Does anyone know what the RTO formalities are to swap an engine in a car in Kerala. Before you only had go to the RTO and have the engine number updated in the Registration Booklet. Now, i hear that you have to get prior approval?
I believe people will be able to answer this question better if you tell the car in question & also the engine.
From what I hear,it is not possible to endorse engine change in RC.
You shouldnt worry much about changing your jeep engine.
Does it have comprehensive insurance?
I plan to upgrade the diesel engine on my jeep from the 2112cc XDP4.9 engine to the 2498cc XD3 engine. No comprehensive insurance, only third party. My concern about not endorsing the engine will be if I need to get an NOC to register it in another state they verify the engine number before giving the NOC.

Get the NOC/re-register it before the engine change :).
Of late, I heard that the RTOs do not allow engine changes as long as the old engine is in working condition. This was told to me when I tried to change my .8 ltr engine of my Alto to 1.1!
There's some procedure involved to prove that the old engine is no longer usable.
I'm not sure if this is correct information. I just went forward with my swap job then. ;)
OT: u got a 1.1 under the hood ZAK ??
From what I know unless the car is out of production engine swap is not authorised by RTO
do you have to tell them?

I completed the swap job and ran with that engine for some time. Then the car met with an accident after which the original engine was put back. The 1.1 block I got was removed from a crashed Wagon R and it had some cracks etc i wasn't fully satisfied with it.

The pencil tracing of the Chassis and frame number is required when you go for the NOC and re-registration. For this get the engine number entered in the RC punched to the new engine block before you do the installation. Unless both the engines look extremely different it shouldn't be a problem to clear both NOC and FC.
The XD3P and the XDP4.9 are very similar looking engines. All you need to do is file off the engine number on the new engine and get the old engine number stamped. Make sure that the font and size are the same as on the old engine. There are specialists for this. As you are replacing the engine with an XD3P, visually no one will know the difference.
That said, let me also tell you that it is illegal to change the engine with another engine which will mean a change in fuel or displacement or power! You may replace the engine with another of the same specifications, or more simply, the very same engine from the same manufacturer.
No RTO in India will endorse a change of engine which involves a change in specifications.
You insurance will be invalidated by this change, if not endorsed.
In Kerala, we've always plonked Isuzu/Matador engines on our older Ambys ? So did all the rulez have changed ?

yes the rules have changed,now you cannot change a petrol one into diesel even if the engine is totalled.engine changes are allowed in cases of accidents wherin the whole engine is damaged beyond repair,or similar casses where engine has to be changed for the operation of the car in a safe setup.
if you need to change the engine into a higher spec one its not possible in kerela.
then if you ask should we inform them for the swap-legally its not allowed and against law.so in the event of a mishap we wont be in a possition to justify ourself and the damage wont be small.

In punjab, still jeeps are 'made' in workshops.

What about all those vintage cars?
There is a provision( some court order) that permits engine change in Vintage cars as the engine is no longer in production.
can we utilize these provisions?:D
