Ikon Vs Esteem

Hi guys

I own a 2000 model Carb Esteem VX now for last 3-4 yrs with excellent engine and gear box condition having run just over 70k. Now its time to do some repair work like painting and stuff on it, also tyre change. But one friend of mine was suggesting that instead of spending money on an old vehicle I should just dump this car and go for a second hand Ikon 1.3 (2000-2002 model) which I may get for around about 1.75lacs. Present car i presume ll fetch atleast 1.5 lacs.

Please suggest. Also keeping in mind the maintenance cost of Ford!!

Thanks,
Sam

A 1.3 Ikon is a boring car to drive. The Esteem is a lot better than the 1.3 Ikon when it come to driving pleasure. If you have to go for an Ikon, go for the 1.6

2000-02 model i think comes with the older endura engine. Its old, sluggish, noisy and FE is not too good either. I'd say, the esteem is better to drive. If u want a fun to drive ikon, go for the 1.6(but not so great FE) or even the 1.3 rocam is okay.

Spot on!

Sam - Avoid the older 1.3s. Your carb'ed Esteem is a much better driver's car.

as pointed 1.3 ikon with endura engine id nota good option, however if its 1.3 flair I bet its much refined and better and great handling car compared to Esteem.

Dude, may not agree with above. I own a flair 1.3 of Oct-2004 and I had not problems with the car till now. Many people here will vouch for this. This is the drivers car. I have driven this car at 663 kms at a stretch and did not have any kind of pains in the upper part or lower parts of the body. The rocam engine is much refined as its old counterpart. Ia'm happy with the kind of response it is giving.

But the spare parts might not be as cheap as MUL.

@sam_sant: If you want to go for a new/old car make a survey (of the market) which car is better and then decide.

I think the car he owns is a older version and not the flair version with ROCAM engine.

The ford Ikon has excellent handling.
The Endura is very sluggish on first 2 gears, almost like an Indigo. The rocam engines are lot better. The old carb esteem is quicker than the 1.3 Ikons but is not more comfy to drive or anything, besides age old horrible interiors.
Highway driving is decent on both cars.
Esteem can brake decently well for the power, Ikon brakes are HORRIBLE after 100 KMPH !!

The 1.6 Ikon is faster than both the above....

AND, the MPFI esteem is quicker than all the above.

I own a 1.3 Flair, I will vouch for the car but still don't see the logic of disposing the esteem and getting a second hand ikon. As you said the esteem is in excellent condition so trading it for an Ikon ( Which you cant be sure that will be in good condition plus is definitely an expensive car to maintain) does not make sense to me.

yep yep the mpfi's are quick
have got mine up to 165 kph ODO readin in 3rd gear @ 6800-7K rpm.
and hit 182-185 4th gear at 5500 + Rpm on my way to belgaum recently with 3 people and luggage !!
So yeah she is quick.
Even though she could do with better brake pads.
Speedworks are supposed to EBC pads i think for the esteem.
Am gonna order them soon myself. Having used them i cant handle indian pads anymore.

i dont like the esteem personally one bit , -but its a personal choice i presume.
Never felt comfy driving that car let alone pushing that car even with KoNi s
And in todays times i would NEVER buy an esteem.
Just to tell you my thoughts.
happy motoring
