Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

Folks, Can anyone recommend me a carb tuner in Bangalore for my '99 Zen. This is not for race purpose, but for city driving.

Im not happy with the way carb was tuned by last 3 service.

Issues I see are:
Average pickup & laggy at high RPMs
Poor Low End Torque
~12kmpl in City with No AC. Mostly driving on ORR.
Some pinging

Im comparing current performance with 4 services back. Current Odo reading is 96K Kms.
I last serviced about 1K kms back, as per service, clutch, timing, etc is perfect.
I think my carb needs some expert to tune it right.

Please help me find one.

Any MASS should be able to do this for you .Though I would recommend Suraksha in Bommanhalli for this

Satya, Actually, I did 3 services back-to-back in Suraksha Bommanahalli on your recommendation. They are really good. Thanks to your inputs.

Last one in Vishwas near Banaswadi ORR as they are near my house.

I think i will go back to them and emphasize on carb retune.

However i was thinking is there a carb specialist i can go to?

Hello Devang, when i had a carb zen i used to get that tuned from a guy called Anand he had no workshop but used to come home and do the work. In my experience he was pretty good in tuning for a carb engine. let me know if u want to try his work.

Ok guys i would be going for an upgrade from a zen to a sedan.
The whole conversation for a change in car started last week. I had gone to drop my MIL and BIL to the railway station and had a good number of baggage say about 5 to 6 bags now most of you know that in a zen one big size suitcase is also a tought ask in the boot. So finally had to place the bags in the front seat n a few in the boot. So the keeda in my head started if this is a frequent issue i face and if i have 5 ppl on board then where will the laguage go. So started the conversation with my wife for an upgrade after the send off .

Me: Dont you think this year we would be travelling out a lot in our car to visit temples and tourist places?
Wife: Yes, i think that was what we had planned for this year
Me: So dont you think we need to upgrade to a sedan seeing that we faced issues today with 4 ppl and laguage?
Wife: one stare and thinking.....
Me: Thinking that she may say yes already started selecting a few good sedans which i need to check out ( Vento or City or Fiesta Classic)
Wife: No we dont need an upgrade i am happy with the current car and these situations may come once in a month may be or once in 2 months so we dont have to invest on a new car and pay heavy EMI's
Me:

a breif silence for 10 min and radio station plays a nice track...Criminal (Ra-one) n wife increases the volume so i had a different come back statement for that and i pitch in for a different point now.

Me: Cant we buy a used sedan
Wife: No we are not changing our car ....

With me its like onces something gets in to my head i have to get it no matter what and my wife knows that well

So we get back home and i left the case to rest for that day and decided to talk the next day.

day 2 i dont talk abt the car to her but as a spy started my secret background work.I already start my search for used sedan's finalized 3 cars and all were Petrol cars.
1.OHC Vtec
2. Baleno
3. Ford Fiesta
In the same order
Reasons all are drivers car like a Zen

So started the hunt for cars
Vtec i m sure every guy would love to drive this car any day...
My experience after a 2 day long search was ther are not many above average or good cars available and didnt want to buy a 10 yrs+ old car for 3 - 4 lacs so gave up on the option. Saw a couple of cars which where in bad state still the owner was asking an exorbitant amount i would have paid that price if the car was in good condition with no repairs but nt with a car that requires immediate attention for repairs

Baleno: Started the hunt and heard 2 stories from a couple of my friend who had to wait for parts for few days as the parts are not readliy available... hmmm thinking again put this on hold and said if i find a good pre worshiped Baleno i ll check it out

Fieasta: Ah i love the elegant looks of this car.ford handling was a good one in the below 12 lac segment, ford service horrors, Ford FE stories, took a lot of time out reading posts and threads about the fiesta and decided let me have a look at the car personaly n then decide. Meanwhile a friend of mine recently brought a 07 Fiesta for a decent price took a test drive n man i was quite impressed things i liked seating position..rears looks(almost resembles a Merc) rear seat was good enough for me considering what i have in my zen and the suprise package the boot oh man its quite big or real big i must say. Only things i didnt like, miss the peppiness in pick up my zen has. Offcourse this is only my view considering i drive a zen and this car is leaps ahead in most aspects and its a different segment.

