While window shopping in Khan Market (imported car-parts/accessories market) on Saturday I found a roof light mount with 4 lights with clear glass having standard H3 55W halogens. I've a similar one mounted on the front of my Scorpio with blue glasses but had replaced the stock bulbs with Narva.

I've a half-a-mind to mount this on the rear of the Scorpio and switch it on the morons as described below. Is it legal? I've heard that in Chandigarh roof mounted lights are banned; only the police & escort vehicles are allowed to use.

Well, I do know that you get in trouble for using those in Kerala.

Some cops are arrogant enough to smash these lights the moment they see 'em. (Friend had the misfortune. Said Officer got reprimanded for it, but my friend's lights were gone for good and there was no compensation)

Somebody behind you at high beams? Switch on your fogs. They are very very annoying. And use the IRVM in night mode.

bhpians,

I've been reading through this thread.
Most of you guys are correct we drive on a road filled with not so bright people. They can be annoying, idiotic and down right stupid at times.

Having said that, its not easy to be the guy to keep a cool head.
Yes hi-beam "morons" are a big headache.
Just keep this in mind some of these people does't even know why/how/where to use hi/low beam.

Being hostile can make you feel good.
This is not always the "right" thing.

I'm now in chennai and the roads I drive on here people just use hi beam, that's it. In 10 cars you will be really luck to find 2 guys using low beam.

This is what I do.

1. Adjust your left headlight to be a bit "off" the road (helps you when you get blinded and have to see the edge of the road)
2. If the hi-beam guy keeps on coming, instead of flashing the light and trying to blind him, switch off you lights (let him see clearly, 'cus you have no idea where you are as you cannot see) and pull to the left side of the road.

Yes you can try and do a hi/low combo before this.
But most drives just don't "get" it.

The lasers and the rear fog lights and the other "combo" effects seen in the thread are a bit childish and can lead up to a nasty accident.

If the guy coming down the road is a moron you cannot make him a wise man, try to drive/ride safe and be responsible.

Let him pass 5 sec of sanity that's all it takes.
Be a gentleman on the road let the morons pass.

Just think 2 weeks tinkering up you precious baby or 5 sec slower ?
I'll let him pass.
I love my car.

This is precisely why these things keep happening in this country in this day and age.

There are different points of view on how to deal with such situations, but IMHO allowing such things to go on unchallenged is childish and cowardly - not the act of attempting to do something about it in however exaggerated a manner.

Your solution would be plausible in a law-abiding, disciplined country that is effectively policed so the number of such offenders is rare.

Out here though, one would have to either stop driving at night entirely (the effectiveness of which is questionable, as there are other acts of intimidation during the day) or stop every 20-30 meters or so to give way and convince yourself that you are a gentleman.

The term "gentleman" does not necessarily mean GENTLE man or one of mild mannerisms alone - one that cannot defend his territory can never hope to be called a gentleman.

My question again - Safari & Scorpio don't have fogs at the rear, so what to do and the OVRMs don't have a night mode.

Well the Safari does, maybe old ones did not.
As for ORVM, I have found that internal mirror is the biggest source of pain. High beams in ORVM are annoying but not that much so.
Anyways if it annoys you, buy a small piece of "Stick with water" sun film thingy, and put it in your line of sight.
It does not hamper your vision much, and will protect against glare.
Or you could tint the ORVM reddish. Since most of HID high beamers have blue tinge light, it will attenuate much of the light

Safari has fogs in the rear and RVMs with night mode - not ORVMS which I doubt any manufacturer offers in India with a night mode and therefore the problem persists. The fogs however are covered with red plastic and are mounted very low on the bumper.

That said, it may not take much to re-route the wiring to a more appropriate location behind the vehicle - the switch on the dashboard will remain the same.

IIRC, as per law, one cannot have any light at, or above the height of your headlamps. The rear facing ones should be below the height of the tail lamp.

I carry a simple LED torch from Welcome To ANDSLITE in the car all the time (for emergencies). I have used it on occasion to flash at the offending oncoming vehicle - car/suv/truck/bus - it has worked without fail!

Thanks - just checked out their website and their motto is "Service to Humanity is Service to God". May God bless them

Out of interest - is it permissible by law for some trucks to feature 4 or 6 headlamps in front? The Swaraj Mazdas are built with this feature at the factory, but a lot of Ashok Leyland truck bodies built in Namakkal feature 2 or 3 headlamp units per side, making them downright dangerous.

i too used to think let the high beamers pass by. but then i remembered this is not gandhijis age and then decided to upgrade my lights. with no second thoughts i got a 100/90 philips headlamps fitted on my alto.

now daily i face encounters with lots of confidence. whenever i see a person coming from front with a high beam, first i request him by switching my headlights off and then again on with low beam, if then also he doesnt budge there i go with high beam right in the same lane of his in his opposite direction.

in many instances i have stopped right bumper to bumper with the upcoming car, got down of my car and tell him coolly " Sir, please have manners to lower your beams when the front car requests so, coz u wont be lucky every time that person like me will stop in front of you, next time i pray someone bangs into you if u do the same" smile and go away.

dare he puts the high beam again in city driving. so educate people for using low beams , not just allow them to pass away
