Hi There

uh - this sounds like a bad idea! (i.e. in case of an accident you don't want another thing flying around to bash your head in!)

p.s. I dig your signature!

i think he is talking about using a laptop in the super-slow-motion city commute.. even then front passenger seat is not a good place because when the stand is popped up, i am sure it opens up a lot of 'metal stuff' between your knees and the dash.

tray on the back of a seat like the ones in the flights.. or trays that swivel out of the side again like in the flights.. will be practical i guess.

I second the opinion here that front-seat passengers are better-off without a laptop. Designing something for the back seat is a much better idea IMO.

Which car?

Your best bet would be jerry-rig one of those ready-made wall-mount TV stands which swivel out. To help you visualize, these have 3 arm sections (one with the wall-mount plate and one with a rectangular frame platform) and 2 pivots

You will need to figure out how and where to mount it under the dash, so that the platform comes out horizontal. A bit of tinkering and welding should take care of that.

Not to be used as a child seat!

If you must use the laptop while someone else is driving the car, there are plenty of laptop stands available. But for the "back" of the front seat.

Therefore, you would be sitting on the back seat when using the laptop.

Good idea but not safe. Dont think they are any stands available. How exactely do you intent to use the lappe in your car, I mean for what purpose?

My idea would be cut the inside bottom of the glovebox so that you can slide in/out when needed and fabricate a colapsable simple base which can fit into the glovebox. ever thought of getting a 7inch touchscreen to use with the laptop!!. You can mount the screen in the middle of the dashbord and wire it with your hidden lappe. waaala there you.

you get laptop stands in car accessory shops ..you can fit them behind the seat which are foldable and safer than making one for the passenger seat.

Hi
There is a guy in Bangalore who makes Laptop trays (a la inflight dinner trays in the planes), but the designs are meant for backseats.

even these were found to be quite hazardous in case of sudden braking....your kidneys & other vitals are at stake.

isnt it better to use the Laptop as a LAP-top ?

I do, but I worry.

My Powerbook gets pretty hot and since I wear shorts, I get solid chatkas.
Also I have heard that when the Laptop is placed over your genitals, the heat and radiation lowers your sperm count.
I have issues with that.

Why not just install a laptop dock in the boot, permanently wired to a display in your dash.
