stage 1 tune should not be a problem regardless of the car's age so long as it's been maintained well.

Will highly recommend to checkout tuners like Dinan (USA), G Power (Germany) and Mosselman (Netherlands) for your car as they specialise with BMW cars for decades. They have multiple dealers in India.

Do consider preponing your maintenance schedules, and get a thorough check of the engine and transmission health prior. Also, recheck the diesel quality. Diesel with Cetane 55 (XtraGreen) would be better compared to the regular Cetane 51 that are dispensed from the pumps.

Regardless of the tune you choose, get the fuel quality checked first, and the tune customised accordingly, and you should be good!

Re: Confused whether to tune old F30 320d

I've been running Superchips stage 1 tune on my F30 for almost a year now. I haven't faced any issues so far. During the initial days the bump in power was very noticeable but now I'm used to it. I'm planning to do a DPF delete soon.

I wouldn't suggest getting the superchips tune as it's a generic map for all N47 engines. I would suggest going with a tuner who does a dyno based custom tune.

I would also suggest you to get your Intake manifold cleaned and also do any pending regular service items before getting the tune. This ensures you get the best possible tune for the engine without any bottlenecks.

I'm assuming you haven't replaced your transmission fluid either so far. As the tune will bump up the torque figures, it's better to have fresh fluid in your transmission as well.

When i replaced the transmission fluid in my car, only 3 Litres was remaining. It's supposed to be 7 litres. So it's best to stay on the safe side.

Re: Confused whether to tune old F30 320d

No doubt, get it tuned to unlock the hidden potentials in turbo cars. Cars like BMW, VAGs are very tuner friendly.

I had tuned my Octavia TDI from Pete’s Cochin at 5 years and 55k kms, and used it for another 45k kms and 4 years before selling. Absolutely no issues, only thing is I started servicing it in every 8k kms.

And yes, Cochin is the best bet for you.
