Restoring a 1991 Fiat

Hi. I have a 1991 fiat which is in excellent engine condition but has some rust. I am planning its complete overhaul starting the 11th of October. Here are the things i'm planning with the budget alloted

- Paint Touch Up : Rs.5000/- (Since the car already has a 2yr old coat 'of po' paint)

-Castrol GTX or Magnatec (Need Advice Here): Rs. 650 or Rs.1000

-New Suspention Bushes

- A antirust coating from turtle wax outlet (offering wriiten 15 yrs warranty) : Rs. 3850/-

Any other things which need to be added? My total budget is Rs.15000

Its actually the Castrol Magnatec GTX. Around 750 for 3 lts which I think is more than enough for the Padmini.

Btw, I don't think this thread needs to be in the Vintage section. No offence, but a '91 padmini kinda contaminates this section. Lets leave this for the proper vintage and classics. Hope U understand.

Wow, that sounds kinda steep! You can instead try Wurth, you get a 1L can @ Rs. 950 odd....2 cans should be enough for 1 car, even so it'd come less than the price of TW you've quoted here....just a suggestion!

You mention rust, what are the main areas of rust on your car. How is the floorboard? How are the front housing for the leaf springs. Post some pictures.

You dont need Castrol GTX magnatec. Castrol GTX itself of the correct grade will suffice and it is of the API-SL grade as well and hence conforms to modern standards as well.

The PAL manual will have an extensive list of the different grades of oil's applicable.

Are you doing the conversion to electric fan? Note that it requires more than just the motor.

Thanx for the quick reply. The main parts of rust on my car are

1. The doors (at the bottom) The rust persists even after repeatedly cleaning all the drain holes.
2. Behind the front and rear bumper
3.Edges of the boot lid.

Hi. I've sent my car for a full repaint in the same shade but 2k paint. After it comes back i myself with a mechanic who has his expertise in FIATS is going to tune the engine suspension etc and flush the oils replacing it with gtx magnatec.

Is your car sea facing? Is it in a sheltered parking? If the 1st answer is yes, and the second is no, there isnt much you can do. The car is supplied with woefully inadequate antirust, and Bombay weather is merciless.

When the car is washed take extra care that water doesnt collect in all the channels, which just hastens the process.

Hi,

As per your request I am giving below my comments.

1> Paint - You will need a higher budget if you want to do a professional 2k booth job as there is a lot of corrosion. Would advise a full scrap to bare metal and go forward. Consult V-16 or Karlos.

2> Both are good enough go for whatever suits your budget.

3> A definite change if existing are worn out.

4> Avoid.

Cannot comment or advise without seeing the car condition.

Thanks for your responses.
1. From the year 1991 to 2003 the car was in Dadar but not exactly near chaupati.
2. In the year 2004 , I had the car fully repainted and replaced the parts which had corroded.
3. Since 2003, the car is in my place at Teen Hath Naka, Thane (West) in a fully enclosed stilt parking as you can see the pic in my 'avtar'.

So the main reason for rust may be the water that seeps through the window channels (When they are rolled down) and perhaps the drain holes provided by PAL are not efficient enough.

I have sent the car again for a full paintjob with 2K paint (Ofcourse I had to extend my budget for it, but its worth it) at Vasant Autogarage (Where I had earlier got the paint job done with excellent results.) which is next to the H.P Petrol Pump besides wockhardt hospital, Mulund West.

After I get the delivery of my car on Saturday (17th October) I would then proceed at changing the oils, and other work. I had to do this since the garage for the paint job and the mechanical work which I use are two different place due to their expertise in thier respective fields.

Anyway would be coming with my car on the 4th Nov FCCCI rally surely.
