what's the thing with headlight film?

i have seen a couple of cars with black or body painted film over the headlights. what r they and where do i get them. Are they just for looks or do they serve any purpose?

Please do a search before creating a new thread. A simple search for the words headlight and film together would have pointed you to the right thread.

Also, please avoid the use of SMS language as per the TBHP rules.