And to add to this saw 3 good cars and all were well maintained n decent prices.

So now all this work above took a good 4 days so it was almost 5 days where the car topic was discussed with my wife she was happy that i dont have that topic in my head not knowing wat was happening

will post more details later and Yes i have put my zen up for sale in the classifieds and yet to finalize which car i need to buy so " Picture abhi bi baki hai dost "

Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

I think the post above is in wrong section . But i believe you can retain your zen . bangalore traffic is pathetic and using a sedan here is inviting daily issues in driving/ parking.
I suggest use taxi when you need more space . You will save money while still have fun in zen .
I was in same situation and did what is suggested.

Of course if it is a buy for status/ego than my logic is flawed.

Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

Yes Thanks Mate didn't realize in the flow of typing. Mods could you please delete or move the earlier post to the appropriate thread . Thank you in advance

I agree that the driving a sedan in traffic may be a little hectic when compared to a hatchback. But the thing is i mostly use company transport and use the car occasionally on weekdays and mostly use it on weekends. So i think this shouldnt be a great problem. Yes your point is pretty valid. And this has nothing to do with ego/status.

Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

Zen lovers,

My 00' model carb zen ran about 84k km has had drop in mileage for quite sometime now. I have been trying to post this long time back, now only got some time.

Earlier it always used to give 15kmpl in city (with bangalore traffic! and 50% AC) and about 17-18 range in highways. This was observed till about 69k km, and drop in mileage was after say 70 km till date. The only change being new tyres of stock profile (bridgestone - 145/70 R 13) which should have ideally increased the mileage, done at exactly 69k km. Now its in the 11-12 kmpl range in city. Not taken to highways of late, so dont know exactly. I always measure this on a full - tank -to tank basis, so that margin of error is very less.

Not sure if air filter is due for a change, but used to do 5k km interval service quite regularly.

Is it beneficial to add K & N filter to improve the mileage. Or does it actually serve any purpose. Are there any ill efects of adding K & N filter additionally. What else could have gone wrong, or reasons for drop in mileage. I am a mild user of pedal and use it as mildly as possible.

Being novice here, is it that current Air filter is replaced and we put on K & N filter. Please let me know ways and means to improve mileage. I love this zen and want to give me more miles per petrol to keep it with me.

Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

Chethan,

This was exactly the set of issues I am also facing. Devang have described it well technically, thanks.

I also use a 00' model carb zen and I just still love the way it drives. Really a driver's car. Have done last service at 79k km as per Devang's recommendation at Suraksha, Bmnhlli and it's been good. Now it's due for 5k interval service at 84k km. Low Mileage, low end torque, absurd lagging pick up are the issues i am facing too.

Except for the oil change due in 84k km rest all are in perfect condition as of now. I presume an excellent carb tuner should do a world of good to all these issues in zen. Can you give contact details of Anand, carb tune guy.

Re: The Zen Modifications Thread

I am from Hyderabad and own a 2003 Zen and recently i came across this car on the net. Fell in love with it and have been thinking of a Hella Rallye series light for my zen.

Anyone done this already ? Let me know your thoughts on this. I am particularly worried about vibrations (car has a plastic bumper).

Can anyone suggest a good place in hyderabad ?

Sorry mate i had been a little busy with work hence couldnt get back and reply here. The tunner i used to get it done may not be the best in town now as i used to get my carb zen tunned from him in 2007. You can how ever try him and i have PM you his contact. Do post your review if you get a tunning work done from him .I usually used to get advanced tunning done from him. Get your tunning checked if the timing in is advanced or retarded tunning.

Cheers,
Chethan
