Yippee! Got myself a used Apexi S-ITC (Super Ignition Timing Controller), via e-bay! Advanced timing just 3-6 degrees across the rev range. The effect is HUGE! The midrange torque has become MASSIVE!

The Apexi S-ITC is a previous generation controller.

Yup! A dyno will be on the cards soon! Stage 2 complete! Still experimenting with the timing!

I see that you have done Somender Head Grooves / Grooving in your pictures posted.

Did you shave the head after doing it? Has it made a difference in the performance /mileage?

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

Sorry for the late reply....yes, i did shave the head a bit (on the Sonata). It has increased the compression ratio very slightly. So there is a bit more power & torque. I do feel the engine is smoother & revs rise more quickly. I can stay in longer in a higher gear now.

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

Pranav....i went all the way from Pune to Mysore JUST to get the whole thing done from Mr. Somender Singh himself. He also did the radiusing of the valves, porting of the intake & exhaust etc. The signature.."sing" in the pic is of the man himself!

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

1self, i've always been intrigued by this grooving technique and i've been wondering if the results gained are because of the grooving or because of increasing the compression ratio which is always done alongwith grooving. Your thread made me take a look into Somender Singh's website yet again and there i have found this interesting test result.

SOMENDER-SINGH.com - ARAI Dyno Test

In the test result we can see that after completing the grooving the engine gained a bit of torque but lost on peak power (the IAT is nearly the same for test 1 and 3). Another interesting fact is that the head used for test 3 seems to be different.

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

Sankar, one actually LOSES a BIT of compression after grooving, as there is more space in the compression area due to the grooves. The shaving of the head gets it back to original compression.

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

Yep thats right. But i feel on low compression engines a bump in compression, not as high as to induce knock, would yield a similar result. My exp is limited to motorcycles though.

Re: Elantra Petrol Stage 2 Complete!!!

Sankar, the whole point of doing the exercise was to give knock resistance when i go FI on the Sonata. People who have tried this on high boost drag cars in the US were amazed with the knock tolerence of gooved engines all else being the same! The engine has some extra power after grooving. Seat of the pants feeling. My car already has 10:1 compression.

I hope you won't be using the ignition controller when you go FI. What engine management are you planning on using?
